Stunning burst by Yee there to take the gold. Wilde had nothing left at the end but a great race by him too

You could see when he started to look behind him in the last few 100m to see where Yee was that his legs had gone. In a matter of a few minutes Yee went from looking as if he might have a fight for silver with the Frenchman, to overtaking Wilde for gold.

Magnificent race by GBR Women's 4X , executed race plan to perfection.

Took the line at the last couple of strokes. Netherlands who led the race for 1990m looked absolutely gutted.

What was really gutting for the Netherlands was that GBR, did the same at the 2023 worlds as well

Lesson in pacing the run there from Yee.

Terrific effort by Wilde, especially after making up the deficit on the bikes.

It’s just impossible to believe these Chinese swimmers. Smashed the WR and won by a body length in a 100m freestyle…. Struggling to have that

Yeah, I was talking about that with my wife last night and it’s across a lot of the sports, they genuinely seem to feel pleased for the winners despite being disappointed.

It does make me think even more that this should be about the smaller sports where the competitors aren’t millionaires. Football, golf, tennis etc have no place in the Olympics

Couple of questions

How on earth do you get into this walking discipline in the first place and how has a lad named Paul McGrath ended up in Spanish colours.

I don't mind golf and tennis being in it to be honest. Both sports take it very seriously. So long as the sports take it seriously I am happy enough with them being in. Football and sadly boxing in its current state don't.

Since 1996 only a couple of tennis winners across the mens and singles could be considered a bit random; Massau and Puig. Federer (doubles), Nadal, Murray, Williams (both sisters), Henin and other top quality players have won Olympic gold.

It's on his wiki.
McGrath was born and raised in Barcelona. He has a Spanish mother, a Scottish father, and Irish grandparents.
Going a bit further back, there's a surprising number of paddies in Spain, thanks to the Wild Geese. The surname Obregon is a Spanish version of O'Brien.

Had the boxing on in the background.

The commentators "Carini must be mad about something"... Commentator knows why but rather than treat the audience as grown ups they bring up that Carini is emotional and it could be about losing her Dad after Tokyo. The Italian was heard shouting "It is not right" after the final announcement.

Regardless of what one believes about the rights and the wrongs about who is competing in the boxing, the commentator should be truthful. There is controversary because the IOC have taken over running Olympic boxing from the IBA. The IBA had banned Khelif from the world championships due to not meeting the eligibility criteria to compete in the female boxing category. They are believed to have failed gender tests. The IOC apply a different set of rules and therefore two boxers are allowed to complete.

The IBA are incompetent clowns so their test could have been rubbish but those are the facts, and shouldn't be offensive to anyone if a commentator states them rather then talking absolute bollocks about someones upset about their Dad who died three years ago.

From what little is actually stated about this, it sounds as if Khelif has an intersex condition, rather than being a trans athlete.

One of the small percentage of people that contradicts the rather dumb idea that everyone is either a man or a woman, and there’s no other possibility.

No one actually knows because the IBA are incompetent and it will be privileged medical info. Ross Tucker (science of sport pod) suggests it is likely DSD that has caused raised testosterone.

Complex issue but there is no reason that commentary couldn't explain that it is a complex situation. Having a fighter call off after 45s is very unusual.

To be clear, my post was more bemoaning the commentary not intending to start a debate on the actual issue. Pretty naïve in hindsight.

Intersex - 46XY DSD being the common one and likely in this case - still means full male development during puberty. They are male with all the strength advantages of that. Boxing is the sport where this is the most dangerous as punching power is where the difference between males and females is the greatest.

I’m not saying they should, but there needs to be a clearer understanding of these issues. Most of the commentary on this appears to suggest the two boxers are trans, rather than having a genetic condition. And the medical evidence around what sort of advantage this would give is very, very limited. In cases like this it can come as a genuine surprise (and indeed a life changing shock) to the athletes themselves that, for example, they have XY chromosomes despite having female genitalia. There are people in society with conditions like these that go un-noticed until someone tries to have children for example, and ends going for fertility treatment after years of trying.

Yeah, I’m not defending their participation here, I’m just highlighting that most coverage of this has been incredibly lazy and as such SM has assumed they’re trans. And as you’ll know, people are very often unaware of it themselves.

Calling the coverage lazy is putting a VERY generous spin on it.

I'd call it deliberately misleading.

I would suggest it’s a case of being terrified of tackling the issue so deliberately brushing it under the carpet.
