She did it? Wow!
The Tennis Thread
Why would she not ‘choose’ to represent Britain? She has lived here since she was 2. Or do you think she isn’t really British?
“It was a pet, not an animal. It had a name, you don't eat things with names, this is horrific!”
Given that the US tennis player Shelby Rogers has said she expected to receive death threats on social media following her recent loss to Raducanu in the US open, and the Japanese player Naomi Osaka has complained about the pressures of playing top class tennis and the affect this has had on her mental health, it seems these pressures might not be confined to just the British press and fans.
In the circumstances this comment just seems like the same old anti-UK bias from the usual suspects.
Blimey. Raducanu equally comfortable in the semifinal 6-1 6-4. Other semifinal won by the Canadian Leylah Fernandez who turned 19 earlier this week.
Bit of a changing of the guard in Women's tennis? Might see these two knocking lumps off each other for at least ten years.

Anyone know if it will be shown on normal TV?
EDIT: hope some of the cunts who gave her a hard time after Wimbledon are feeling shit this morning.

Cunt Morgan has been busy insinuating it was because he criticised here that she toughened up.Slick wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 7:52 amBloody hell, just seen this! Born in Canada with a Romanian father and Chinese mother. Would be interesting to see if she'd arrived across the Channel whether Morgan and co would be so keen on claiming her as British. Especially if she was no good.
Did you miss Wimbledon when Morgan was not tremendously keen on her? He was criticising her in a way that he usually reserves for mixed race American women.Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:18 am Born in Canada with a Romanian father and Chinese mother. I realise and hope you are you are just having a go at ‘Morgan and co’ but I find this post like the one from Calculon above a bit personal. Why would she have to be ‘claimed’ to be British if she has lived here since she was 2 and it is the only country she has ever known as home. The topic should not even be fit for any discussion.Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:18 am Born in Canada with a Romanian father and Chinese mother. Piers Morgan is a total wanker. But I've not been aware he's never taken umbrage with people with different born with different national or ethnic backgrounds being regarded as British before.PCPhil wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:49 amI realise and hope you are you are just having a go at ‘Morgan and co’ but I find this post like the one from Calculon above a bit personal. Only extremist on twitter make that case. Morgan has slagged off numerous big sports people and celebrities. It's only race baiters who make this case, literally off 1 or 2 examples out of the many he's mouthed off on. He was only slagging off Brett Lee this year.robmatic wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:31 amDid you miss Wimbledon when Morgan was not tremendously keen on her? Morgan was wrong on Raducanu but it was for the manner of her Wimbledon exit. There was much wrong with his criticism but I doubt think prejudice came into it at all.
I have little or no interest in tennis but this is a great storySlick wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 7:52 amBloody hell, just seen this! Despite 3 extra games due to qualifying, Raducanu has still played over an hour lass than Fernandez this US Open.BnM wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:26 am Look at these scores Bit tired today.

They've known each other for years in junior tennis. I don't know if one would call them friends, but they're certainly friendly.
Raducanu is just being weird, yes she's given up some break point chances and hasn't been punished for that, but that aside she's producing high class shots with a low error rate, and that low error rate would please someone like Djokovic, it's not something a kid is supposed to be able to put together.
I don't, and I doubt torq does either, have a problem with people having multiple national identities. But certain UK journalists will, although less so if she keeps on winning. And it's always amusing to see how the british press and some fans, will play up her britishnessPCPhil wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:49 amI realise and hope you are you are just having a go at ‘Morgan and co’ but I find this post like the one from Calculon above a bit personal. The fan comment was more directed at eldanialtwat and call me Bill who was claiming she was a fake on PR, but only when eldanialtwat was convinced she wasn't going to go past the quarters. It's all good now that she's shown herself to be the real deal

Raducanu's run is actually historic. And it's a fair assessment saying it's unexpected, especially seeing she herself said she didn't expect this.
But yeah, don't let the facts get in the way of angry posters who just want to make personal attacks at anybody who they disagree with.

There are more meeting places in tennis than just on court. I'm not saying they grew up together or are especially close, merely they have known each other for around a third of their lives and they seem to get along just fine, whether in the locker room or away from tennis
I was reading the report on teen sensation Emma Raducanu, she is quite something, the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final in the open era, first Brit woman to reach a final since Virginia Wade and all sorts of other groovy stats, however someone in the comments wrote, “The last time a British woman was in a Grand Slam final Abba were in the charts”
to which someone replied, “Abba are in the charts now”
The Whoosh of the Year award goes to…

On Radio 4 earlier they mentioned when Fernandez had her birthday she brought some cupcakes into the locker room and Raducanu was one of those who went over to have a cake and wish her well. That's perhaps driven in part by their being closer in age than much of the locker room and their standing in the locker room, at least as was, but they're certainly not players who ignore each other, they'll have a chat and a laugh, and they'll often have been in the same orbit since they were 12/13eldanielfire wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:35 amTrue.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:09 ameldanielfire wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:45 am

That was precisely my point. And not just Morgan. Had she washed up in a rubber dinghy in Dover 16 years ago and was now on the dole, pretty sure there would be a lot of changed attitudes.PCPhil wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:49 amI realise and hope you are you are just having a go at ‘Morgan and co’ but I find this post like the one from Calculon above a bit personal. It is very fit for discussion because it highlights the shifting standards employed.

Could be. But in women's tennis there are so many false dawns, Ostapenko, Stephens, Kenin, Andreescu, etc who win one slam, have big things predicted and then don't repeat for years as their form drops off a cliff after a slam win. Some might grab a couple, but we haven't seen a great women's rivalry for a long time. Even the Sharapova-Serena one never really happened after Wimbledon 2004.
To be fair, Stephens was 24 when she won a major. That’s kind of in the peak age range for women’s tennis ( Serena is the exception, that’s what makes her great). So her winning one was her peak. Andreescu and Kenin won in the last two years and are still top ten players, so are part of the same generation. Andreescu won her first major at the end of 2019, then injured her knee, then pandemic. Kenin won the last pre pandemic major, got to the French Open final and missed most of this year before Wimbledon with illness and injury. So their form hasn’t dropped off a cliff. Add those two in and it could be a fantastic time coming up for women’s tennis.eldanielfire wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 3:09 pmCould be. Writing off people at 21 and 22 after they won majors at 20 and 21 is a pretty shit attitude tbh.

Also does false dawn really apply to anyone who merely contests at the upper level, say being in the top 10 or even top 20, and doesn't go on to win 3 or more majors after winning a major? Is the expectation even we'll simply have more like Serena and Roger?
