It's good to see some responsible Republicans want to reclaim their Party from the scum currently calling the shots. I wish them every success !
This is a very dangerous line of thinking in my opinion.

It enables Republicans to avoid responsibility for Trump and suggests that Trumpism is a departure from Republican ideals rather than a continuation of them.

They are and have been the party of illegal war, climate change denial, dog whistle racism, fiscal irresponsibility, mass incarceration, obstructionism and the NRA.
I don't see that it does ?

A significant number of Republicans have been ostracized, initially by the Tea Party loons, & now by the Trumpist fluffers. Even gimps like Frum; who I've little time for his policies;, was more or less kicked out of GOP.

A functional GOP is necessary as a balance against a DNC, that is just as capable of lurching to it's own extremes.

In a functional democracy, when one Party lurches to an ideological extreme; it's middle & the swing voters can at least shift their vote; but if the GOP has the Shitgibbon, & the DNC has AOC; then there are a lot of voters who don't seen any option they can vote for.

If instead of 100% AOC, they get a 90% Joe, & 10% AOC, at least the progressive wing gets an input; they mightn't get a US NHS, but the can get an enhanced Obamacare; & the swing voters aren't shitting themselves over the taxes to pay for it all*.

* and yes, I know the, "tax & spend", dems is a myth
Isn't the whole "How are we going to afford to pay for healthcare?" a bogus Republican talking point given that Americans pay more per capita for healthcare than any country on earth?

I read of a study a while back that said that a single payer healthcare system could be set up that would be both cheaper than the status quo and have better health outcomes.

As for the "functional GOP", I'm just not sure a thing has existed in my lifetime. They seem to have always rolled back protection for workers and the environment, opposed unions, slashed taxes for the wealthy, blocked common sense gun reform, engaged in voter suppression and gerrymandering and favoured high military spending.

I mean, I consider myself relatively conservative and I don't see them as being a bona fide conservative party. A party that advocates traditional christian, family values would do more for working families.

Conservatism is all about destruction and selling everything the country owns and has invested in for generations, to their mates, out of the backseat of the car, whilst escaping to the airport. There is no long term vision for the cou try. It is all just rationalised greed and self serving contempt for the poor, sick and unemployed.
And here is the thing about self serving contempt, as the contempt they have for people is self serving, as it serves them to have it, then it can never be satisfied, no matter how cruelly they treat people.

We seriously need to consider (after their policies re Austerity, needlessly killed over 135 thousand people and terrorised millions), whether we should tax every Tory in the land until they have to flee the country, otherwise this century is just going to be complete chaos.

Well, it's up to the 75,000 figure and growing rapidly. Trump just lies even harder and blames someone else.

It is ok, those figures will soon go down with a rapid rate now that the White House have direct control over reported figures instead of the CDC, they will do such a fantastic in reducing the numbers, no president in history would ever get rid of a virus so quickly and we will hear about it everyday in news briefings

The CDC just wanted to make the White House look bad, thats all

Why are they in camouflage? I know portland has a fair number of parks, but seriously.

Just another example of the militarization of the civilian police force in the USA

Why the customs and border patrol?

Slippery slope when the Federal government starts directly deploying forces to whisk away protestors.

As per the ACLU:
"Usually when we see people in unmarked cars forcibly grab someone off the street, we call it kidnapping,"

Looks suspicious, yeah. But I don’t see where camouflage is of benefit in that situation.

Aye right. Why camo? Easy to find a way to distinguish yourself from other civilian force by coloured helmets etc, rather than trying to dress up like you're the military.

The nation is beset by the worst crisis in at least 75 years. The pandemic rages because we failed to control its initial spread. The economy is grinding to a halt. Unemployment is stuck at depression levels. Mass protests demanding policing reform have transfixed the nation. An economic war with China is deepening into a Cold War.

The president isn't doing anything about any of it, and more disturbingly: Americans don't even expect him to do anything about any of it.

Is he chairing daily meetings of a pandemic task force? Is he meeting with school superintendents to find out what resources they need to open safely? Is he negotiating into the wee hours with Nancy Pelosi over the shape of the next emergency relief bill? Is he calling BLM leaders to discuss law enforcement reform? Of course he's not.

All reports indicate that he's singularly focused on his reelection. Yet the purpose of his reelection is for him to serve the nation as president, which is the very thing he is not doing.

He spends his time watching TV, hurling random attacks at Joe Biden, and shaking up his presidential campaign. We have come to see that as perfectly normal. But it's not normal!
75,000 Americans infected in a single day yesterday. Think about it!!!

7 5 , 0 0 0 !!! That is an insane number. Bet tRump will beat it.

It's not just the number; it's the trend, & the knowledge that a percentage of those 75,000 will need hospital treatment, & a percentage of those will die !

1.3% of 75000 is a death toll of 1000 a day. Same as UK or Italy at their peaks. It’s a lot but it’s not abnormal for Covid.

The crazier it gets over here the more likely he will win again if he just stops making such a mess of it. Still 3months+ to go, no point fixing covid now, he is better off waiting until early september to issue a mask rule and get fully behind the science - should have the whole thing cleared up by novemeber just in time to win re-election campaigning as the pres who saved america

There is no way covid-19 will be cleared up in 2~3 months unless a vaccine is discovered and widely available.

This is the trump thread, 2-3 months is more than enough time for a change to be politically enough to gain re-election.
Not sure if Trump is going to take the opportunity, though it is hard to see any other way for him to win and my main point is that it is also hard to see him losing if he starts doing the right thing on covid.

I actually believe some voters are stupid enough to be fooled by a last-minute election ploy turnabout on Covid 19 but still hope that sufficient numbers will not be fooled again by this conman.

I think the government can do very little other than set guidelines. It is up to the individual states to set up restrictions.

we can be pretty sure some voters are stupid enough, I hope so too, but it isn't that difficult for him to actually make it look like he is fixing things -looks like fixing the numbers is plan a at the moment, that shows they care about how it looks at least.
Tricky for Dems to avoid getting caught in trap that sounds like they want more deaths when they challenge the numbers, and then it gets more convoluted if the administration then stops making things worse and it truly gets better (slightly improves) just when Dems make corona the entire campaign
Again I am just focussing on the election campaign and the loss of life etc is for the other thread

So Oregon has requested that federal troops be removed from Portland ( these are the nonuniform, unnamed, unmarked kidnappers). The request was refused, so now they're suing to get them removed.

What should be done in Portland though? They've not been able to stop something like 50 consecutive nights of vandalism and violence, plus they are reducing police funding by something like $15m dollars. The mayor was protesting that he had everything under control, which is rather disturbing.
