SIYA KOLISI
I was never a fan.
I never understood the hype. He was just another quota player. He was lazy. He had a poor work rate. He was not a good captain. He was made captain only to fill the demographics of our country and please our political leaders.
Before and at the 2019 RWC I called him a decidedly average player.
And I stand by all of that.
HOWEVER
Since the Lions Series he is a transformed man. He puts in HUGE shifts every Test. He carries the ball, he hits the rucks, he tackles like a demon. He is captaining the Boks really well and leading the team on the field.
I am not sure what happened to transform him, but credit must be given to him and those around him.
What a player!
What a captain!
I am so happy that he is leading our Springbok Team!

There is a lot made of his background and the trials he has endured as a player developing. It could not have been easy for him. Now that he is surrounded by an environment that took the time to get his head straight he has grown in leaps and bounds. Onwards and upwards
Did he skipper school and age-group sides, or were his leadership qualities recognised relatively late in his career?Sards wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:41 am There is a lot made of his background and the trials he has endured as a player developing. I second this completely. After being a big critic of him, I've become a massive fan. The last few matches he has been an outstanding player and captain. He really looks like he's enjoying himself out there too. Long may it continueChilli wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:36 am I was never a fan.

He was made Springbok captain when at WP.....but he was purely a quota player as Siya did not get the proper support for his issues and a proper training regime....He was spiralling downhill at a rapid rate . The Sharks took him over and got him onto programmes to improve his fitness and slowly brought him back into the game. I was one of his critics....he was really a passenger in the side prior. But it seems that the change in enviroment changed his game and attitude and I am one of his biggest fans currently. He deserves to lead the side...whereas before it was Duane Vermeulen getting all the credit.Gumboot wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:02 amDid he skipper school and age-group sides, or were his leadership qualities recognised relatively late in his career?Sards wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:41 am There is a lot made of his background and the trials he has endured as a player developing. He was made captain of the Stormers in 2017 and bok captain in 2018.
Previously he played 2 seasons of junior rugby for the boks.

So you're saying he deserves to be the captain now but didn't when you lot won the RWC 2 years ago?Sards wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:08 amHe was made Springbok captain when at WP.....but he was purely a quota player as Siya did not get the proper support for his issues and a proper training regime....He was spiralling downhill at a rapid rate . Vok ja, it's obvious Sards hate him while playing for WP & Stormers who developed him as player and captain. Now he is the best next thing.Big Nipper wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:30 amDoesn't it get tiring to do this childish schtick every day?Sards wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:08 amHe was made Springbok captain when at WP.....but he was purely a quota player as Siya did not get the proper support for his issues and a proper training regime....He was spiralling downhill at a rapid rate . Kolisi was a good captain since leading WP.
Not sure if he captained Grey High.

He was very good for the most part between 2013-2017 but often poor during the first 2 years of his Bok captaincy. He’s always had carrying ability but went missing too often. Great to see him playing consistently well again.

He is a completely different player since he moved to the Sharks......Hence this thread.
I take my hat off to him.....proved a lot of people wrong

Since winning the RWC I think his commitment has been unquestionable. There's been a noticeable uptick in his performances and he's 100% consistent now. He's gotten fitter, stronger and more confident is his play.
Biggest improvement has been is defensive work when wide. Being fitter has allowed him to be in the right place more often and it's shown. He's been absolutely rock solid and he draws very few penalties.
His captaincy has been solid throughout, understated at times. He picks his moments with referees well too. Best captain we've had since John Smit.

Agree on the sentiment here, he is playing and captaining really well this year. His head seems in the right place, his fitness has improved. It is what moving out of one's comfort zone can do to a person. Guys like Willemse, Bosch, ... should do the same.
It is a thread to show that a person can improve themselves so much if they put their mind to it.
You should give it a try...........................................heaven knows you need it.
That is a fair statement.Gumboot wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 7:14 amSo you're saying he deserves to be the captain now but didn't when you lot won the RWC 2 years ago?Sards wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:08 amHe was made Springbok captain when at WP.....but he was purely a quota player as Siya did not get the proper support for his issues and a proper training regime....He was spiralling downhill at a rapid rate . His form was poor and leadership not very good.
However he has been OUTSTANDING of late.
Did Rassie pick and made Kolisi captain after his move to the saaks?
Springboks, Stormers and WP supporter.
Get your facts straight boet, or I will call you out on it. I wasn't me who flounced for a week or 2, only to crawl back with tail between legs.
Springboks, Stormers and WP supporter.
Pretty much.
He's always had flashes of brilliance in pockets of his career.
It's more an indictment of his coaches that so few of them were able to create an environment where he could thrive.
Huh.....are you on meds. When did I flounce. When did I crawl back. You are making things up again.
And you will continue to be a Karen and deflect instead of acknowledging our captains remarkable form of late. Are you a hater dude

If you go back to Rassie/Nienabers career as coach at the Stormers he brought Stormers players like Kolbey, de Allende, Duanne Vermeulen, Kolisi, PSdT, Etsebeth, Kitshoff, Bongie and Malherbe through the system. That's 9 current Springbok stars and the heart of the current Springboks.

You realize you are saying Rassie and Nienaber couldn't get the best out of Kolisi.
It needed the Sharks to do that.

He let Willie go to the Sharks. That was a mistake and now we need to suffer.Sards wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 10:31 amOomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 10:29 am If you go back to Rassie/Nienabers career as coach at the Stormers he brought Stormers players like Kolbey, de Allende, Duanne Vermeulen, Kolisi, PSdT, Etsebeth, Kitshoff, Bongie and Malherbe through the system. Kolisi is performing for the Boks, not for the saaks. I don't think that is the spirit of this thread at all. It's an appreciation of his improvement from when he was first made Bok captain to now. Even during the RWC fans (myself included) were questioning his form. But the last 6 months his improvement has been monumental.
