Australia were 89/4 at one stage of their innings. Just pointing this out.

Glenn Phillips brings up his 50...

...then next ball Blundell is out for 33.

Still 270 behind.

Looks like we'll be following on today.

Such a shame after Blundell and Phillips hard work

All gone for 179, not bad given the horror-show start to the innings. No follow on and Aussies lead by just over 200 runs

All out for 179.

Good innings of 42 by Matt Henry, who is developing into a very good test starter now that he's getting consistent opportunities.

Pretty much the only silver lining for NZ on a terrible day for us.

Aus not enforcing the follow-on and will bat again...

Australia conceded just 7 extras; we conceded 41.

We reconfirmed that Southee can’t bat patiently to save his fucking soul or the team.

But he got Smith in his first over, and that is worth something

Yep, his quality as a fine test opening bowler has never been in doubt.

He's a much better batsman than his stats suggest, but far too often he's looked like he's batting for himself without the disciplined approach the team needs.

A tail-ender with that kind of attitude should never bat higher than 11 imho, regardless of his obvious talent with the willow. The fact he's playing his 100th test but his highest test score of 77no came on debut is telling, I reckon.

Did NZ send their B team? Not much of a contest this.

As if SA could do any better. Australia gave you an absolute pasting last time out.....

Most of our Saffer poaches are either injured or retired, so yeah, not at our strongest right now. Thankfully we still have one left to keep us in the game.

Hard to argue with any of those comments. I would always have him at #11 with his current attitude to batting.

Mental disintegration.

BC's heads are gone because our bowlers completely missed their marks (41 extras!) - 116 last wicket partnership?!?! I know that Aussie bat deep - but come on. Oh for Boult to be in the side.

Conway missing at the top (regardless of his terrible form) is a huge blow. Latham and Young don't really inspire confidence - neither having really done anything of note recently.

Just a terrible day for us - all summed up nicely by Southee shelling a catch off the last ball of the day.

Australia 113/4 at Lunch, a lead of 317 runs, with 8 sessions left...

We may be in a spot of bother.

A second catch shelled by Southee in this innings, and both of them should've been caught.

Plus the wickets have dried up. He hasn't bagged more than 3 in an innings in almost a year...

Southee has dropped two relatively easy catches then takes a far harder one. Commentator says “Southee has a great pair of hands”.

Phillips with a Michelle, backed up by excellent catching.

146/8, 350 run lead

And this is Phillips’ first ever five-for in all cricket.

Hard enough facing a huge chase without these sitters being dropped.

I know we're gonna get hammered, but having Australia at 150/8 isn't the worst consolation.

Lyons added 40 or thereabouts after being dropped so we could have had them 120/9.

That was a great bowling performance. Would've been even better if the catches had been held...

Encouraging stuff, but for this test it's too little too late of course...

How does this Maori crash course in cricket serve any purpose at all?

Who is likely to want to start learning Te Reo with cricketing terms as Lesson 101?

Well meaning, misguided nonsense, at best.

There went our admittedly already incredibly slim chances of chasing down the target.

He had already started shifting his weight to his right for the outside edge but somehow got his left hand out and down. Fucking brilliant.

Lyon picks up 2 quick wickets and NZ are 126/5.

Aaand Lyon gets another one. That's his Michelle, to go with 4 wickets in the first innings... and he's in with a great chance of bagging 10 for the test.

129/6
