Nottingham incident with added London stabbage

GBNews claim to have - possibly leaked - info about the suspect that hasn't yet officially been released and has predictably got their audience frothing with fury. Other channels prefer to wait for facts to be released though, while the investigation continues.

Some tragedies always hit home a little more than others.
Both the uni students were talented sportsmen/women. A cricket playing young lad on his way home with a girl from the hockey club could describe half the blokes I play with every Saturday, and me and my own mates a few years ago. The last time I was on that road I'd gone to visit a mate at Notts Uni for Super Saturday 2016. We decided we needed to settle some pre-match nerves and went to chuck a ball around on Lenton Rec, attempting cross kicks from one side of the road to the other on the way. That was probably about their last planned night out at uni before heading back to their families for the summer. Just all feels a bit more personal.
A part of a city that's synonymous with the best times of their life for a lot of people who studied there, and should have been theirs as well. Taken in the absolute prime of life. Absolutely fucking senseless. God knows how the families carry on.

the suspect being held in Nottingham is originally from West Africa.
He also:
Did not have a criminal record
Was not known to security services
Had been in the UK for many years
Was not a British citizen
Was a resident in the UK
Had settled status, i.e. he had permission to stay for several years
according to the BBC
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
It’s getting more unusual
The first photo of a suspect in the Nottingham killings has emerged, as he tried to break into a homeless hostel.

The man can be seen arriving at Seely Hirst House on Mapperley Road in Nottingham at about 4am.
A CCTV still shows him trying to climb in an open window of the hostel after students Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar, both aged 19, had been killed nearby.
A resident of the hostel woke up and punched him, which sent him falling backwards, Sky News reported.

Even Braverman, as horrific a person as she appears, kept her PMQ response to sympathizing with the victims today.

Such a senseless waste. Unfathomable what needs to happen for anyone to want to do that.

I'm working on the general assumption that this is a psychotic episode, from someone who was, "in the system", but the system isn't setup to manage all the people who need it.
The dismantling of older, & inhumane psychiatric care system, & replacing it with, "care in the community", condemns us this type of incident, until some middle ground between detention, & voluntary self-medication is found. It's not a situation unique to the UK, we had one recently in Ireland, & I've seen signs of them in Canada, Oz, & NZ, & all look like horrible incidents where, say in the early 60s, these people would have in institutionalized in their 20s, when they started exhibiting troubling signs, & never would have seen the light of day again.
It’s such a worry that nutters like this are about walking freely, when you’ve children growing up in this country.
I’d really like to know a bit more history about this individual, and how they came to end up like this.
What can be done to prevent this type of individual?
I’m taking a guess by saying it’s not a cultural or religious induced attack. More like extreme mental health condition (unless drugs).

Yeah I think this is pretty spot on. It’s part of a balance of competing rights, and not sure we’ve got the balance right when we have people out there who we are/should be aware of murdering two kids with their lives ahead of them and a bloke who sounds like just cared for his community, brutally and in cold blood.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 6:15 pmYeah, it's grim.Insane_Homer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 5:43 pm Such a senseless waste. But the truth is politicians are content with not rocking the boat, the news cycle will move on, and in a year there’ll be another similar incident and more good lives ruined by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

There's nothing you can do. Unless he's previously been violent and has a diagnosable condition so you can lock him in a hospital or someone has raised a safeguarding on his behalf at risk of harm for others.Ymx wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 7:12 pm It’s such a worry that nutters like this are about walking freely, when you’ve children growing up in this country.

The issues you have with serious mental health is: the NHS mental health services are overwhelmed, social care is at breaking point too and barely functions, mental health charities can't deal with serious mental health problems it has to be fairly bad anxiety or depression, and then the police can't spend all their time looking after them as they don't have the time resources or training (see the met refusing to answer mental health calls now as it takes up 40% of their time per year)
I volunteer for a national mental health charity in frontline services and if someone is in serious distress you phone the police but their response is quite poor as they're stretched. Also we've had incidences of our staff being unsafe and again the police basically refuse to arrest people in crisis because they don't want to deal with it because they have no way of calming them down apart from locking them in a cell for 24 hours which would require constant surveillance so they don't off themselves. Also the usual characters the police do know quite well and presumably get numb to the same people saying the same things and never acting until they do act.
Feel sorry for the police as they are in an almost impossible position when you have unstable people.

First off, good on you for volunteering with the mental health charity, I helped one person who was going through a very bad time for about six years and it drained me.
I remember a good few years ago, and echoing what fishfoodie wrote, there was a report from one the charities specialising in schizophrenia that said a huge proportion of rough sleepers would previously have been institutionalised, but had become homeless as a result of Care in the Community.
Mental health services are actually pretty good in England up to the age of 18, then the service falls off a cliff, they really are struggling. My eldest is doing a PhD in an area regarding the efficacy of mental health care and where the care is given the results are good, but the availability and lengthy waiting times are often the problem.

Well this doesn't quite seem to meet the "murderous migrants on boats" scenario that some elements might have been expecting - all assuming he's the culprit. Doesn't condone the act in the slightest if he is guilty, but maybe a little more to this than met the eye at first with no confirmation yet of the "violent history" that was stated in the first tweets by GBNews
The man arrested on suspicion of murdering Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates in Nottingham has been named as Valdo Amissão Mendes Calocane.
He graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of Nottingham in 2022.
The dual Guinea-Bissau/Portuguese national had settled status in the UK through his Portuguese citizenship.

Nope, I'm trying to suggest that news outlets trying to jump the gun with a "scoop" from sources that are unattributed for questionable reasons isn't how they should be operating. There is a reason that Criminal Investigations hold things back for various good reasons and that news outlets should wait for information to be released and corroborated through public briefings.
The dignity of the bereaved and the reaction of those who have offered condolences and attended vigils etc deserves better.

I’d say with the current atmosphere, it would be imperative to get clarity out there ASAP. Twitter will always project, in absence of clarity from authorities. News agencies or individuals with an agenda will always speculate to fit their agenda. Especially where there is concern there could be multiple future events eg terrorist attacks.tabascoboy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2023 4:35 pm Nope, I'm trying to suggest that news outlets trying to jump the gun with a "scoop" from sources that are unattributed for questionable reasons isn't how they should be operating. Have we yet had clarity on the trigger for the attack?

He’s completely transformed the crime scene, has overseen a steady increase in annual knife crime, and successfully overseen the highest number of stabbings ever in a year! 14,700 in a year !!!!
If lockdowns hadn’t slowed his progress, who knows what he might have accomplished.
Hats off to Genghis !
