A landmark court ruling has held the home secretary, Priti Patel, accountable for failures in ensuring that deaths in immigration detention centres are properly investigated.
Two judges in the immigration court ruled on Wednesday that three of the home secretary’s detention policies breached human rights rules and that she could not frustrate or undermine inquiries into these deaths.

Frustrate or undermine by abusing her position by attempting to get the witnesses deported so they could not testify. Even amongst the Tories, she is a standout revolting specimen of human kind.

She operates like she actually works for MI6 with no oversight/accountability.

It's not like she faces any serious consequences though. Boris won't do anything about her and ministerial resignations are a thing of the past.

I think this guy has got some of this mixed up. Greensill was one of the banks used by the Govt for CLBILS (L = Large) whereby the bank lends the money and we.... err, I mean the Govt...
guarantees 80% of the loan. The limit was £50m (although there was a special approval (read "mates rates") mechanism for up to £200m upon approval.

Greensill gave £400m in CLBILS (8x the max rate) to the seriously questionable Gupta family's business, GFG Alliance...... which is also up sh*t street and so unlikely to be repaying much of the loan to the liquidators of Greensill: ergo the tax payer is about to lose another £320m.

They really are a bunch of selfish, greedy, unprincipled bastards who are following the Bannon/Trump playbook of committing all your crimes in plain sight and then deny, deny, deny and get the public bored of all the crimes and corruption. Their day of reckoning will come but not before they have all made their millions and fecked the country up good and proper. Bastards every one of them!

No. It’s getting worse. The old press baron model was bad enough but the ability to remove any checks and balances and pump stuff straight to the ‘base’, as shown by Trump is a bit depressing. As long as the ruling class can get people angry then point at a group and say, ‘the reason why things aren’t good for you is because it is all their fault’, it won’t change. Divide and rule has been taken to another level.

It's exactly that. The economy is f**ked for who knows how long on their watch (we can argue about COVID) and to they are going full bore troughing, figuring the well will run dry soon. Definitely a case of desensitising the public using the shoal effect i.e. commit so many crimes, chances are only a few will get caught.

Tragically, I think you are right. And COVID has provided both the distraction and the tool with which to line their own pockets.

And the "ruling class" bit is spot on. Hence my frustration at people fawning over the royals.

Civil Servants double hatting with private companies bidding for Government contracts is genuinely astonishing stuff, how anyone could possibly consider that it's OK is beyond me. Another example of our Rolls Royce Civil Service in action I guess

Not sure how you are blaming Civil servants for the corruption in the government, the Civil service act under insttruction from the elected officials, even if they disagree with it.

Cameron is a naughty boy with serious questions to answer, the SCS who took roles with Greensil are also dodgy as hell and should know better. 'Only following orders' makes no sense in the situation I'm referring to, appreciate it is more relevant to Hancock.

I was going to post something along these lines: Sir Humphrey tried to tell us, but it required Trump and his enablers in the Senate to make us see that, with the support of the establishment, there is very little that the President or PM cannot do, provided they had the brass neck.

Torq's list up the page makes reference to being booted out next election and departing with a fistful of money, but even that doesn't necessarily follow these days.

Yeah, that's been a long-running refrain. It's something that corrupt governments actively encourage, because if everyone's viewed as corrupt then genuine corruption goes unanswered. The Republicans have been very good at this for some time now. It's slightly newer for the Tories.

It wouldn't shock me if Boris properly throws Cameron under the bus here. Would make him look tough on corruption for very limited losses, Cameron is an ex PM without a massive constituency in the party or the country. His allies by and large are out of Parliament, and they have a personal rivalry. 'Look I'm sorting it out, I even authorised a probe into an ex PM from my own party' would play pretty well politically I'd imagine.

You might even say the same thing about Hancock !

He couldn't have looked more expendable, if he had a target painted on his back; & this would also provide a convenient escape goat for all the shit to come from the Inquiry into Covid handling, & all the public money pissed away on dodgy contracts.

I get the point, but Cameron has no ammunition on Boris that hasn't already been fired. The inside story of handling Covid, however...

Fair enough, but you absolve the ministers (or slap them on the wrist).

It's not an attack on you specifically, just symptomatic of the reluctance to hold Government to account.

@Foodie, I have family members who have taken out an online subscription with the Telegraph and I'm horrified at the way it has coloured their thinking, particularly on Covid measures and hostility towards Europe. Matt Hancock, too, seems actively disliked; and I'm guessing it's the result of a campaign against him in that news sheet. So yes: there does seem to be a target on his back.

Money well spent after £252m to Ayanda Capital:

1. £186m of public money given to Uniserve Ltd of Essex, the UK’s largest privately owned logistics and global trade management company, to supply PPE that reportedly never appeared.

2. £116m of public money given to P14 Medical Ltd of Liverpool, which had liabilities exceeding assets by £485,000 in December 2019 with just £145 in the bank, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

3. £108m of public money given to PestFix, with 16 employees and net assets of £19,000, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

4. £14.2m and a subsequent £93.2m of public money given to Clandeboye Agencies Ltd, a confectionery wholesaler in Co Antrim, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

5. £40m of public money given to Medicine Box Ltd of Sutton-in-Ashfield, despite having assets of just £6,000 in March, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

7. £28m of public money given to Monarch Acoustics Ltd of Nottingham, makers of shop and office furniture, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

8. £25m of public money given to Luxe Lifestyle Ltd, to supply garments for biological or chemical protection to the NHS. According to Companies House, the business was incorporated by fashion designer Karen Brost in November 2018. It appears to have no employees, no assets and no turnover.

10. £10m of public money given to Medco Solutions Ltd, incorporated on 26 March (three days after lockdown) with a share capital of just £2, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

11. £1.1m of public money given to Bristol shoemaker Toffeln Ltd, had seemingly never supplied any PPE whatsoever in the past, for PPE that reportedly never appeared.

12.£825,000 of public money given to MGP Advisory, described as a venture and development capital business that was in danger of being struck off the companies register for failing to file accounts. – it’s not clear what they were supposed to provide.
