John Hume Ggggggggggooooooonnnnnnneeeeee
He really did. I see they are saying after a short illness but tbf he had dementia for years the poor sod. People forget the strain he was under. Puts the crap Michelle and Arlene get up to in context. This article is from.around when he stepped down and it's pretty visceral https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... ernireland

If there was a decent example of patriotism, he was its embodiment, for me. Not a pol, but a statesman. RIP. A hat tip to his father, who set it all in motion with "you can't eat a flag..."
The island has lost one of the greats of my lifetime; if not the greatest. I'll open a good bottle tonight.

RIP.
A lot of people drank excessively in his generation. That has changed significantly for a significant proportion of the population. I always got the sense Hume was pained by a lot of what he saw, what he had to do, the compromises he had to make and just drank to dull a lot of it. He was a lovely drunk by all accounts. Anyway his boozing ensured he wasn't a saint and who the fück wants one of them

Because of the likes of him I can head north to watch a game of rugby without worrying if some headbanger has decided today’s the day for an auld carbomb
I’ll always remember him crying at that funeral. Fuckssake showed the ridiculousness of it all
