As Bill Burr said: "... and ya had one ballad every album. Started off in black and white and when the guitar solo came in, it went to colour. Aa-aa ... that was music!"

Put on an old playlist the other day and forgot Stabbing Westward - an industrial band if you don't know them (What Do I Have to Do / Save Yourself) had this super soft song!

Something else from that list ... Filter (who also had Take a Picture as a hit, but this is another 'softy').

Quite a lot of bands have acoustice version of their songs these days:

The original is fairly soft by their standards anyway, it's not quite a ballad though.

A different spin on this could be bands taking a soft song and doing it heavy? The Punk Goes Pop compilations always have a few along those lines

I hope no one posts Disturbed’s godforsaken butchering of Simon & Garfunkel.

Great track. I feel a few pinched harmonics coming over me.

Also ...

I was teaching when I first got these, vehicle-less in Australia. Co-worker offered me a lift home and asked what I was listening to (still had the ol' discman). Popped it in the car's cd player and she loved this stuff ... not so much the heavier stuff.

Pretty much everything off Water, Air and Earth fit the bill. I've always loved:

I remember lending a girl I was seeing the Fire & Water double EP. Told her to start with Water and she was super into that, but thought Fire was a different band altogether given the stylistic change.

This one I'm kind of cheating. Ministry before they became a industrial band were a new wave band.

Listen to this and yes this is Ministry: and yes that is Al Jourgensen singing:

I love the Pumpkins, but I think this clip illustrates perfectly the inherent weakness of Billy Corgan's voice.
