There's also a big drop-off between Boffelli and the young lads behind him at 15. I'd still imagine Kinghorn playing there more than either of Paterson or Sweeney.

After almost 100 pro games at fullback I think Kinghorn probably doesn't actually need to be playing there week in week out to remain in consideration for Toony.

They were, but Toony has obviously decided he wants him in the back 3.

At fear of going over very old ground, the guy is a stunning player in many positions but has too many flaws in all of them to be a first pick for the national team in any of them. IMO, of course.

I do love him coming off the bench though

I'm not going to get too uptight about where Kinghorn is listed, I'd want him in my side and there are going to be many opportunities for him, Healy and Savala to play ten over the coming years. New Zealand and Australia don't get hung up on the number on the jersey as much as we do.

I thought Healy looked pretty good for the time he was fit last weekend.

I can't help but think we might be missing an opportunity if Sam Johnson is being let go from Glasgow, he doesn't have to be better than Tuipulotu, he needs to be better than Dean, Lang and, at time of writing, Cammy Scott.
Dean is our best inside centre when he's on song, but Johnson has proved himself at international level.


I'd like to see Healy at 10, Kinghorn at 12, Currie at 13, Duhan at 11, just for height of them

Not really surprises on Darge being on the bench - Vailanu has been a real wrecking ball this year , and I'm sure Darge will get a decent spell in the second half

So, to sum up Glasgow’s season, pretty good until it came down to the games that really mattered, and then it went to pieces a bit. That could really be said of all Scottish sides recently. Hopefully they learn from this, but disappointing.

Before Munsters first win in the HEC they brought in a few Irish Sportsmen who'd experience of success, to pick their brains, & try & improve the mentality of the Province & the squad, after a number of nearlys; I think the Scottish team could do something similar.

Munster brought in Roy Keane, who stressed driving standards of everyone, & calling other players out who weren't fully committed; & then there was Harrington, probably the polar opposite of Keano in personality, but also looking for perfection, but who'd been 2nd on like 20+ occasions before he got his first PGA win, & stressed the learning from every failure, & incrementally moving forward, & mentally becoming stronger from every time he got close, but was that 1% behind the winner.

Glasgow are better than they showed this evening, but the Scottish teams have it in them to get themselves into more Semis & Finals over the next few years. They can take advantage of the issues down South, & strengthen their sides.

I liked that thing I heard about Roy Keane, he said to be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late and to be late is fucking unacceptable. It just cuts straight to the heart of what professional athletes should be about in terms of preparation.
We've lacked that in Scotland, we've had players come in from New Zealand Super Rugby and be gobsmacked that there isn't a full time coach for the mental preparations, we've had coaches come in an be slacked-jawed that we don't have a throwing coach for the hookers, in many ways we are still learning how to be professional, but things are improving, slowly.

I think Scotland have had Chris Hoy in, along with a couple of others. If our players had the drive of Andy Murray we'd get somewhere, too many have accepted mediocrity as the norm, many of our fans talk our players up, but there aren't many other teams saying "I wish he played for us" - none of our pack makes it into a Team of the 6N, Watson was knocking on the door pre-Lions but that's about it.

When it came to brass tacks, Glasgow were undone by a hard-bitten Munster performance and a Toulon pack which, in all honesty, man for man, they should have beaten, but didn't. The two hard bastards, Wilson and Harley, have left.
Edinburgh always under-deliver for the squad that is there, there is a very soft underbelly that only takes a little tickle and the whole team unravels.

Our players need to be able to execute under the hottest, most keenly fought parts of the game. I'm not a pro sports coach so I don't know how you get players to kick on from where they are, but the GB cycling approach was many tiny improvements, Woodward was all about the top two inches, TCUP etc. I think we have two teams with the potential to compete at the sharp end of the season, but not as things stand, not until we stop making error upon error when our systems get stressed.

Agree with all that. I did say that it was probably a year too early for Glasgow and yes it is very much about the mental side now, it has to come from the individual with guidance from the coaches and it has to start way before they become pro. You need the determination to push yourself to become the best you can be, raw natural talent only goes so far and in the end a journeyman with the right attitude will kick their @rse in the end.

To be fair, Glasgow were more undone by the red card v Munster than by the Munster performance. Still self inflicted though. And the ban affected the team for the final.

Scotland has adjusted to the pro game incredibly poorly, which led to a long period of losing serially at Test and Euro level, which led to a generation of players who simply didn’t back themselves at that level. It is improving, slowly, but we still have a whole lot of catching up to do.

PS: I have to admit a great deal of schadenfreude at the fact that Leinster, who are supposed to be the ultra-pros who are far too good for everyone else and have all of this stuff down, have choked twice in big games in the space of a week and totally blown their season.

They are looking less invincible than they were. The bottom line is that Scotland were able to contain them in our 6N game for about 50 minutes. We just need to do that for 80 (big ask I know).

Easy there ER2. This is just the usual glimmer-of-hope phase us Scots go through at this point in the RWC cycle. The fertile part of our cycle, so to speak, where we spawn unlikely scenarios of glory like a frog in spring. We'll still bleed when it matters, as always.
