Schools Stats. On one level this is good and bolsters your thesis that the schools will probably get going. Certainly it's better than I had envisaged. On the other it points to the fact there will be loads of teachers not in work and when one dies...

One will probably die at some stage but we only had three healthcare workers die so the risk is reasonably low. Now if they were serious they would offer voluntary early retirement to the over 60’s...

I take your point but I think they are probably a bit older than health care workers and so many department were closed during the pandemic, and still are, so had no patient contact.

Yes the age profile is certainly older, but their exposure will be much lower. Will be an interesting experiment alright. Any teacher with an underlying condition or over the age of 60 should probably be offered early retirement

Really a stark contrast between the sacrifices of the medical profession and the selfishness of the teaching profession

Look at how dangerously worded this headline is from the IT. What it should say is Ireland hasn't applied for a loan yet but can if it wants. Instead it reads like the EU are withholding the money and all the fringe pricks on the left and right can babble on Facebook a out it having not read it properly.
We can borrow money at cheaper rates than the EU will charge for it. If you look at the list of countries who have not applied for a loan, they are nearly all Northern European with sound finances.

"Mr Justice Sheehan said he accepted the “utmost importance” of abiding by Government advice and for political leaders to set a good example “but the relentless fuelling of public anger by some politicians and some sections of the media is in my view not good for democracy. It needs to be explained clearly “how the drive for ratings is affecting the quality and fairness of public discourse,” said the former Central Criminal Court judge who retired in 2017. There is a danger that good people will refrain from entering public life having witnessed the personal consequences for many people of having made one serious mistake,” he said."

Hammerson have appointed Irish architects to help prepare a planning application for the "Carlton" site on O'connell ST, based on the overall plan prepared by Acme with a hope to submitting in early 2021.

Great news for that part of town, but I suspect it may well be Autumn 2021, or even 2022 before the application is submitted, given the hoops DCC will make them jump through.

its a retired judge excusing the behaviour of another judge, hardly the most persuasive argument. lads I know I'm going against the "everything on joke Duffy or uttered by sinn Fein" is populism gone mad but Phil Hogan especially and the attendees at the event behaved like fcukin ejits with zero cop on. is there any Covid rule that big Phil didnt break ? did he lick any Gardaí ? and throw in a driving while on the phone for good measure ? anyone on the phone while driving is a fcukin arsehole in my opinion - it screams fcuk you, I've more important sh1t to deal with than your safety. good mate of mine's brother died suddenly last weekend in Kildare, mate flew back from Seattle and couldn't even attend the funeral, he's around for 15 days before flying back, and we're trying to figure out if we can meet up and not break isolation rules, Kildare lock down rules etc ; meanwhile these fcukin edgits......

I'm very sorry to hear that, and feel for your friend.

However Covid restrictions didn't stop every shinner in the country travelling to Belfast for a funeral, and I don't recall a whimper from you about that, nor any demand that MLOD resign.

Hogan was told that the dinner was compliant, and was stupid not to leave when he found that out it wasn't. The primary culprits here are the organisers, and the hotel who assured them the could hold the dinner in compliance with rules. The only people who win from more collateral damage are the shinners, trots and anarchists who deep down don't believe in the nation in the first place.

hang on - I completely agree that the Shinners are in the same boat and are just as guilty for double standards ; was listening to some Shinner getting put in his box by Mary Wilson last Friday and it was a thing of beauty ; why is that every event has to come down to whataboutery on which party you're attacking/not attacking ? and spare me the poor Phil relied on what he was told ffs - everyone is responsible for knowing the laws of the land - you would think the cream of Irish politics etc would be better versed than the average Joe on the street ; my missus was telling me about someone who had called in to radio that was on a family holiday in Clifden last week ; their 7 year old son was passing the event and asked the parent...."can all these people be doing this during covid ?" which I actually do believe - my own 7 year I think would have copped it (funnily enough we were in Clifden last Thursday when the sh1te was hitting the fan).

Must be very difficult for your friend, I've heard a few stories like that and it puts our own 'covid struggles' into context.

not defending the lads at the golf dinner at all, there has to be some personal responsibility for your actions and blaming the hotel/organisers is pretty crappy and just shines a light on 'the rules don't apply to me' attitude that is so prevalent across all Irish society.

I thought the important part of the article was “but the relentless fuelling of public anger by some politicians and some sections of the media is in my view not good for democracy", definitely something that needs to be called out more. Politicians are always going to be arseholes and look for any angle to get a bump in polls but the media have a responsibility to deliver facts along with some informed/balanced opinion which they appear to have abandoned. The difference in reporting stories on FF/FG (golf-gate) compared to SF (funerals and having to get permission to makes statements to the Gardai) is pretty stark and leads to an almost unbelievable position where SF are able to occupy the moral high ground.

It's of no real historical significance.
It was built, in an English Arts and Crafts style, in 1907 as part of the Dublin Exhibition of that year. It was later rented by the O'Rahilly as a base in Dublin for a couple of years before 1916 - but it is not like an old Irish family house or anything like it. Later still it was owned by the Roches of Roches Stores fame afaik.

Until this development proposal, no one, from the 1916 veterans up to modern day Republican SF thought the house as historically significant. Because it is not.

This is worse even than the Moore Lane Shite that were declared a national monument in a particularly stupid legal judgement. And don't get me started on that.

Literally just keeping a house for the sake of it. Some people just hate change and progress. Obviously houses of great historic, cultural or architectural significance need to be protected. This just isn’t one of those.

You really are the king of whataboutery. You are actually worse than most Shinnerbots - you literally cannot let a single disparaging comment about an FG public person pass without attacking the poster, their motives, their patriotism, their intelligence.....

You've gotten worse as the lockdown & chaos in Government has gone on.

Mine was meant as a joke on the typical Irishman wanting his steak well done as opposed to medium rare. Each being 'done'.

I don't see what's bizarre about it.

The cases have been rising for around 3 weeks, increased deaths should only really be started to be seen right now. The cases remain amongst the young and this is reflected in the hospital figures.

We have to stop comparing to March time when we were miles behind the tracking of this virus.

The death rate will likely be down a bit generally because of some better treatments but I don't share Cam's optimism on it being less virulent, we are just seeing closer to reality on how fatal this is.

They haven't really. On the back of vastly increased testing they've gone up to a new baseline, and stayed there. Numbers aren't increasing.

Yes, it is not really surprising. Before only sick people were tested, and even then it was only very sick people.
Now that testing is open to healthy people, we are finding out the truer level of asymptomatic infection.

Which leads to the question why ?

If the virus is in the wild in Ireland, which it is, have those susceptible to its worst effects mostly got it already; or has the virus subtly changed so that it doesn't affect people so badly ?

People seem surprised that Hogan had to make visits to Kildare both before and after Golfgate. Don't they realise that he has serious documents that he must keep secret. He cannot leave them lying around some hotel where some cleaner could realise their value to the brits or yanks.

The fact he stores them in his golf bag is neither here nor there.

Infection control for the most vulnerable has possibly worked as intended?

Meanwhile everyone else has relaxed to the extent that it's slowly spreading through the healthy population.

In related news, our youngest has cold symptoms and mild fever.

Our first illness in the house since Jan. Just before returning to school.

Not having the GP consultation until tomorrow lunchtime so if they send him for test, won't be until the weekend before we know. Fun.
