Maybe it was the flu vaccine we took prior to lockdown....who knows. The cold atm is more a concern.

Damn I feel for my animals. Especially the two lizards. They get so cold that they can't move. You literally have to move them under the heat lamps.
So let me get this straight, the cold and it's effect on your pet lizard is more of a concern than the deadliest pandemic in 100yrs?

That is fucked up
in a nutshell....dude....I couldn't be bothered to be caught up in the hype.
It's draining

Yes I do......I have been at it hammer and tongs since April....Escaped it completely.....dealing with people all the time. Especially whilst building the shop.....So if I am dubious about it there it is.....I still maintain the real damage is not in the deaths , but in the economic suicide over the hype.

Some positive news is that a Covid Tracking and Alert App has just been released on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store!

The more people participate the more effective it will be.

SHORT VERSION:
  • It creates an anonymous identifier for your phone.
  • Pings other phones that are running the app and records how long you have been within close proximity and keeps a log.
  • If someone else who runs the app tests postive and it's verified, all other users get an alert to be on the lookout for symptoms that you might be at risk.
Pretty cool piece of tech that uses the new APIs that Apple & Google developed in collaboration in order to remain effective as a tool, but respect and maintain user privacy.

It's just confirmation bias.
He is fishing for nuggets of information to validate his preconceived idea of what Covid is and does to try and justify his attitude and behavior towards the situation in general.
That is his coping mechanism, and unfortunately it will continue to be, until it hits him close to home.

Coming to this thread is depressing.

Ok we are all mostly used to the masks now so thats just becoming second nature....but to obsess over stats and apps....thats a different level of extreme. Focus on yourself.

I hardly obsess or stress about it boet.

I check the stats about once a week if even that, and I have some alerts set up for when interesting discoveries are made; such vaccine progress or the mutation that has been discovered in Indonesia that is more contagious, but less harmful/deadly (which is a very news), or some news understanding of how the virus works and what it does. Other than that I hardly think about it.

I just go about my business and adhere to 4 rules:
1. Treat everybody I come into contact with as if they are a carrier
2. Keep my distance whenever possible
3. Avoid crowds and crowded spaces whenever possible
4. Wash my hands regularly

Level 3 was frustrating, but right now my only real inconvenience is the lack of air travel, While it is allowed, I'll still not use it unless I absolutely have to.
And socials with friends, family and co-workers are smaller, outdoor affairs...where everybody takes precautions as much as possible without it being too inconvenient.

A new report from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that in 94 percent of the cases of those who died from COVID-19, another disease was also at work on the victim.

You are misunderstanding the report, or getting your news from a source that is intentionally or unintentionally misinterpreting the report.

If you suffer a stroke when driving your car, get into an accident and die...should your death be recorded in annual road fatality statistics? Or stroke victim numbers? Or both?
Would you have died if you didn't have the stroke? It's not so easy to unpack.

And even if you want to take that angle, of 94% of cases had an underlying condition of some kind; the reality is most of us have an underlying condition of some kind. Most of my relatives over 60 are either diabetic, hypertensive and/or obese; which puts them all at risk. We have a large population of HIV and TB sufferers. We are one of the world leaders in heart disease, and our cancer rates are up there.

And even if you are a perfect specimen of physical health, you could still end up like:
Nick Cordero. 41, fit...gets sick, cough gets worse and worse, you go to hospital, get diagnosed with pneumonia, your lungs get wrecked, you go onto a ventilator, blood clots require both your legs to get amputated and eventually you pass away anyway.

.Covid-19 in SA: 114 more deaths, 1 218 new infections and recovery rate hits 87%
By Sihle Mlambo Time of article published 57m ago

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced 114 more Covid-19 related deaths and 1 218 new infections, while he said the recovery rate was now 87%.

Johannesburg - Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced 114 more Covid-19 related deaths and 1 218 new infections on Monday night.

This takes South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll to 14 263, and infections to over 628 259.

South Africa has the sixth most Covid-19 infections in the world, behind only the USA, Brazil, India and Russia. Peru recently overtook South Africa to become the country with the fifth most infections in the world.

Although the number of new infections has slowed considerably, as has the rate of testing in the past week, daily deaths are also starting to slow, although they are still over 100 per day.

The Department of Health said it had now tested over 3.7 million people in the private and public sector, with over 11 600 tests conducted in the past 24 hours.

South Africa’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 14 263.

The Western Cape still has the most deaths, with 3913, Gauteng with 3631 , Eastern Cape with 2903 and KZN, with 2152, have the most fatalities in the country.

Of the latest 114 deaths, Mkhize said the most deaths came from the Gauteng, Western Cape and North West provinces.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers that treated the deceased patients. Our recoveries now stand at 549 993 which translates to a recovery rate of 87%.

Deaths today:

ADVERTISING

Gauteng - 39

Western Cape - 20

North West - 18

KZN - 13

Mpumalanga - 10

Eastern Cape - 7

Free State - 7

“This brings the cumulative total of reported Covid-19 related deaths to 14 263,” said the minister.

“We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased.

“Our recoveries now stand at 549 993 which translates to a recovery rate of 87%,” said Mkhize.

This week, Wits University vaccinologist Professor Shabir Madhi said community transmissions were slowing and that the positivity rate had almost halved between level 5 and level 2, going from 27% to 15% currently.

Madhi said they expected further decreases in the next few weeks, but stressed it was not the time for Covid-19 complacency.

Precisely

Hardly any of those 94% who had co-morbidity would have died if they had not contract the Covid virus. It is bloody depressing to think there are adults among us who want to downplay this pandemic

There are people who have lost most of their families to this virus, all way too early too, but yeah go ahead and shift the goalposts Sards

Bold statement....

And lets not factor in economic distress , stress related deaths because of Covid kak , and unemployment....

And definitely do not factor in the cost to the economy.....

A 4 week lockdown should have been enough.....

It really amuses me how different levels of awareness affect perspective....

Ok...a lot of lives were lost...herd immunity is taking place so its pretty much bringing itself to its own end.....

The cost to the economies , and social welfare is going to be felt for a decade at least....millions of people will lose their sources of income and families are going to suffer for years under the burden of debt. ... tax bases are shrinking as contributors do not contribute. ..there is a culture of barter developing which bypasses all taxes... which impacts on social grants...Dude....factor in all these social dilemmas and you will understand that the " pandemic " overreaction will have a far more devistating affect on the lives of people than the actual deaths.

5 week hard lockdown was a 1-time emergency measure. Without it we would have had a runaway train. We don't have the luxury of using it again and will be paying for its use for generations to come. The shenannigans that went on with the Level 4, Level 3.5, Level 3 and now Level 2 bullshit I kinda, sorta agree with you in some cases. The regulations were badly conceved and implemented.

It really amuses me how different levels of awareness affect perspective....

Ok...a lot of lives were lost...herd immunity is taking place so its pretty much bringing itself to its own end.....
And this is where we differ. It's not coming to an end and likely never will. Covid is now endemic in humans. Just like we were never able to completely eradicate the flu, this is now a disease that will be with us indefinitely. Immunity seems to be temporary as a number of people have been reinfected after only 3-4 months because they thought they were immune. The challenge for all of us is to adapt and find a risk/reward balance in our daily lives. This monster isn't going anywhere and it is very contagious.

Don't disagree with that, but your camp fails to account for the economic cost of a country permanently losing 10% of its workforce...especially older, more experienced people in the 50-60 year age range. Add to that chronic absenteeism, with employees having to go into quarentine on and off for years, and the pressure on medical and social welfare systems. We thought we had a problem with child-headed households during the AIDS crisis...how many kids do you think stay with grandparents in this country while the parents are working in cities or mines?

I am too polite to bother articulating an informed response to a vertically challenged intellectual zombie with a robust gastric region and a sandy vagina undergoing menses.

I guess we will never know how many deaths there could have been without a lockdown, but if you look at countries like Sweden that did not have a lockdown, you can possibly assume it could have been a lot higher, and Sweden do not have any dense populated areas like we have in South Africa or as many people with underlying diseases like HIV, etc.

The whole retrovirals angle is difficult to say, but taking into account that SA have a pretty low mortality rate per 100k people. Retrovirals might have some kind of an effect, maybe even the BCG vaccine regime we have over here could have an effect in reducing the mortality rate itself. The studies on the effect of these things are ongoing, so we might only know in years to come how these difference variables or combinations of it had an affect in our population. Before the outbreak reached Africa everyone was so worried on the effect of COVID on the HIV positive populations in Africa, so maybe retrovirals do play a bigger role than we think.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told MPs on Wednesday that the country has passed the Covid-19 storm as fewer cases are being reported.

Cape Town - Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has defended the lockdown in Parliament saying it was the correct decision to take to prevent more deaths in the country due to Covid-19.

He told MPs on Wednesday that the country has, however, passed the Covid-19 storm with fewer cases reported.

Mkhize said with the surge over they will continue to open the economy.

He said the opening of the economy was not about big business, but the people who are the backbone of the economy.

He also said there were more than 240 health workers who have died of Covid-19 and more than 31 000 infected were with the virus.

Asked by DA MP Lindy Wilson in delaying to open the economy, Mkhize said it was in the best interest of the country to implement the hard lockdown to prevent the deaths of more people.

"At the time if we did not do the lockdown, South Africa would be worse than it is today. The reality is that we have done the best in the situation. You must stop politicisjng the matter. Yes, we must rebuild the economy," said Mkhize.

"When we opened the economy it was not about the big business, it was about the people who are the backbone of the economy," said Mkhize.

Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu also told MPs that they have received eight million applications for the R350 unemployment grant and processed five million of these applications.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has been processing the applications for unemployed people electronically.

"When you look at the eight million people who applied and five million who have been paid there has been a small number who have penetrated the system," said Zulu.

She said they were dealing with those who were not supposed to get the R350 grant or double dipping.

Scientists are starting to try and figure out why Africa has gotten off so lightly:

TL; DR
But the South African scientists wondered whether, because those viruses spread more effectively in overcrowded neighbourhoods, poorer communities might have been more widely exposed and therefore, enjoy a larger degree of immunity towards Covid-19.

That seems implausible to me.

India has similar or worse overcrowding and it's not as if they have been left unscathed.
