Conservative victory (in Hartlepool) marked the death of the Labour Party both as an effective conduit of opposition and an institution representing the working class. It’s over. It can no longer be either, for structural and demographic reasons that its members do not seem to understand.

I was in paroxysms of laughter listening to a succession of Labour gobmerchants attempt to explain away this debacle. Mandelson, Abbott, Russell-Moyle — all were wrapped up in their bizarre delusions, sniping at the different wings of the party, spraying the blame around, utterly missing the point. The only one who made much sense was John McDonell, who insisted, rightly, that Jeremy Corbyn’s economic policies in 2019 were popular north of the Severn-Trent divide. Nationalise everything, invest, tax the rich and abolish the grouse moors. Good left-wing populism.

I disagree with little of that. It was the other stuff that put off the voters back then — the culture stuff. The fashionable obsession with race and interminable gender complexities; the hatred of the UK and the contempt for those who love their country and believe in a sense of place and belonging; the secularism; the lack of respect for the traditional family.

The problem is that in attempting to make Labour electable once more, Keir Starmer ditched Corbyn’s economic policies, which did have an attraction up here, and kept the stuff everyone hated. Starmer took the knee, for example: that will have lost him several million votes. For a lot of former Labour voters Starmer and Corbyn are, as an old Blue Labour chum put it to me, two cheeks of the same liberal arse. The working class and lower middle, easily the majority of the country, are not liberal.

One Labour supporter, inadvertently, put it rather well. Upon hearing the result from Hartlepool, Jane Gray, a “Starmer superfan”, tweeted: “Yep as expected the working class love a bit of nationalism and racism. Well done Hartlepool, you turkeys. I’ve never been and I never will.” That’s it, summed up. An absolute loathing of the people the party was set up to support but supports no longer, because it regards them as uneducated, racist morons.

This is the intractable problem for Starmer, who seems a decent man, and the party. Look at the council election results over the weekend. Labour did well-ish in affluent cities, especially university cities. If Starmer were to embrace the mores and aspirations of the people his party once represented, all those gains — the only ones the party has experienced recently — would vanish. So would his party membership, which is no longer made up of horny-handed trade unionists but the well-orf, the comfortable, the impeccably right-on.

In fairness, there is a place for a party that espouses these values: utterly woke but not impinging too much upon the salaries of the middle class. It might pull in 18-25 per cent of the vote, maybe even a little more in alliance with the Greens and Lib Dems. But the Labour Party we knew is gone. Gone for good. Those votes are not coming back. When the north feels dissatisfied with the Tories, it will look to the independents for succour, not Labour
I mean, apart from posting Rod Liddle - a genuinely vile piece of shit scumbag - there's also the fact that we have some data on why people didn't vote for Labour in these elections. And it's got nothing to do with "woke".

"Woke" at 2%.

Actual, genuine issues: Right at the top. People don't really know what Starmer stands for, they don't think Labour are providing a clear agenda, they don't trust Labour on the economy (this one is funny, of course), 8% divided neatly between being too radical and not radical enough, etc...

There's plenty of discussion to be had about where Labour is actually going wrong, how much of it is their fault vs the messaging coming from the Tory media, how much of it is a holdover from the Corbyn days, and so on.

But if anyone starts wanking on about statues, BLM, and wokery, they're just a cunt who's trying to perpetuate the culture war for their own ends.

This is true, but I think social media (particularly twitter) is more of a trap for Labour MPs than Tory. It's easier to get sucked into the radical left than right on twitter and plenty of their MPs do.

And so, "Levelling up" is now the buzzword du jour. Nice to see an RPG term entering normal use. Nerds like me everywhere nod sagely.

I'm hoping that "Attack of Opportunity", "Critical Hit" and "Meat Shield" are next in the BoJo lexicon

True but the leadership on twitter generally don't get dragged into culture war stories anymore. But they carry on regardless. The Daily Mail will continue with their culture war unabashed! You could have Nigel Farage leading the Labour party and the Daily Mail would hammer the culture war. Sex, gender, race, history are political but they're also the saving grace of dying traditional media because they whip up hatred and frenzy that people click on. Who cares about social care reform when some mental left wing activist with literally zero influence has tweeted about Churchill or gender reassignment.

Rod Liddle is a prick but I think he gets the Northern resentment that seems to mystify the Labour party. Probably helps that he's actually been to Hartlepool.

But also thank you for pointing that out - you're right, woke doesn't even factor in the red wall wave 2 thing. So... Fair enough, obviously, re the report being the wrong one.

However, it is you that has zoned in on the word "woke" which is only mentioned once, and even then in relation to an imaginary party. Look at the reasons folk voted Tory:

Share their values
Care about the issues I care about
Local issues
Best for the future of the country

All those are expressing the sentiments that Liddle mentions.

I don't understand why you find this so hard. The people who didn't vote Labour gave their reasons for doing so, and they don't match Rod Liddle's feverish fiction. Surely you can't expect people who share Tory values - especially the values of THIS Tory government - to vote Labour?!

Fortunately despite their best efforts, Elphicke went down for 2 years!

Five Conservative members of parliament are under investigation over attempts to lobby judges ahead of a hearing in relation to the disgraced former Conservative MP, Charlie Elphicke.
Parliament’s sleaze watchdog confirmed it was investigating the MPs; Roger Gale, Adam Holloway, Bob Stewart, Theresa Villiers and Elphicke’s estranged wife, Natalie, who succeeded him in his Dover and Deal seat.
Using Commons stationery, the group wrote to senior judges to intervene in a hearing on whether references to support the former MP at his sentencing for sexual assault could be made public.

What the hell does that have to do with Liddle's lazy stereotypes and his fact-free analysis of the situation that just so happens to dovetail incredibly neatly with his war on anything to the left of Genghis Khan?

I may have slightly cheated by changing my phrase from parliament to parliamentary session, but I'll honour the bet either way.

They will certainly not establish an effective building regulatory body with effective and independent powers before the next election. At best it'll be some sham, reporting directly to jenrick who will have overseeing powers

If this regulator isn't going to just mirror someone else's standards; I think you'll be owing some pints.

Just defining a standard, & then branding a standard mark; takes a ridiculous amount of time; & that's when your; "Standard", is just mirroring some established one; so you have to move when they do.

Just look at the shite happening around the NI protocol, & things like UK free range marking, & standards.

If the UK were to actually, genuinely, describe their own, "Standards"; there would be an even more, lengthy process, where the suppliers; first decided if the market was worth the effort; & then retooling, certification, & all that shite has to happen.

All of which naturally costs extra; & the home buyer has to pick up the tab.

So the CCJ is today's dead cat (thrown by Private Eye rather than the usual suspects) to distract from the Orban agenda set out in the Queen's Speech?

I see the Royal Family's Twitter account has put out a statement that she just reads the thing, given the flak she's copped on said platform for the torrent if shit it contains.

I see the Royal Family's Twitter account has put out a statement that she just reads the thing, given the flak she's copped on said platform for the torrent if shit it contains.
I think the CCJ could be quite damaging considering the number of Neanderthals in the UK who think the national budget is at all like the household budget. If the PM can't manage his household budget...

Would be helpful if the simps Peston and Kuenssberg who insist on this economically illiterate metaphor continue with it when reporting on his CCJ.

Bet us the taxpayers are footing the legal bill for this

Accurate summary of the what the Tories are up to
Making it possible for the Prime minister to control when a general election takes place, making it harder for people to vote, making it harder to challenge government decisions, and making it harder for anyone to protest about any of this

Shirley using public funds to pay lawyers to do anything in a common, & garden CCJ judgement against a private individual, would be a gross misuse of public funds; & worthy of a Standards in Public Office, investigation itself ?

The simplest, & cheapest option is to just pay the debt, & STFU !

The last thing any politician needs is the TV cameras recording some sheriff putting a clamp on his personal car; or making a guest appearance on "Can't pay, we'll take it away" ?

If the CCJ was actually; "without merit."; the thick cunt should have had his lawyer attended the action in court. Now he just looks like any other cunt trying to avoid paying his debts.

It’s quite possible that there is no debt as this is more than likely a default notice because BJ/no 10 did nothing. It’s also possible that the correspondence from the Court was handled by civil servants at no 10, and they failed to recognise that they should have responded:

If it’s a no 10 screw-up rather than a BJ screw up (which is of course also plausible), then it might be reasonable for no 10 rather than BJ to apply for the CCJ to be set aside.
