None with Corbyn gone. Blair was keen on restarting UK nuclear energy. Was looking at interview questions a lot of companies still have would you have an issue working in nuclear but not would you have an issue working in oil and gas. Some of the grads have a lot more issue with the latter these days. Germany would be further along with decarbonising their economy if they hadn't shutdown their nuclear plants.

What’s the the state of the game with the Rolls Royce mini-reactors? There’s been talk of having them at Wylfa and Trawsfynydd.

We need to commit enough money to actually build them. They will be over budget and take longer than expected. If you build enough cost and speed of building will come down due to the smaller scale. TBH we need them to replace existing nuclear capacity.

There is a reason why as someone who works in or associated sectors to energy my house is well insulated with solar panels and a battery instead of me having a nice car. Fossil fuel companies are going to fight to the bitter end and oppose the energy transition when and where ever possible.

Currently pay £1,680 a year with Scottish Power. Quote just received for the same tariff - £7,561.39. On the bright side, I could get 6p off that if I go for boiler insurance.

Ok, I’m starting to do the maths.

I’m looking at £2,800 per year. At the current floating price.

Gas is about 2/3 of my bill.

Just been checking my meter readings to see how much I’m using per day.

115 kwh each day gas (10.5m3)
11 kwh each day electric

At rates 4.17p /kwh for gas, or 45.95p per cubic metre
And 24.11p /kwh for elect

How much are you guys on?

When it comes to average gas consumption, the figures are a little higher. A household with low consumption will probably get through around 8,000 kWh per year, while a high consumption household could use up to 17,000 kWh per year.
I used 5900 over 50 days !!!

So 43,000 for my house hold for a year. Although the 50 day period was a winter one.

Pretty low usage, single occupant, gas for heating and hot water only. Though the house is cold for 4 - 5 months most of the day, I try and wear loads of warm clothes and put up with it:

Daily:
55 - 65 kw/h each day gas (4 - 5 m3) Oct - Mar
6 kw/h each day electric (Oct - Mar)

10 - 15 kw/h each day gas (~1.0 m3) Apr - Sep for hot water only
4 - 5 kw/h each day electric (Apr - Sep)

Yearly
10 - 11 000 kw/h gas ( 950 - 1000 m3 )
1850 - 2000 kw/h electric

Not too sure about the m3 readings as until recently I was on some ancient arcane imperial unit measurement!

Just found this on British Gas website

Electricity unit rate 28.34p per kWh plus standing charge of 45.34p per day and gas unit rate 7.37p per kWh plus standing charge of 27.22p per day. Values might not match exactly due to rounding.

Ouch !!

Current gas charges (fixed rate expiring) going to >>> from 1st April:

Standing charge: 26.074p per day >>> 27.220p per day

Unit rate: 3.482p per kWh >>. 7.319p per kWh
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current electric charges going to >>> from 1st April:

Standing charge: 24.04p per day >>> 41.66p per day

Unit rate: 21.56p per kWh >>. 29.49p per kWh

No new fixed price tariffs on offer...

The electrics is with SSE, you might get a slightly better rate with a smart meter

“ For gas, first of all, we're seeing a big rise, an almost doubling of the unit rate – which is the rate you pay for the amount of energy you use – which is going from 4.1p to 7.4p a unit. The standing charge, which is the amount you pay per day just for having a gas supply, is increasing slightly from 26.1p a day to 27.2p a day.

"For electricity, there's a big (but not as big as gas) jump in the unit rate, which is going from 21p to 28p a unit. However, the standing charge is nearly doubling from 25p a day to 45p a day.
Sounds like the energy companies are all heading to the cap of 7.4p for each kwh on gas.

Yes, I imagine it’s huge. £200 extra a month for many will be crippling. Especially those retired.

It’s just lucky we are getting in to spring.

For anyone on the standard variable rate it's not so steep an increase since it also went up last October. I had a very good fixed rate tariff on gas from last March so yes it's a huge increase but at least I had the benefit of a the low cost over the winter...swings and roundabouts...

Bizarrely got a letter from British Gas last week to say I was £600 in credit for my last year (good fixed rate tariff ended on 28/2) and my DD was being reduced from £150 to £89. This week I got another letter telling me my £89 direct debit would not cover the new costs and it was rising to £229. No shit Sherlock.

Pensioners who are struggling now will be in big trouble. My fixed tariff ends in a couple of months after two years at £155 per month, it will rise to around £300 per month... standard variable rate... as you say, luckily its the start of summer... the best fixed price tariff is £600 per month. Hope that changes in future...

I am with Octopus.
Had 2 rises last year.
Live in a 130 year old stone house with Economy 7 for the main heating +hot water
Last 12 months I have used about 6500Kwh electric in total
Was on DD of £112/month and will likely end the year with about £20 Credit.

I like a cool house, so average winter temps are 14/15c, downstairs bathroom did get down to just 2c at one point.
Let us say it wasn't used very often

Next years pricing looks like being £50/month more.

I have vaguely looked at solar, front of house is sort of sw facing but not sure if the very old roof supports would take any extra weight.

As for Heat Pumps ROFLMAO

Central heating has made every body soft.
When I came to the UK, one of the biggest shocks was living in houses that would have ice inside you bedroom window in the winter.

Personally I don't need much heat. I seem to have an inbuilt furnace and rarely feel cold.. but the rest of my family feel it badly.. we have central heating on a lot during the summer because they are cold... especially my elderly mother...

Had a quick look at at Scottish Energy o see what fixed price they'd offer for elec/gas combined.

They quoted £500 a month.

Our house is pretty poor from an insulation perspective but that's just a bonkers amount.

If you’re stuck on floating rate like me, they say to remember to submit a meter reading before next month, so you get charged at the lower rate until the meter reading.

I guess if meter reading done after, they charge the full prev period usage at the new inflated rate.

Until I read this thread I didn't realise UK gas customers are billed in respect of increments of watt hours rather than increments of joules.

Using what (ho ho) is generally an electricity measure makes it easier to grasp for dual fuel customers, maybe?

Yes, it’s measured in cubic meters and then converted to kilowatt hours. I guess it being useful should you want to compare heating costs. Assuming near 100% conversion efficiency. Which both do, until of course you go in to heat pumps which have 300% efficiency.

Although I would add Joules is just another energy metric.
1 kWh = 3,600,000 J

So it’s no different at all, should it be quoted in joules. The conversion of volume to energy has still been done.

Also local planning interests. Plus you have to assume with the level of risk being piled onto the contractors building it the Treasury isn’t really interested either

I really don't think that people willrealise how the governemnt has mismanged the economy and the energy industry untill they have the nmassive increases in energy hit them in their pockets.
it's going to be horrendous very soon and then again in Octiber it's going to be catastrophic.
This is what people voted for so C'est la vie.

The energy situation has been fucked for 20 years or more - no one wants to build a power plant and any that are built take a generation for no real reason. Same will happen with drinking water - we refuse to build reservoirs
