Maybe he is happier first change. Only have to strangle them first up.

I felt really bad for the lad. You could see his entire world crumble around him when he edged it. I’m clearly mellowing in my dotage.

They both are. What is a par score for the first innings here? (i.e. Is this a good return for NZ?)

About 200 for England! So they're doing pretty well

Seems to be a difficult pitch in bat on. Markham looks clueless.

Markram departs departs for 60, followed in short order by Verreynne.

I know there's a lot of talk about Verreynne's brilliance, but I haven't seen it yet.

SA 128 for four at stumps, lead by 31 runs 6 wickets remain at stumps.

I don't know who Verreynne is, so I looked him up. He's played 4 ODIs. One failure, but also 48 off 64 against Oz, 50 off 50 against Oz, and 62 off 53 against Pakistan. And a first class average of 56 at age 24.

Talk about a tough crowd!

His first class average is pretty good.

And, yes, he can put together a decent ODI knock.

I'm just not happy with the ways he gets himself out.

At Provincial level, he is very good (according to his figures - I haven't watched too much of him apart from the bubble games a few months back where the Cape Cobras didn't do very well), but Test cricket is a big step up.

Happy to be proved wrong, though.

Let's give him more than 1 innings though. He is a youngster, he is on debut, so your comments are extremely harsh.

Well he is in your team, so I’d hope so.

Which UK channel was the Windies v Proteas on?
Edit: figured it out. BT sport. Oh well.

Hey, I did say I hope I'm wrong.

I do support them, but I also think I'm entitled to my opinion.

It'd be pretty damn boring if we all voiced unanimous support for every move made, every selection made and every decision.

We'll just have to see what Verreynne does from here on. He's definitely earned his call up and I'd like to see him get every chance to push his claims. It's just that I have my doubts.

If you look at guys like Rassie vdd and Temba, these are guys that are difficult to get out because they value their wickets so highly. I'm not convinced (currently) that Verreynne is cut from the same cloth.

Yes.

Those two.

Batting averages don't tell the entire story.

(Why am I getting flack for not being a proper supporter when you have someone else dissing two of our better players?)

I hope it's better than what was observed on TV yesterday at the test match, no masks and zero social distancing in large chunks of the crowd.

Masks not needed at seats but needed when moving around and inside. No milling around the bars etc.

Allocated seats only and well spaced out.

Really looking forward to today's first session. England will be hoping to bat till lunch with 320+ runs on the board. NZ want 3 quick wickets and Conway still in at lunch...

Great stuff by Lawrence and Wood. They probably added 50 or 60 runs more than England expected.

That wasn't great by Broad - dangerously close to dissent.

Does Kane Williamson need to pop into the changing rooms and give England a talk about sportsmanship?

Cause he'll do it......he'll feckin' do it.

Doully wondering if Wood has picked up a slight niggle. Judging by his action in the last overs he bowled he appears to be falling away at the delivery point.

Van dussen really is a slow batsman.
Needed the change to get some runs on.
