You should really try travelling in from east and Midlothian on a regular basis. The traffic calming measures in the Buckstone/ Braids area are horrendous, forcing all vehicles onto Pentland Terrace and Comiston Road which causes huge tailbacks every day. Same with them closing off Mayfield Road northbound to allow yet more student accommodation to be built and forcing all the traffic up to the utter shitshow they have made of the Cameron Toll junction. You then have the absolute joke that they have made of Minto Street with the mindless traffic calming measures. Add to that the endless roadworks on Old Dalkeith Road and the absolute pointless money they have spent on average speed cameras on the same stretch. They just haven't a bloody clue and I would say that anyone who doesn't find Edinburgh a horrendous place to get around really isn't getting around much.

I don’t go to the east of the city much, I live in the west of the city, am regularly in the city centre and commute to the south of the city. Just pointing out that your experience isn’t universal - not denying the traffic and works is shit in places, just saying it’s not all of Edinburgh.

Ditto - I live in West of city and regularly go into town although I do try and avoid peak times. I used to work in both in town centre and out in West Lothian and found the trips annoying but its peak traffic in a capital city. Also nip down to East Lothian for golf regularly. I don't bother taking car into town, I just jump on a bus and chill. Bypass can be a bit of a pain at times but no different to most other cities I have tried to drive through/round when busy.

I think I would be pretty confident that my opinion is pretty much in the majority among anyone that has or does travel extensively throughout the city. The council have been pretty much fucking up the vehicular situation in and around the city for decades. Building a hospital with no parking is just another example of how short sighted they are.
The only thing going for it is the superb bus service but that has been vastly overshadowed by the disaster of the tram system.

I’d have to agree, the traffic management around works is almost always uniquely awful. Doesn’t help that even when there are no works the roads are generally in such a poor state of repair. Which I guess leads on to another point, I’d cycle a lot more if the roads were not so poor and full of holes, they are worse than any other town or city I know

I've never actually been to the Filmhouse - Lothian Road is ultimately a bit of a toilet - but sorry to say that's gone as well. Wonder how the Dominion is doing.

Their Aberdeen place, The Belmont is/was a cracking cinema. Great location and showed a mix of blockbusters, art house and classics etc

Hopefully it can be taken over and saved, there’s already a campaign set up. A great alternative to the usual faceless chain cinemas.

I'm being a bit facetious, places like the Hanging Bat are decent enough, but it's otherwise a busy, pretty grimy main road with a load of Byron Burgers on it.

I almost joined the Royal Marines in Lothian Road, after the interview both parties thought better of it as an idea.

It seemed to be a deal breaker for them that I didn't know why the RM have a green beret, for me it was, "fuck that for a game of soldiers", literally, after I got barked at for reading the exam paper whilst the guy in uniform was talking.

It definitely used to be worse, was a bit of a stabbing hotspot at one time, mainly due to Century 2000, or C2yacunt as it was colloquially known. Still not an area I rush too but definitely improved.

The Filmhouse used to do some great all nighters, I particularly remember a night they did showing all the Tarantino films, three at the time, one after the other starting at midnight.
