The best new and returning TV series thread
Atlanta is the best anthology show I've watched in the past 10 years. There's a strong story arc and central characters throughout all four seasons, but many of the episodes can also be enjoyed as their own short story. And of course, there's the relentless sly humour. Fantastic show.
See, I’m the opposite. I’d not heard of it, and watched it, and like it.EnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 9:23 am Silo is pretty average thus far. Think I expected too much as heard the design et al was amazing. Its just fine. I think it's getting that positive discrimination of having strong female leads. However I can only guess they have seen more episodes than us as to call it 'thrilling' and 'era defining' is not what I have seen
Started Invasion again and have to say totally into it. Love the pace and mystery to it which I hear is what annoyed a few people.
So I started from zero expectations
I generally avoid cop shows like the plague, because their inaccuracies are so bloody annoying, but I thought it was very good.

On the Spy theme, I'd highly recommend The Sandbaggers they made a few series, & it's lot more like LeCarre than Fleming, showing the gritty side.FalseBayFC wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2023 6:53 pm The wrong place to post this but just watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) with Alec Guiness. What a show! Are there any any other mini-series from the same era?
1990 had the tag line, "Nineteen Eight Four plus Six"", & it has a brilliant cast, & like TTSS you can tell they pushed the boat out with the budget ....

Yep IIRC they filmed in parts of Leeds as a location for the grim parts of Eastern Bloc cities [ edit - i meant this with regard to The Sandbaggers, made by Yorkshire TV ]fishfoodie wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 5:04 pmOn the Spy theme, I'd highly recommend The Sandbaggers they made a few series, & it's lot more like LeCarre than Fleming, showing the gritty side.FalseBayFC wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2023 6:53 pm The wrong place to post this but just watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) with Alec Guiness. It is a great show, it has great humor as well as thrill and mystery and it delivers until the finale... can't wait for season 2, but probably only due beginning of next yearEnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Wed May 10, 2023 10:17 pm Severence is very good indeed. I am fairly clueless as to what is going on three episodes in but the vibe is great. Yes. The vibe. It's all a bit weird and mysterious but the acting and direction are nailed on good

Loving The Diplomat - fast paced and funny.
So, I looked this up when you mentioned it and the best ad for it was 'it's only 5 episodes so you don't have long enough to get too mad at it'. I gave it a go as a result and I can both see why you enjoyed it and why it might have picked up poor ratings. It's essentially a long ad for climate change activists with a bit of drama thrown in. It's fine but it's still really preachy. Aimed at both 40+ year olds trying to guilt them into making more of an effort and younger folk trying to get them to become more active in the cause.
And look, the premise might actually be valid. History will tell!
I started late after rejecting it at first... watched it all now. It is indeed a skill to make a show compelling when all the main characters are so despicable. The sad thing is that it's entirely believable..EnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 9:40 am Way behind the curve but started Succession a few weeks back and am.on season 2. It's utterly compelling and fairly funny. Pretty skilled to make a show where every character is pretty repulsive and yet it remains humorous and you have 'favourites '. Tall dwarf favourites of course

More important than Succession, Justified is coming back!
News that brings with it a mixture of joy and concern. It was a such a good show you can't help but worry that the revival won't be any good, may even be bad enough to tarnish what came before.

I like Gerri...EnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 8:48 pm I like Tom. I read some psychologist say he is one of the most loathsome characters as he doesn't have the trauma associated with his dickness. Meh. I quite like him

It's a toss up between him and Greg. The Roy children were brought up into an environment of complete, borderline pyschopathic dysfunction, those actively choose to be a part of it.EnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 8:48 pm I like Tom. I tried to watch Ted Lasso, it’s very light hearted. But it’s just so lame. The main character is really annoying, as is his assistant coach.
The only characters worth watching it for (a little bit) are the old boy Roy Kent, and the Jamie Tartt character.

Got me thinking.
Clearly on this thread there are different “tastes”, some posters are matches, some are not.
I ask each of you to submit a top tv series list of this millennium. And a bottom list of those highly rated, but which you “controversially” don’t like.
Max of 10 in the top list, and 5 in the bottom list.
You may edit your list multiple times as you see ones from others you forgot.

I found the first series quite fun, albeit quite saccharine and edgeless. The second ramped that up to an unbearable degree and I haven't watched the third.
Third is good, we found the 2nd a bit too daft. Really enjoying it.sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 9:02 amI found the first series quite fun, albeit quite saccharine and edgeless. The second ramped that up to an unbearable degree and I haven't watched the third.

The best, in no particular order
Fargo (I've only seen the first two series but they were excellent)
The Wire
Sopranos
Band of Brothers
Frasier - not entirely sure about including this, but it was a must watch at a particular time, when Friday Nights were for staying in because the nippers were wee.
ER - see above for midweek evenings
Game of Thrones (House of the Dragon was better than the latter series of GoT I thought)
I may destroy you
Atlanta - just brilliant, quirky and funny
Feabag
Slow Horses
Started off good but went a bit stale
Orange is the New Black
Six feet under
Lost
The Americans
West Wing - started off good, if a bit earnest, then went all runny after Sorkin left the team, then got good/ok again when Jimmy Smits joined
Sons of Anarchy
Haven't seen
Squid Game
Deadwood
Veep
Succession
Madmen - for some reason the smoking put me off after a couple of episodes
Bad -
The Office

Top:
Band of Brothers
Firefly
The Thick Of It
What We Do In The Shadows
Taskmaster
The Wire (first 4 seasons)
The Daily Show (w/ Jon Stewart)
Slow Horses
West Wing
BrainDead
Justified
Pretty much every BBC nature doc.
Black Sails
Southland
Andor
Love, Death & Robots
The Kirlian Frequency
Veep
Daredevil
Kingdom (Korean zombie show, not one of the many other Kingdoms)
Brand New Cherry Flavour
I tend to forget about the things I find disappointing, I'm sure other's lists will prompt plenty of 'Oh yeah, that was crapper than people told me it'd be', but:
Breaking Bad (didn't make it to the end of seaosn 1)
Mike Flanagan's everything (Haunting Of Hill House, Bly Manor, Midnight Mass) which is a shame because his films are generally pretty good.
Walking Dead (plus sundry spin offs)
Stranger Things
Deadwood
Pretty much any serious crime drama that revolves around a troubled homicide detective.

Suffer from not very good memory so have to do a selective list of things that most quickly come to mind - all IMO of course
The Best ( with caveat that they are not always consistently excellent but can rewatch many times )
The WIre
Battlestar Galactica Re-imagining
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Ripper Street
Firefly
Borgen
Game of Thrones ( obviously declined late on...)
Rome
Chernobyl
Farscape
Good to watch once but not necessarily to go back to
Sherlock
Bosch
Peaky Blinders
Spiral aka Engrenages
Sopranos
Broadchurch
Fargo
Breaking Bad
The West Wing
The Thick of It
Generation Kill
True Detectives S1 & 3 (NOT 2!)
OK stuff to fill in an empty schedule
House
The Good Wife
Halt and Catch Fire
The Walking Dead up about season 5
Endeavour
Gomorroh
Stuff highly rated/talked about that I could never get into
Mad Men
Mr Robot
Lost
24
The Office

I'm reserving judgement on 'Succession' until I see the final episode, but have enjoyed it greatly so far and if the finale nails it then it might well join my 'Best' list

Season 3 was a good recovery after the shitshow of the second
