Though worrying by how much the scrum fell apart after the starting front row went off.

Ulster - very much so
Currently 2nd , but only 1 point ahead of the Stormers . If Ulster win with a try bonus point , then they take 2nd no matter what Stormers do ( Stormers are at home against Benneton for their final game.)
Being 2nd in the league , as far as I am aware would mean that Ulster would not meet Leinster until the final , which is a pretty decent incentive

Ollie Leatherbarrow, who was outstanding for the U20s in 2022, has signed for Newcastle (from Exeter). A big abrasive number 8. If he gets gametime he is like nothing we currently have in our squad IMO.

I may be misremembering but for the u20s I thought he was exactly like Muncaster. Slightly smaller 8 who is pretty ferocious in contact.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2023 11:22 am Ollie Leatherbarrow, who was outstanding for the U20s in 2022, has signed for Newcastle (from Exeter). Is he committed to Scotland? Obviously not capped, but in spirit?KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2023 11:22 am Ollie Leatherbarrow, who was outstanding for the U20s in 2022, has signed for Newcastle (from Exeter). All the money you made will never buy back your soul
I read that. I hope multiple head knocks don't scupper that ambition.
A fine player who at one point was close to best in the world.

"Retiring in November" means "I want to go to the RWC". Not sure that's likely, but he's been an excellent international.
It would be daft to close the door on that at this late stage by him or the SRU. I don't think there is a huge amount between Brown, Cherry and Rambo and given the potential for injury he's probably been asked to at worst be available as an injury back up.

They're also saying that's when his contract runs out, so he got his last contract extension with the RWC in mind. Turner is first choice, I'd definitely take Ashman, that leaves one out of Brown, McInally and Cherry. Who knows, injury strikes and all of a sudden Mcinally is starting hooker against SA.Big D wrote: ↑Wed Apr 19, 2023 3:27 pmIt would be daft to close the door on that at this late stage by him or the SRU. Jamie Dobie extends his contract at Glasgow Warriors
Another good bit of business signed ,sealed and delievred
I've absolutely loved the four years I've spent here so far," Dobie told glasgowwarriors.org upon his re-signing.
"We've grown a lot and this season we've shown the benefits of the work we've put in over the last few months. We want to do something special as a group not only this season, but every season, and that's something I want to be a part of.
"I'm really pleased with how my personal game is progressing; the coaching team here is fantastic to work with, and we've got a great group of players that really challenges each other and drives standards higher.
"Playing at the weekend is what we all want to be doing, and this season I've been really pleased with the game time I've had. I've been involved in some big fixtures and really enjoyed getting stuck in for this team, and that feeling when you win games like that is unbeatable. That's what everyone plays for.
"Being out there with good friends and playing good rugby is what it's all about, and hopefully we can give the Warrior Nation plenty to cheer about over the next few weeks."
Wonder if Ali Price might move on - rekindle a Bromace at Bath perhaps

It is a bit depressing that a player seen as a bright prospect is "really pleased" with the game time he has had when it is five starts and 6 off the bench in his favoured position. We are hamstrung across both pro teams but when the likes of Boyle and Dobie who aren't miles apart in age getting 8 starts (not counting Dobie's emergency wing cameos) something needs to be done.

Ulster have more wins than the Stormers so as long as Ulster win they guarantee 2nd as wins is the first differentiator for teams finishing with equal points, don't need a BP. Albeit Ulster only have 2 wins without a BP in the league this season.Dogbert wrote: ↑Mon Apr 17, 2023 10:18 pmUlster - very much so

Glasgow Team for Connaucht
A mixture of what you you expect of what could be considered Glasgow's strongest team , and those knocking on the door
Its a strong pack , ans a decent bench
Jamie Dobie on the wing ( still 51 caps for a 21 year old isn't too shabby ) hopefully Seb is not too far away from coming back from injury.
Looks like gentle drizzle for the match , as long as it's not the monsoon conditions we had against the Scarlets , everyone will be happy
Looks like Oillie Smith is being wrapped in cotton wool
15 Huw Jones
14 Jamie Dobie
13 Stafford McDowall (Captain)
12 Sam Johnson
11 Cole Forbes
10 Tom Jordan
9 Ali Price

He's doing Exeter a good turn rather than seeing out his contract (think he had a year left). Will help their finances

Byron McGuigan has announced his retirement and will join the Sale Sharks coaching staff after the season.
He earlier announced he'd make himself available for the Namibia RWC squad - not sure if that's still happening.

I am decreasingly convinced by the strength of this argument. We don’t have enough shirts available for promising young players to get enough game time. The only way that’s going to improve is to have another pro team. Financial constraints aside, the main argument against this would be that our player pool would be spread more thinly - but I think maybe it actually needs to be. Would either of the current two pro teams be significantly weakened by losing some of their fringe players?Dogbert wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 7:48 pmMaybe two moderately successful pro teams might be a more achievable targetYr Alban wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 6:14 pmYou'd think we needed a third pro team...Big D wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 8:48 am

Caught up with the Super6 games last night, impressed with speed and the intensity the 'A' teams brought and how well the other teams adapted. I think if that filters into the Super6 comp it an only be a good thing in he long term and make the step up to pro level easier for those with the potential, it also gets the fringe pros some necessary additional game time and maybe gives some the kick up the @rse some of them need.

I am surprised to see that.
I just do not understand what is happening with him. He does not get much game time, but gets kept on. Having said that, I think he should be getting more game time. He has spoilt a few performances with daft errors, but to me it looks like he just needs a run of games to sort that out and get a better understanding of what refs will / will not allow.
It's a shame Edinburgh has not had a decent SH on the coaching ticket for a wahile.

Speaking of Edinburgh coaches, anyone any thoughts on who might be next in the Ejection seat? I'm hoping it's not Steve Diamond as it was pointedly called a consultancy when he started.
If this goes badly and I make a crater, I want it named after me!
