On the general topic of; Gee, how fucked up is the US Justice system ?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56888875
An arrest warrant, felony embezzlement charge and 20 years of turned-down jobs - all over a Sabrina the Teenage Witch videotape.

The criminal history was slapped on Texas resident Caron McBride after she failed to return the VHS copy of the Nineties sitcom in 1999.

She only found out the truth when she tried to change her name on a driving licence after getting married.
I loved this line of snark in the article
Her name was used to rent the VHS - a black plastic box with spooling tape in it for those who have moved on - in a store called Movie Place in Norman, Oklahoma, on Valentine's Day in 1999.

Could a compost heap start a fire?

There was a shed caught fire and burnt down across from my mum over the weekend. The owners of the shed are blaming other neighbours saying their compost heap must have been too hot and started the fire!

Sounds bollocks to me.

Not if it's properly aerated ( by turning regularly ) and moist. Very unlikely for it to catch fire in our climate unless the heap is really massive or there's something like a bottle on it to act like a magnifying glass in sunshine.

They had just turned it the day before apparently. They also had it staked out and none of the stakes are singed

Remember that ancient TV show, Columbo with Peter Falk?

The series was written by Stephen Bocho, directed by Stephen Spielberg with music by Henry Mancini. Quite an impressive group. No wonder it was so successful.

Spielberg only directed the first episode of Columbo. The other 67 episodes were directed by a variety of directors, including one episode by Peter Falk himself. Similarly, Bochco only wrote 7 of the 68 episodes.

I stand corrected i had just watched the third in the series in Amazon, and those were the people so jumped to a conclusion.

A neat segue into someone who I never appreciated what a genius they were, outside of acting; Patrick McGoohan !

Complete scene stealer in everything he was in; came up with The Prisoner, & directed 5 episodes of Columbo.

Drones.

For a long time I thought of them as 90% gimmick, & 10% useful; but while metal detectors are a scourge to archeology, drones seem to be a technology, that can be an enormous help.

In the hot, dry summer here a few years ago, they did a drone survey of crop marks, & discover this huge, & previously unknown complex, near Newgrange

Image

and this week, an amateur watching Dolphins, found two logboats.

Appreciate this thread is really meant for silliness, but I've nowhere obvious to put his so I'll drop it here. It's a bit silly in the sense of stupidity, but not silly in the sense of it's definitely not fun.

To prove eligibility for a post-career cognitive impairment compensation, black ex-players have to prove a lower current degree of cognitive function as it was assumed that they started with a lower level anyway.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/ ... settlement
Thousands of retired Black professional football players, their families and supporters are demanding an end to the controversial use of “race-norming” to determine which players are eligible for payouts in the NFL’s $1 billion settlement of brain injury claims, a system experts say is discriminatory.

Former Washington running back Ken Jenkins, 60, and his wife Amy Lewis on Friday delivered 50,000 petitions demanding equal treatment for Black players to senior US district judge Anita B Brody in Philadelphia, who is overseeing the massive settlement. Former players who suffer dementia or other diagnoses can be eligible for a payout.

Under the settlement, however, the NFL has insisted on using a scoring algorithm on the dementia testing that assumes Black men start with lower cognitive skills. They must therefore score much lower than whites to show enough mental decline to win an award. The practice, which went unnoticed until 2018, has made it harder for Black former players to get awards.
"a system experts say is discriminatory" - I think, as a lay person, I can say it's discriminatory. The US football system can be nasty at the best of times, but this is taking the piss.

Have I been watching too many conservative podcasts or was Kaepernick actually a good player? I understood he was distinctly average.

The Brighton seagulls are about the most gallus you'll ever see - they wait on the top of the bus stop outside Sainsbury's and take sandwiches from peoples' hands as they are leaving the shop.
They swoop on bags of chips on the beach or food on a café table

They crap all over the place too.

In Scotland we call them shitehawks.

He was fairly average; but he didn't make it to the top table, & then drop from sight, & become unhireable, because of his playing ability.

America doesn't want it's black pro athletes having opinions; not unless they're in the top 0.1%.

Shaq could have an opinion, Kobe could; but not Colin.

It's also interesting to note the difference in narrative between the NFL & NBA !

If the NBA acted the way the NFL did; it would cease to exist; & they damn well know it.

So how come most of the best paid players in the NFL are black? 4 of the top 5 QBs are black I think. You look at the best paid positions and they're overwhelmingly taken by black players when compared to population stats, or so I'm led to believe.

What is it in the way Kaepernick was treated that you think was so wrong? Seems to me he's made himself a multi-millionaire, world famous, and with huge social power off the back of his second rate NFL career.

What's so wrong, is that he was treated differently ! He lost his playing contract, because he dared to have a political opinion. He didn't want a fucking social media following; he wanted to play ball.

It's only in the last decade or so, that black QBs have even become a thing; before that white Americans didn't want to see black QBs on their wheetie boxes. It wasn't that there weren't good black QBs; it was that they weren't being brought thru the universities, & as a result, they never appeared in the draft. Sure, there were black linemen, & receivers etc; but QBs are a very recent thing.

It's the same story with black head coaches. Compare the playing percentages over the last few decades, & then the percentages of black coaches.

Not to put to fine a point on it; the racist trope is that black people don't have the brains to be a QB or coach.

In the 21st century, people still have to deal with this shit.
