A singing concert and then a hall full of screaming girls playing hockey? Why didn’t you just go lick some Covid patients in ICU in Groote Schuur?

Covid-19: Health dept announces immediate end to contact tracing

The health department says all Covid-19 contact tracing should be stopped with immediate effect.
This is except where infections are picked up in congregate settings and cluster outbreaks.
The department said contacts must not be tested unless they develop symptoms.
All Covid-19 contact tracing should be stopped with immediate effect, except where infections are picked up in congregate settings and cluster outbreak situations, the Department of Health said on Thursday.

In an updated memorandum, dated 23 December, the department said that "containment strategies are no longer appropriate" and that a mitigation strategy is the only viable way to curb transmission of the virus, especially in the context of the new Omicron variant.

It noted there was new information about Covid-19, including high immunity levels in the population from prior exposure to the virus (around 60% - 80%) and/or vaccination; that there was a high number of asymptomatic cases, and that only a small proportion of infections were diagnosed through lab testing.

All contacts must continue with heightened monitoring strategies, such as daily temperature testing and symptom screening, of any early signs of Covid-19 infection. If they develop symptoms, they should be tested and be managed according to the severity of the symptoms, it said.

Contacts must not be tested unless they develop symptoms, the department said.

Quarantining

The quarantine requirement for people who have come into contact with someone who has tested positive should also be stopped with immediate effect, the department said. This applies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated contacts.

No testing for Covid-19 is required - unless the contact becomes symptomatic.

Reports of a rare heart condition linked to the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine should not deter teens from getting the jab.

The department said:

Quarantine has been costly to essential services and society as many people stay away from their work and thus lose their income and children miss on their schooling.
Isolation of mild cases

Isolation rules are applicable to vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.

Last week, the Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) on Covid-19 advised that the isolation period for people who test positive for Covid-19 and are symptomatic be reduced from 10 to seven days, News24 reported.

According to the department, persons with mild symptoms should isolate for eight days. However, it notes that these individuals should continue wearing face masks at all times for the duration of the eight days - including at home, work, and in public spaces.

These individuals do not need to test for Covid-19 via a PCR or antigen test eight days after their isolation period and before returning to work.

In circumstances where isolation exceeds eight days, this must be supported by a medical report, the department said.

Asymptomatic

For individuals who are asymptomatic (displaying no symptoms), no isolation period is required.

The department advised individuals to do self-observation for 5-7 days for the development of any symptoms. They should also take precautions by avoiding spaces where there are gatherings, and continue to wear a face mask and practice physical distancing.

Severe disease

The isolation period for individuals with severe disease, described as those who test positive and have symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain, is set at 10 days after they have achieved clinical stability.

These individuals must also wear a face mask at all times for the duration of the 10 days of isolation. No PCR or antigen test is required after their isolation period.

Speaking during a media briefing on a panel with South African scientists, Epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim said not much is known about the Omicron variant's behaviour and how transmissible it is.

While most of the cases of a new Covid-19 variant have been detected in Gauteng, Health Minister Joe Phaahla and scientists believe it may also be present in other provinces.

South Africa has enough unused doses of Pfizer vaccines to immunise half of the country's 6.5-million children aged 12 to 17. But they'll only be getting one dose of the two-shot vaccine.

Severe cases beyond the 10-day isolation period must be supported by the medical report, the department added.

Some common sense at last.

You Saffas seem to handle this pandemic quite well.

I know right. Cape Town was going off over the weekend. I went for a swim on Sunday at St James and then coffee at Kalk Bay. Streets packed and every establishment crammed to the rafters.

Shame SAHPRA doesn't share that common sense. It's been 5 months since my elderly parents, both with comorbidities, got their jabs but they have to wait another month to be eligible for the booster

Bummer of a Christmas. All still isolating till Tuesday. So the MIL cooked us Christmas lunch and dropped it off for us . Wife struggles a bit with the chest but the boys and I are raring to go and have extreme cabin fever. I never felt any of the symptoms and if I had them just didn't notice. Had a family to look after , after all. Missing the beach . Kids are missing friends. Either I have had it , a few times, or it's just not interested in me. There have been weeks at a time where I felt very exhausted but that's it. But like us men do you just soldier on. Maybe the pappegaaitwak keeps it at bay.

Ultimately we got stuck into home maintenance just to keep us sane. Sick of this pariah status. One thing I know for sure. This Omicron version is just like a common cold. Nothing more. Such a hoo ha about nothing.

The greatest comfort is that there has been a tiny swell running since this latest episode. From Tuesday the swell picks up to 6 foot which will be great because I can't wait to pull on the old wetsuit and fins and get me some barrels

Isolating in a mates empty flat in Gardens Cape Town. Excuse to sit and watch cricket for 5 days without being bothered. Just hear cold symptoms.

Most of my symptoms have gone. Just a background headache that comes back occasionally.

I got off so lightly. Can't help but think of what it could have been if I wasn't jabbed or it was the Delta variant.

Yes I just have a runny nose and feeling a bit flat. Had a couple of shitty headaches but just slept them off. I have a great place to recover. This is my view from the balcony.

Still positive, and so is the wife. To further complicate matters, my 74 year old mother has developed a sore throat. We thought she had somehow managed to escape it, but will do a rapid test on her today. She's here on holiday from SA, so trying to figure out how we deal with medical insurance if it comes to that.

Hope she's in the clear. Thankful my 75 year old mother, who struggles with the concept of social distancing, hasn't had it.

My 95 year old mother is very ill with COVID.

I'm having to cut short my trip in the Kalahari to get into Upington to catch a flight to Joburg to drive down to Nottingham Road on Friday.

My MIL is avoiding me like the plague. Even though I have shown no symptoms. She reckons I am the carrier and want to kill her by infecting her. Been one of my most pleasant Xmas hols by far.

I tested negative this morning. Exactly 2 weeks from when I think I contracted it.

Rest of the family all still positive but in good health and spirits.

No it is not the crazy one that I was engaged to in 2017. Thank God for that. That piece of work wanted my friends to sign a letter she had drawn up where she claimed all sorts of insane stuff about me sleeping with her friends and being a crack addict so she could give it to my family. Was on the verge of approaching courts to have a restraint order issued. Crazy crazy
