Very surprising
Springbokke next 4 years to 2027
Ja, but that is a scary bunch of forwards.
Will be interesting to see if Gatland's plan of trying to avoid them with speed is going to work; because if is doesn't, it's going to be a meat grinder.
The are a couple of units in the backline, but for the most part, they are pretty lightweight. Gatland is definitely going to target the wings with loosies seagulling out wide and hard runners in the midfield.

Why instead? Cobus is on the list as well.
I missed his name!
Super stoked he is in the mix.

Glad that the du preez twins are included
Biggest omission is imo jan serfontein, he would have deserved a call up imo.
Kwagga smith and no Marcel coetzee??
Anyway, go bokke. I trust our selectors!

Not 100% sure but I suspect something to do with him not being allowed to play when his heart 'problem' surfaced.

There’s a lot of quality in there but Elstadt, Orie, Coenie, Nohamba and Scarra should be nowhere near the squad.
Coetzee should be in the 23 let alone the 45. Crazy omission.
Snyman and Lood’s inclusions are a good sign. I’d happily take 1 of them being fit in time at this stage.
Unlucky players:
Wilco Louw
Esterhuizen
Coetzee
Akker
Serfontein

They said they're keeping an eye on Coetzee as it was his first game back. They want to see how he goes over the next 2 weeks. Backup for Duane.sunnybanana wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 8:32 pm There’s a lot of quality in there but Elstadt, Orie, Coenie, Nohamba and Scarra should be nowhere near the squad.

Orie is the only one that I kind-of get. With 2 of the RWC locks in question, there was always going to be a left-field pick at lock for cover. My money was on Jason Jenkins, but with 3 caps already, Orie is just as good a sub in there. No other locks outside the RWC quartet to really speak of at the moment, so might as well bring in somebody that’s already been capped.
Akker very unlucky. Scarra has shown little for the Stormers this year. Coetzee also unlucky. Deserves to be there more than Kwagga.

I genuinely think we have at least another 10 locks better than Orie. Guys like Schickerling, Ruan Botha, Lewies (had another stormer of a game for a weakened Quins side on Friday), Van Heerden, Jenkins.. they all offer far more.
I know transformation considerations come into it but you could easily swap Coenie out for Gqoboka if numbers really matter.

Swapping Coenie out won't make a difference if the two starting props are Ginger and Malherbe. Only place to fit in a POC would be hooker. Which is nailed on already. You have to start looking at locks as Kolisi is nailed in starter and Duane or Marcel being the 8th men with PSDT at 7. So Orie will probably start. In the backline there is no such problem.sunnybanana wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 10:58 pm I genuinely think we have at least another 10 locks better than Orie. Lewies probably the hardest done by yes. He is playing some brilliant rugby for Quins and only a year older than Orie. Don’t think either of them are long term Bok prospects, but as cover Lewies is world class when in the form he is currently. Orie, not as much, but I suspect the issue was the risk of handing out new caps. Orie and Jenkins have already been capped. That might have played a role in the decision making.sunnybanana wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 10:58 pm I genuinely think we have at least another 10 locks better than Orie. Coenie vs Gqoboka is interesting. I’m no fan of Coenie, but I think Rassie and Nienaber know that the Lions are going to target scrums. Seeing what happened to a England in the final made it clear that they have to be competitive there. Coenie at least has some experience packing down against NH props. Gqoboka, while he has 2 caps, might be a little out of his depth should he be called to get injury call up into in the 23?

Nohamba....went completely off the boil second year. Same as Herschel Jantjies. Unfortunately there are always one year wonders and then there are consistent players. Nohamba will struggle to start with Jayden doing an outstanding job currently at the Sharks.
There is also the 5 bar man. Don't forget him. I must say I love the way the Stormers backline is giving the ball air currently. Their flyhalf problem has been solved. So there is no chance of a change there. Even though it was considered before the Bulls match and sensibly turned down . Fassi is an incredibly talented sportsman and in any fairness will get the nod before the 5 bar man after Willie.

Orie has a great work rate. He definitely won't embarrass himself and will pull his weight. Its not beyond the realm of possibility and the only position where a POC can realistically be included in the forwards.sunnybanana wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 5:40 amNo chance in hell is Orie starting.Sards wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 5:10 amSwapping Coenie out won't make a difference if the two starting props are Ginger and Malherbe. Orie has been great since joining the Stormers. Myself would selected Nortje from the Bulls. He performed all season for themSards wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 5:53 amOrie has a great work rate. He deserves his place.
The reality of the situation is that there is a demand for ethnic black players.
Hence the inclusion of Scarra and Nohamba.
They could have left Connie out and chosen Lizo. Then included Acker instead of a very average Scarra.
They could have left Kwagga out and included the Lions Tshtituka and then left out Nohamba and included Hendricks.
Much better squad.
Agreed with all of that. Listen. Herschel has been hond kak this year too.Chilli wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 6:33 amThe reality of the situation is that there is a demand for ethnic black players.

Tshituka is Congolese. Not sure if has plans for SA citizenship but he's only 22 and will definitely be in the mix if he sorts out an SA passport.
Overall I think it's a good squad. There are a lot of players who aren't going to get near the starting team for the Lions tests, but I'd like to see someone like Nohamba be given a run in the SA A team and see if he ups his game.
The biggest problem I have is Scarra ahead of Akker.
But overall there is some serious quality and depth in that team, especially when you thin of the quality that we've left out.

I think these guys are there for the A-team game. Capping Dan Dup, van Rensburg, Wiese for the A-team secures them for the Bok team. Dan du Preez/Jasper are there to back up Duane imo. I believe Rassie would use them before Marcel. The squad contains all the tools necessary to beat the Lions. Hendricks, Serfontein, Akker, Marcel would be the only additions Rassie would need. I think Tyrone Green should be there for the A-team game, he's really coming along for Quins.

Beast is / was a Zimbo. Who played for the Boks while traveling on a Zim passport. Same with the Lions & Stormers Zimbo tighthead.assfly wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 7:16 amTshituka is Congolese. Do the Euro clubs release our players for the EOYT?
Depending on which club
