£113K?

I'd be looking here if I had that sort of money to spend on a car - you don't waste the old car, you don't have the carbon footprint of a new build and you get better performance than with a petrol vehicle

Saw a Bentley SUV earlier in the week. Cross between a hearse and a tractor from a tank transporter and ugly as sin!! Took up one and a half parking bays as well.

Saw one about 15 minutes ago!
Know what you mean. The standard nod of approval to the old geezer driving it because its a Bentley, then a bit of recoil as you realise it looks a bit shit

Way to go FRance! Ban the fucking things.
More than 120 modern cars available to purchase on the UK market now overhang standard parking spaces, claiming ever more of our public space. These hulking vehicles were originally designed for off-road driving. And advertising campaigns featuring rugged terrains would have you believe this is how many are still being used. But in the UK, the overwhelming majority of drivers do not buy them to drive off-road: three-quarters of these vehicles end up polluting city streets, with a high proportion concentrated in the affluent west London borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

It's the trend for inverted snobbery. Particularly with electric cars where they have to be seen to be hipster whackily different.

It looks little bit like some of the customised vans you see in Japan, but not sure sure if they're really the best design cues for a luxury car.

The guy who runs the garage happened to be on tv the other night, they were doing a programme about EVs. The performance of the electric iterations of the classic cars is way better than the petrol versions - the only thing missing is the pollution, whether it's noise pollution or fuel exhaust poisons.

There is a YouTube channel of those cars, the Land Rover Defender that they converted worked far better off road than the diesel version.

Who gives a sh*t? The whole point of them being classics is the entirety of their character. You may as well paint over a Picasso with highlighter pen because it makes the picture easier to see. Frankly, it's vandalism but perpetuated by nobs who want to show they have enough money to trash expensive items (like the van Gogh buyer who stipulated it should be cremated with him). The only thing missing? Really? You mean other than the whole experience? :problem:

Re the Landie:
a) It's not a classic and so not relevant. And anyway, if you are stupid enough to pay that kind of money to convert one rather than buying a modern purpose built like, say, a Rivian, knock yourself out.
b) It won't "work far better off road than the diesel version" because often a core requirement for that kind of use is range and the capability to refuel. Ice Cold In Alex in an electric? They'd all have been dead long before reaching Alexandria.

I have. And it is. Although not quite as ugly as the Bentley.

My mother was Bill Wilson's PA when he owned Aston Martin. Both would be turning in their graves at the sight of these joke vehicles.

I bet you drive 500 miles non-stop, deliver a card to your granny, refuel and then drive 500 miles back to give granny's reply to the family.

If a classic car is rare, please don’t electrify it. If there are thousands - 911, Kombi, Defender, Mustang, Mini…..then go for it.

Yet more nonsense.

On the other hand, you might have a point, there are far fewer moving parts that can go wrong in an EV, and as far as I'm aware overheating isn't a problem, so breaking down in a classic car and waiting for a tow might also be missing. You'll miss spending months tinkering with the engine and gearbox, getting covered in oil and all manner of shit.

The Land Rovers he converts have a range of 200 miles, that will only get better as battery technology improves.

I say all of this as a former owner on 109 Series 3 Land Rover pick up which I used for work, I had to replace the crank shaft on it at one point and I'll take the EV version of it every day of the week, it handles off road terrain better, it delivers max torque at low revs, so carrying a full load of fence posts and wire plus tools up a steep slope for miles is a piece of piss.

But, oh for the romance of a noisy, boneshaking, polluting IC engine!

I'm not a fan, but to your second sentence, at least it looks different. Do they all look the same because of some 'optimal' space-allocating, mpg-saving air flow design?

I was at a car show on Sunday and it was refreshing to see some variety.

Eh? To whom or what are you addressing the bits in red?! Because they form no part of my discussion points. However, if your point is that classic vehicles have classic engines .......... well, no sh*t Sherlock. A police force near you has detective vacancies awaiting your insights. Might we keep classics and Landies/whatever separate (sorry inactionman)? Unless you are deliberately sidestepping the vandalism point. Your last line highlights your error (wanton or otherwise) in conflating the 2. I wonder if you really would countenance the idiocy of sticking Duracells into a Bentley Blower or Blue Train.

200 miles. Woohooo. And that will be on the flat in ideal temperature conditions. See, whilst classic cars might occasionally overheat, milk floats don't work terribly well in very cold conditions. Anyway, your example simply highlights the limited, but genuine, use set for EVs, one of which is yours. There is a reason disabled buggies and golf carts have been electric forever.

PS tinkering with the engine and gearbox, getting covered in oil and all manner of shit is part of the ownership experience of a classic.

I think it's fashion as much as anything - there is no way an SUV of any description is more aerodynamic than a modern low-slung car, if they were F1 cars would look like Land Rovers, which is basically a six foot wall being driven into the wind.

No, I dictate what I want to include in my points, not you, end of.

The guy who converts these vehicles includes campers, off road working vehicles and cars like Porches and pretty much anything that was made from 1950 to 1980, that is his stipulation, I'm not concerned enough to enquire as to why.

Yeah 200 miles, at the moment, the tech for the batteries is what has held back the development, in terms of the R&D put into batteries compared to IC technology, electric cars are still very much in their infancy

edit, to address the point about the old Bentleys, these are museum pieces not something you'd use on a daily basis - I wouldn't advocate electrifying a steam traction engine either.

There's certainly a lot of style and perception in car design -what a consumer expects of a vehicle - which drives the general shape of cars.

There are more practical reasons, some of which is related to airflow but also includes packaging (drivetrain, safety features etc), ergonomics (sitting, entering, loading etc), pedestrian safety (one of the things that ultimately killed the Defender), current state of art manufacturing (e.g. it's only relatively recently that we can consistent, sharp angles in body panels) There's only so many ways of addressing all this within a class or category, hence all tend to look pretty equivalent - especially when they've all got to meet identical and increasingly stringent regulation.

Manufacturers tend to try to separate on detail, e.g. the front end aesthetics of Audis, VWs, Skodas and SEATs are quite different even if the platform is in many cases the same.

Fine if you want to obfuscate and act like a tit. If you want a debate, try sticking to the subject.

Finally, comprehension.

PS "at the moment, the tech for the batteries is what has held back the development" completely ignores the insurmountable hurdles in much of the UK in respect of infrastructure. You can treble the battery range but it will serve no purpose if you cannot recharge it.

What the fuck is wrong with you? The point was conversion of old cars to electric, you don't like a particular point so you act like a wanker and start hurling insults around on a completely benign topic.

There was a time when lack of filling stations and range of a tank of petrol were issues.

Charging infrastructure is part of the "getting up to speed" for EVs to becoming a real alternative, but that is only part of the problem, the big problem is the availability of batteries for new cars in the coming years as we move away from petrol and diesel.

It's not inconceivable that petrol is going to be hard to find in a decade or so - especially any that has additives such as lead or are limited by ethanol content. EV charging points are only really going to increase in volume and capacity, although I do hold out some hope that hydrogen might be an increasingly viable option.

As an aside, I've idly wondered why manufacturers don't create replacements of old classics with modern running gear, even if in limited run. I'd love an electric Jag E-Type and my wife -for reasons that escape me - always wanted an old VW beetle. I recognise issues around e.g. 3rd level brake lights, airbags etc, wondering if you get exemptions for limited runs. A company in Brazil bought the patterns for the old Beetle, I'm not sure they're still going (it was a while ago and the machinery and dies etc were getting pretty worn) but they could have looked to swap the old air-cooled engine out for something better.

As "new" cars I reckon they would be subject to new car legislation, but an old one that had been converted wouldn't - though I wager the insurance companies would kick your arse.

I guess I have absolutely no chill - I kinda of like it.

But then I'm not a fan of low profile 'supercars'.....plus it has a big arse TV in the back.

I did a trade when I left school. As a confirmed rev head, I chose mechanics. I’m actually a qualified auto mechanic. I still get off on high revving engines, especially bikes….

But fuck that, Torq. I’m also a realist, I live in NZ with comparable weather and terrain to the UK and a smaller population at around 5 million. I bought a new EV and it kills the ICE alternatives. A dream of mine is a classic car retro modded with an EV drive train… because it just fucking makes sense.

To me it looks like a hatchback welded onto a skip, with an old fashioned range grafted on the front..

Like a 1972 Escort or Cortina Mk3 - or like a 50's classic?
