I wouldn't say it was a myth. It's not the entire cause, far more to it than that, but there was elements of truth to it, accompanied by poor distribution of ammo on the whole.

I thought it was that Smith Dorrien got it wrong in his account and then Morris repeated it in The Washing of the Spears. The main causes were the line being too exposed so that when Durnford (who did run out of ammunition, on account of having gone out too far to reconnoitre) was overrun and the NNC folded, which exposed the right flank so that G Company was overwhelmed. After that they tried pulling back to the camp, but by that point the Zulu right horn had got round the back and they were wiped out piecemeal.

Yeah, the lines being too exposed and widely spread was the main thing but there were accounts that unopened ammunition boxes were carried out to the lines without screwdrivers. Whilst they were able to get them open by brute force it certainly interrupted and slowed their rate of fire.

Ah fair enough. The Academy is one of the few schools now that still has a rifle range (next to the sports hall). Probably the reason the army division of CCF is so popular…

I went to Morrison's and just assumed they still had a range. But the range was part of the swimming pool / gym (we did not havs sports halls in those days) complex. That has all been redeveloped.

There were about 900 pupils when I was there, about 500 now so it may not have been worth retaining the range although the cadets seem popular.
