Forget game plan and coaching. In the past we had shit years because we had poor depth in key areas.

Take flyhalf for instance. We've fielded Koen, van Straaten, Gaffie du Toit, Jannie De Beer, Butch James, Jaco van Der Westhuizen, Brent Russell, Elton Jantjes and others I've probably forgotten about. These are all Super rugby level players who may have had the odd blinder in green and gold but were never going to pose a consistent threat against the best.

Similarly at wing with Nokwe, Chavanga, Rhule, Sergeal etc. And we can't blame quotas, I can't think of any world class white wings who would have done better. Fullbacks Conrad Jantjes, Sideshow Bob.

We have had unrealistic expectations about the Boks for years.

Our talent pool seems a lot wider than it has been for a long time. Except at flyhalf. Not sure Willemse or Bosch have what it takes.

If you want to mention intimidating players, go no further than Lomu. AE aint no Lomu.

Lomu was intimidating in his day, but I'm not sure he be as terrifying now as he was then. Look at some of the Polynesian wingers playing today, like Nadolo.

He might not be as intimidating now as he was in the 90s, but he was so different to everyone else playing at that time that the modern Jonah would be that much taller, that much heavier and that much quicker, you'd be talking about a bigger Etzebeth with a sub 10 sec100m time.

Very true this. Same at center. After Jacque Fourie left for Japan and Jean de Villiers’ game started to decline we were left high and dry in the midfield also. Went through a ton of combinations of players that showed immense talent, but never performed consistently.

The 2011 team had a solid core, but no depth and was saddled with a lot of politics, interference and egos. Not a recipe for success.

2015 was even worse...on all fronts.
