Having slept and had time to reflect on Canterbury's loss to Taranaki, I'm left feeling somewhat frustrated. Canterbury were arguably the better team (only marginally as it was very even throughout) for 50 minutes of this match, but Taranaki's brilliant start set up their victory. This just highlights the importance of early points. By racing to a big lead so early, Taranaki put immense pressure on Canterbury and also stopped them accumulating easy points through penalties like they prefer to do. Canterbury only lost by a point, but refused numerous kickable penalties because at 20-3 down they were chasing tries. Early points are crucial and that's where Taranaki really won this match.

The other key area where Taranaki dominated was clearly the breakdown. I've never seen a single player dominate a match as much as Lachlan Boshier did yesterday. He won 4 breakdown penalties and 3 clean turnovers. On every occasion Canterbury were deep in attack. That's seven attacking movements, and point scoring opportunities, repelled by a single player. Canterbury simply had no answer to Boshier's expert pilfering skills. In hindsight they needed to compress their attacking, move their pods of forwards closer together, and get more cleaners to every breakdown. Reuben Thorne will learn from yesterday's loss. Or perhaps the New Plymouth raised Thorne is actually a Taranaki Trojan Horse, whose goal all along was to send the Ranfurly Shield back North

Anyway, well done Taranaki fans. Your team was too good on the day. Us Cantabs need to learn that we cannot win everything, all the time.

I hate having to decide which game to watch out of 2 games being played at the same bloody time.

Otago wins it 36-25.

They'll take a lot of confidence from that into next week's Shield challenge.

That was a great try - and why SH rugby is best

40 metres out and an advantage. Rather than deliberately fluff it for a chance at 3 points they go full on and score - 7 points, thank you

And Wellington take it 21 to 39, 3 tries to 6. Garden Bachop making is closer than it needed to be, but generally kicked well from hand.

Aumua, TJP, Addie, Kirifi, Fifita and Peter Umaga-Jensen had good games. Our 2nd string props need to step up big time.

Fuck Akira is a lazy cunt. I'd have it written it into his contract that he needs to hit at least 10 rucks a half, the fucking glory hunting prick.

My wife’s IT spent a whole day re-building her laptop during lockdown. Nothing they did would work and then it turned out her wireless keyboard was switched on upstairs and I had something leaning on backspace .

Edit: typos corrected ... the perils of “typing” on a phone.

Takes on a much different feel without All Blacks available, but still a quality side and should be looking to bounce back after losing the shield.

Really excited to see how Sam Darry goes, and good to see Ngani Punivai fit again. I also hope Fergus Burke starts to see more game time, for obvious reasons.

Moving Josh McKay from fullback seems a strange move.

Douglas will captain with Prinsep on the bench. Said when he was announced as captain I didn't think he was part of our best loose forward combo, and I stand by that.

Yep, he's supposed to be a real talent. Still, with M10 denuded of ABs, we probably won't really know until he has to step out for the filthy Blues in Soup Rugby.
