AE for me too. As for Willemse, I’d still start with Willie. It’s a bit ironic that Sards is complaining about Willemse defense, Willie is notorious for being iffy on that front.
Willie is poor under the high balls. That's why Willemse was selected on Friday. We lost the previous test against the All Blacks because Willie was nowhere to receive.

Plus Willemse stepping. He got that MOTM stepping the All Blacks drunk a few times.

Illie can only step in Karlien van Jaarsveld house.

The AB player ghosted Willemse to score the try. You cannot hide the fact that his missed tackle led to a try. So much for solid defense

Willemse knocked on the ball twice if I recall. From catching position. Not really an advert for fb over Willie

Too late now, but Moodie might have been a good option at fullback. Unfortunately they never tried him there. Back 3 of Mapimps, Kolbe and Moodie could be great.

No man.

Bonus points are going to be key to getting out of the group. If the Boks just win four matches and get no bonus points = 16 points. If another team wins 3 matches and gets the maximum bonus points = 17 points.

Looking at that and how to get out of the pool, not having strong place kicking starts making sense. We need to score tries. Then when there's an injury Pollard can come in for the knockouts if they qualify.

Much easier to attack with a Willie. Much easier to score with a Willie.

Wales and ABs show what the Boks can do if they get total dominance in the forwards.

Is your expectation the Boks go through the RWC like that? I mean that would be fucking awesome. But I'm more thinking "Le Roux has done impressive stuff in some very tough games".

He totally has, but that was in the past. We have evolved. I am thinking that he isn't needed any more as a dual playmaker with a creative guy like Manie at 10. With Pollard at 10, different story. Our backline worked really well lately with the young guns, I would keep the lineup as it is now.

Look, i dont really mind who plays. I just feel that we have evolved our game and guys have stepped up. I would continue with that and not revert to the same old.

For me it's just what happens when everything goes right in the forwards. The first 20-30 minutes of the match in NZ, the ABs had all the momentum and shows what happens if the Bok forwards don't get the job done. That match was still on the outer limit of being retrievable, but the Boks ran out of time.

Both the Bok v AB matches this year were quite extreme.

It's better to plan for the worst. I don't see much chance repeating the last two matches in RWC games against any decent side.

The previous match against the ABs Willie was at first receiver the majority of the match because Willemse couldn't keep up. It's all there to see. He is definitely not a 10. Willie is fantastic at fb.
It was disingenuous to give Willemse MOTM because it created the opinion that he is better than Willie when the truth is he us just as poor under the high ball and missed a tackle for a try. The difference is Willie links with the backline and Willemse tries his miracle one man show instead.

Willie for me easily.

That Said. Not else much I would change. Everything else was perfect. That AB try the only real abberation

Watching as a neutral, I certainly thought he was a bizarre pick for MOTM. I actually thought he was the poorest performing SA back.

Listen to oom.

My take:
NZ/France/Ireland/Scotland have the potential to beat the Boks. The other teams I don't think do. Of those four sides, France and the ABs are very much based around being physical athletes/momentum/counter attack, they both play in quite a similar way with an attack based around ball in hand play, the Boks can beat it if they prevent all the momentum starting at the set piece and hold in defence. Ireland I'm the most worried about, they have a strong kicking game in all aspects (from hand/chasing/catching) maybe some crossover from Gaelic football, this means they can generate momentum in a way that's hard to stop by kicking onto us, they can kick better than NZ and France can imo. When Rassie and Nienaber were coaching the Stomps they always struggled against sides which could kick deep onto them (because they played with the backline up in defence), that wasn't many sides in Super Rugby but those sides did beat them, the Stomps beat running sides with a poor kicking game which was most Super Rugby teams. If Scotland impose their game on us, which is short passing and offloads close in to runners then spreading the ball wide through miss passes/kick passes, then it can get very tough our wings aren't the biggest and Scotland's aim is to make 1 v 1 situations for their wings, the close in defence is crucial to stopping that if Scotland aren't making much ground with their lose in runners the defence can spread out more.

Let not forget about the Saffers in Scotland team. WP Nel is n ou hond. Schoeman and specially vd Merwe has been outstanding talents. Dunno much about Steyn. Huw Jones have a Saffer mentality after Dobson develop him into a special player.

Finn Russell has a world class kicking game. Whilst Hogg is gone, Kinghorn is very good at returns and Tuipolotu can poke as well, if Russell doesn't feel option is there for him.

For all that Scotland like to run, if Russell sees a rush defence or space for a kick/50:22 he will take it, especially chips.

Kicking game from Scotland may be even more prevalent if selected SA players start struggling on the kick returns. Russell and Kinghorn will beat Libbok, Willie and Kriel every day of the week in distance and accuracy department.

I think Le Roux's kicking game is being a bit underestimated on this thread. As in it's being totally ignored.

Can't say I'm that worried about Russell's kicking from hand unless Scotland are on the front foot and have momentum anyway. The Boks don't use the 13 in a semi-fullback sweeper role, far more likely the scrumhalf will be in that role. Du Preez was the best Bok scrumhalf at sweeping/return kicking on defence. Bok centres rarely kick because they're always in the line, all the other backline players kick more.

For me Scotland are a bit comparable to the Sharks when Rassie/Nienaber were at the Stomps. The Sharks didn't have a kicking game as strong as the Bulls and Saders, or a lineout stronger than the Stomps to really exploit the kicking. The Sharks didn't have no kicking game (Frans and Lambie were there), but the lineout stopped it being top tier. What the Sharks did have was a massively strong backrow (Deysel/Alberts/Marcell Coetzee/Botes/Keegan Daniel/Kankow and Pieter-Steph du Toit who was a lock for us), that meant if the Sharks were able to compete/blow the Stomps away at the breakdown and get momentum close in they could open up the Stomps and beat them.

The key against Scotland is the defence close in and the ruck, if the Boks stop that then Scotland have no momentum. I cannot see the Scots using a kicking game to generate momentum.

Wow. What a game. What a weekend. I've literally been glowing.

I don't get the gate for Willie. We've been down this road before. He's the first name on the team sheet for me, our key playmaker. Just look at his form the last 2 years, it's madness to discard that. He's the main reason we've been able to evolve our gameplan since 2019.

A whole lot of dog shit posting on here. The Boks will mash the Scots into a deep-fried mars bar and Willie will lick the sticky stuff of his talented digits.

He thinks Libbok's kicking has been fixed, and he's picked up on what I have about shutting down teams close in and preventing quick ruck ball.

Various anti-Bok pundits have decided we're cheats for the 7/1 bench split. I now support the use of an 8/0 bench split. No half measures, break out the launch codes, press the big red button.

Kwagga on the bench and Willemse starting can cover all the backline positions. Kolbe could go in at 9 in an emergency.

Could try and have three sets of frontrows in the 23.
