I remember the first time I played a side from Vrystaat as a laaitie, lots of well built little men shouting "blind kant" (I was blind side wing). Thinking about it "wyd kant" is also used.
It’s also similar to where the placename Kent - the oldest in England - comes from. Old lingos had that stem word to mean side/corner of land.Plim wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 4:43 pm This has sent me down a language rabbit hole.
As far as I can tell 'kant' for 'side' is related to the Latin 'contra' - against. This is from an etymology website:
contra-
word-forming element meaning "against, in opposition," from Latin adverb and preposition contra "against" (see contra (prep., adv.)). The Latin word was used as a prefix in Late Latin. In French, it became contre- and passed into English as counter-. The Old English equivalent was wiðer (surviving in withers and widdershins), from wið "with, against."
Apparently the Old French form of 'country' was 'cuntree' - "from medieval Latin contrata (terra) ‘(land) lying opposite’, from Latin contra ‘against, opposite’."
Fascinating.

If true, Bongi forgot he is in France. In South Africa they make people washing feet for this. Maybe Bongi should do the same.

Its what makes rugby so fascinating..the worlds no1 side and reigning champions one dodgy OKeefe decision away from being turned over by a coach thats lost at home to Scotland coming up with an almost perfect antidote to their strengths.
While “Wit Kant” does mean “white side”, I doubt they would refer to England as such during a match.
I know the nuance will be lost on the likes of DAC and his "white genocide" mates, but those two things are really not equitable.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 11:15 amIf Curry had racially abused a Saffer we’d never hear the end of it is I think his suggestion
Totally agree, just doesn’t sound right - not that Curry was making it up, just feels like a misunderstandingBlake wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 5:48 pmWhile “Wit Kant” does mean “white side”, I doubt they would refer to England as such during a match.
My feeling is that they were shouting which side needed more bodies for defence. I’ve seen in a Springbok documentary that they call the blind side “die pienk kant”(the pink side) and I suspect they cal the open side “die wit kant” (the white side).
I’d be very surprised and very disappointed if the accusations are indeed true. But if they are he should get the book thrown at him.
It would be utterly bizarre though. Completely contrary to the culture and ethos of his team and a very strange slur for a South African to use. It just feels…off.
He was all game, why not lamp him and get a nice post world cup holiday
Well Willie Le Roux told a Tongan to ‘Fück off you black cūnt’ so it has been the other way round. I don’t think he was referring to the black kant either.Calculon wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 4:13 pmLol, I've never even heard a soutie use the word "cunt" never mind some one of Bongi's background. As for the "other way around" comment , it seems to be spouted by some dodgy people on Twitter decrying black on white racism, so apologies if I don't take it that seriously
Can you imagine telling the ref to watch the blinde kant (off side)Blake wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 5:48 pmWhile “Wit Kant” does mean “white side”, I doubt they would refer to England as such during a match.

Bizarre that English players go the whole match celebrating tiny things that go their way as if they've won the match, clearly gamesmanship and trying to get into the head of the opponent. They do it every match. Then there's an issue when Le Roux does it, when err the match is actually won.
Similar to Dallaglio blaming the ref and no one pulling him up on it. Just like when Dupont moaned about the reffing and no one pulled him up on it. Suddenly you are allowed to criticise the ref.
It's hilarious that Le Roux ran up to the English post match and did a Farrell, and suddenly the problem is the Boks and they're destroying rugby. All he did was celebrate as hard as the English do for a reset scrum.

It is the main innovation of Farrell era England. Something England led the world in. Celebrating every knock, every scrum reset, every tackle, every collapsed maul. All the time in the face of the opponent like England had actually won the match. All to try and get a small edge. No one ever stopped England doing it, so they just kept doing it every match, never any comment. NFL behaviour, English soccer behaviour.
The Boks have merely taken something England does which works, incorporated it, improved on it, and taken it to the next level. Do it even after the game as the actual match winning celebration.
It's hilarious.

A bit of shithousery during the game has been part of rugby forever, but carrying on after the final whistle has been taboo and part of what makes the sport what it is. That Saffers can't bring themselves to admit that is yet another in a long line of them undermining the whole sport in pursuit of their win at all costs, chip on the shoulder, thin skinned mentality.
A bit of moaning about the ref slips into the game and SA "improve and take it to the next level" by making an hour long video and ruining a refs career before enabling death threats to other refs.
That's before we even get into the latest stuff around abusing HIA protocols which hasn't blown up even bigger because no one wants to believe that a team would do that.
They are a scourge on the game and the sooner the current management move on and we get the old Boks back, the better.
