Austerity rather than stimulus is no small part of that. The economy's been dragging its heels ever since.tc27 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 1:48 pm I do think our political class do need to think why growth has being anemic for so long and we never seem to recover from the 2008 GFC unlike the US.
Truss is simply a moron though - she was warned about the pension FDI issue and that markets would short UK gilts in the government pressed ahead with unfunded tax cuts but pressed ahead anyway. She claims to be a heir to Thatcher but Thatcher's mission at least at the start was about building economic credibility. She was part of the consensus that insisted on the hardest form of Brexit putting another dampener (but not IMO the only or biggest one) on the UK economy
She is too stupid to know she should stay quiet.

Quite, in Tim Shipman's piece about Starmer in the Sunday Times he has an aid saying "you can't keep slicing up a pie, you have to build a kitchen".sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 2:08 pmAusterity rather than stimulus is no small part of that. Every system entails greed. Capitalism just better harnesses it than most others, arguably all others. But I wouldn't say capitalism prioritises profits by private individuals above all else, it would prioritise profits, it wouldn't care where the money was, it would want whatever creates the most more profit. That those in charge tend to skew the system means the version of capitalism one gets isn't rational, but any system will be skewed by those controlling the levers of power.JM2K6 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 9:58 am Capitalism is a system that essentially demands greed. Almost by definition - it's a system that ultimately prioritises profits by private individuals above all other considerations. Any attempts to discuss capitalism without accepting that as a fact is doomed to fail.
There's probably a fair point that my objection to the misuse of the word capitalism is besides the point because it's meaning is now so corrupted it's on a par with discussing Owen Farrell's tackle technique, when like capitalism like a tackle is a specific and defined thing onto which many have added much in the way of muddled thinking. And that so many are wrong in the use of capitalism as a concept then sort of means they're right because it's meeting the requirement of conveying meaning, just given the muddled thinking on what a thing is perhaps adds to some muddled thinking on what the problems are and how to address them.
I have though dug out my old copy of Max Weber's essay on Capitalism, and when I finish my current book I'll return to something I probably haven't read in over 20 years, I read it during A-levels and then again first year at Uni. if nothing else it'll get nicely in the way of my failing attempts to improve in German and Polish

Guilty as charged.....
I usually come back within 3 years, but it's been 6.
It's very apparent that things are shit - we have lots of problems of varying levels in Oz, but it's very evident how depressed the UK is at present.
Hopefully, by the time I come back again, it'll have perked up a bit
I happened across her speech on telly and sat mesmerised listening to it. She is full on loopy batshit crazy and was even worse in the Q&A after when she had to answer questions without a preprepared script. Apart from 'it was the woke left wing establishment that did me' in line we also had bring in fracking, dump all our green policies cause global warming aint a thing, deregulate almost everything, and all sorts of other soundbites without any real explanation. She really has become the mouthpiece of the radical right wing nut jobs and looks happy enough to take whatever they are offering to spout their nonsense. However she is also as thick as a pound of mince, like a rabbit in the headlights when speaking and has the charisma of one of my bunions. She did however manage to trash the last 13 years of Tory Government and took a number of side swipes at Sunak which was mildly amusing. For the Tory Party to ever think she was good enough to be an MP let alone PM is just astonishing and shows how they have been captured by the far right, Farage was in the audience, and dodgy dark money. It was all strangely hypnotic and amusing in a very scary way.sturginho wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 1:56 pm...they feed beefburgers to cowstabascoboy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 11:36 amYou'd kind of hope that people have enough sense to vote such a moron out at the next election, but, Norfolk...

Sunak decides Net Zero is a bad idea, presumably because the wingnuts in his Party are thinking about Ruislip, and he's had his orders from the wife's portfolio and the usual suspects.
At this stage, the collection of barrel dregs that constitutes what can laughably be referred to as the Government (not much actual governing going on) are engaged in one or more of the following at any given time:-
Red meat via culture wars and random policy announcements with zero thought to the consequences or optics outside the hardcore monkey wearing a blue rosette voters
Tufton Street cut 'n' paste
Chasing the fringe to try to see off the Reform idiots in Tice's latest grift, whilst mutating into them on the pissing out the tent principle (UKIP do over)
Burn it down to cripple Labour when they get in after the election and who cares about the country
Secure a job post election
If they can funnel off money to the chums, donors and mates whilst doing it, so much the better. They are engaged in the sort of behaviour dictators get up to in the end game as the tanks are rolling up to the capital city- siphon off as much loot as possible before fleeing the scene.

Let's hope this year's Tory Party Conference is riven by more internal feuds and recriminations. Another disaster zone following last year's Trussonomics bloodbath. However the most likely thing seems lurching even more to the right to try and absorb support for Reform UK etc - but with any luck helping towards the eventual implosion of the Tories as an electable party ( not that Labour are much better tbh).

I thought she had a brave take on how Boris had previously picked the targets from thin air and they'd suddenly realised government policy aiming to bankrupt as many households as possible wasn't a good idea.
It is of course possible she didn't quite say what she was told to say on her talking points, it was funny though
I bet Sunak is mighty pleased that he's not up at PM's question time today!!!
Irrespective of the above I had a quote to make my leaking 1930s property ready for the new world and I nearly shat myself at the price.

Policy needs a careful look at, which we know is not possible, but if Labour do follow through it will bankrupt the UK.

It is too expensive for individuals that's true. But the biggest issue with green policies is people don't care a fraction of the amount about climate change as they do living a comfortable life. People who believe in climate change don't willingly take steps to address the problem. Therefore green policies when they come up against the increased cost and decreased comfort of life will lose. And when the world is expensive and uncomfortable because of climate change the politicians of today will be gone.shaggy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 11:24 amIrrespective of the above I had a quote to make my leaking 1930s property ready for the new world and I nearly shat myself at the price.

Step one - Stop giving the fucking fossil fuel companies, who rake in profit, subsidies. Put all that money into helping ordinary people greenify their homes.
The wealthiest contribute dispropotionately more carbon emissions than the rest of us. Squeeze them 'til the pips squeak, to borrow a phrase, to raise funds.

Tbh you’ve got to be in a bit of a bubble not to notice a decline in at least some areas, IMHO since covid. Various things going on but I think an awful lot of our public services (often but not exclusively privatised) realised the absolute bare minimum customer service they could get away with and have based their company policies on that ever since. Allied, again IMHO, with a general fall off in behaviour in public places. When you see video of people 30 years ago you really do see the damage of the food industry in all its obese glory. Our food labelling is disgustingly misleading and massive quantities of our "food" is not actually food.

What the actually fuck? Lee Anderson want the poor to work in work camps and tents..look it up. National service is seen as the panacea of all Britain's ills, look it up, pensioners have massive political power over the young, sick and unemployed, in the u.k. and their triple lock actually costs lives and a massive amount of cash.. ..look it up and the right wing are recomending anyone young leaves the country...look it up oh and they really really wantbthe sick to work..again look it up.ASMO wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 8:11 amPlease provide evidence for all this shit you are spouting, or is this plucked from your completely warped imagination? My solution. I implore all of Britain's young to move to Wales and Scotland. It is the only way progressive politics and your interests will be satisfied in the U.K. democratically. Even the telegraph is telling you to move out of the country, You will never outvote pensioners in England...the voting pensioner will never give you a progressive government...so leave them to their hell scape.

Interestingly, it appears that the ZEV Mandate, which will require car makers to have electrified models make up at least 22 per cent of their overall sales from 2024 is still coming into force.
Now, "electrified" is a weasel word, but if you miss the target you get clipped at £15k per vehicle. Given that anecdotally the 5 year rollback is making people think about whether to leave getting an EV (and the deadline also being either ill-researched or wilfully misrepresented in certain quarters as "a total ban in ICE"), a cynic might think some mandarin has hit upon a way to screw an income source out of car companies whose EV demand is suppressed by the announcement.
