If everyone who buys your magazine is already voting Tory, whats the fucking point of it ?Rhubarb & Custard wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 2:34 pm £6 a magazine, I wonder how much advertising space is on sales below 100k to make a business worth £100 million?
The broadcast media is still led by what’s being reported in the print media. Until that link is broken, things like the spectator and telegraph will have undue influence and as such will be owned by very wealthy people with agendas they need served.fishfoodie wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 4:29 pmIf everyone who buys your magazine is already voting Tory, whats the fucking point of it ?Rhubarb & Custard wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 2:34 pm £6 a magazine, I wonder how much advertising space is on sales below 100k to make a business worth £100 million?

Currently read the Torygraph and Gruniard.
Used to read Economist, Time and Newsweek.
Also watch BBC and Channel 4 news.
So might give it a go. Just another side of the news.

News isn't really supposed to have a side; it's supposed to be a reporting of "facts", & then outside of the News, some editorial comment.vball wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 4:45 pm Currently read the Torygraph and Gruniard.

The death of MSM is because people have woken up to the people producing it have applied more side than Muralitharan could even apply.
It's annoying that now we have to seek "balance", by putting a half-dozen liberal sources of news on one side, & any one of the right-wing rags on the other to achieve this.
I would suggest the left-wing, liberal woe is me, is as much fact less, as the right-wing tribal chanting.
Unless you are there and have a good understanding of what is going on, you need somebody else to interpret and report it.

They were talking about it on the Private Eye podcast. They have a US edition that does well and have an events and conferences bit attached that is a good earner, amongst other things.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 2:34 pm £6 a magazine, I wonder how much advertising space is on sales below 100k to make a business worth £100 million?

Hadn't really followed her trajectory and wasn't in on the hate.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. In case anyone needed a reminder of what a scum bag she is
But some fairly dumb comments on maternity alright, unless she actually wants the birthrate going down. Oh, and not everyone gets a near six figure salary and an investment banker husband, love.

She seems to be advocating for women to return to being housewives. She could be too dumb to realise that's why there was lower maternity pay and higher birthrates.lemonhead wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:49 pmHadn't really followed her trajectory and wasn't in on the hate.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. I don't particularly want to defend Badenoch, but there are cultures that deny women basic rights or are homophobic, and I wouldn't say they are as valid as the liberal Western culture that we all enjoy on this board.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. Statutory maternity pay is pitiful. Though many companies are inherently sexist and punish couples for taking shared leave. We are quite happy to take money from dictatorships that deny women rights and are homophobic for example sports washing entities like financial dopersManchester city and Newcastle united.robmatic wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:01 pmI don't particularly want to defend Badenoch, but there are cultures that deny women basic rights or are homophobic, and I wouldn't say they are as valid as the liberal Western culture that we all enjoy on this board.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. You can easily believe she's a bully who shouts down anyone who doesn't agree with her, because that's the only way her team would let her out to spout such idiotic crap !sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. If she ever listened to people she could easily be leading the Tories
The cultures she mentions as not being valid includes immigrants that "hate Israel", so I think she mainly means Moslems.Hal Jordan wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:48 pmShe's talking about trans people, in all likelihood.robmatic wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:01 pmI don't particularly want to defend Badenoch, but there are cultures that deny women basic rights or are homophobic, and I wouldn't say they are as valid as the liberal Western culture that we all enjoy on this board.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. I have no time for Badenoch, but not all cultures being equal is surely 1) true and 2) something the British State believes?robmatic wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:01 pmI don't particularly want to defend Badenoch, but there are cultures that deny women basic rights or are homophobic, and I wouldn't say they are as valid as the liberal Western culture that we all enjoy on this board.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. Yep. One of the more frustrating things at times with the left particularly around islam is advocating tolerance of sexism or homophobia on a religious basis.Paddington Bear wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 5:40 pmI have no time for Badenoch, but not all cultures being equal is surely 1) true and 2) something the British State believes?robmatic wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:01 pmI don't particularly want to defend Badenoch, but there are cultures that deny women basic rights or are homophobic, and I wouldn't say they are as valid as the liberal Western culture that we all enjoy on this board.sturginho wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 12:40 pm Bad Enoch says that not all cultures are valid, and that maternity pay is excessive. An anecdote - earlier this year a series of comments that were exceptionally homophobic and racist towards Africans, Indians and Jews were made on the facebook page of a cricket club with a very very similar name to mine. The ECB got in touch, their starting position being cutting off funding , season long bans, possible reports to the police. We pointed out that they were actually made by a club affiliated with the local mosque and the case was closed with no further investigation within a week.petej wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 5:57 pmYep. One of the problems with instinctively arguing against things that people you find objectionable say is that sometimes you can find yourself arguing against things that are true.JM2K6 wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 6:01 pm We should definitely be looking for nuance in the dog-whistle politics of Kemi fucking Badenoch

If religious intolerance is all that's required for condemning a, "culture", then I'm happy I'm an atheist
Zero surprise in all of this and the groups targeted for abuse. We tend to discuss racist abuse that occurs in certain directions which is certainly not the reality.Paddington Bear wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 6:12 pmAn anecdote - earlier this year a series of comments that were exceptionally homophobic and racist towards Africans, Indians and Jews were made on the facebook page of a cricket club with a very very similar name to mine. Taking what she says at face value without considering a) the wider context of who she's trying to appeal to and b) the intended meaning of her words is an extremely dumb thing to do.robmatic wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 6:43 pmOne of the problems with instinctively arguing against things that people you find objectionable say is that sometimes you can find yourself arguing against things that are true.JM2K6 wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 6:01 pm We should definitely be looking for nuance in the dog-whistle politics of Kemi fucking Badenoch

Well that & very recent history for the ECB in Yorkshire might make them acutely aware of their recent failures, & thus, ironically, a bit gun shy of cracking down on abuse from a group who were victims of incoming abuse.petej wrote: Sun Sep 29, 2024 8:13 pmZero surprise in all of this and the groups targeted for abuse. Zero tolerance is hard to do, but at least if you profess to have it, you can then use it as a shield for being sometimes over exuberant in cracking down on perceived abuse. The old; act now & apologize later ... if necessary philosophy.
You either have a policy or you don’t. If people on the WhatsApp group were spouting that sort of shit then they should be subject to the same penalties regardless of their colour/religion.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2 ... elationsNadhim Zahawi instructed his lawyer to threaten legal action against a tax campaigner who helped reveal that the then chancellor was under investigation by HM Revenue and Customs, according to a tribunal document.
Zahawi’s solicitor, Ashley Hurst, is accused of breaching his regulator’s code of conduct by attempting to prevent Dan Neidle from publishing correspondence threatening legal action over the tax expert’s revelations about the then Tory leadership candidate.
The correspondence, sent by Hurst in July 2022, demanded that Neidle retract accusations of dishonesty against Zahawi in managing his tax affairs. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) said it also attempted to “improperly restrict” Neidle’s right to publish that correspondence or discuss its contents.

Hypocritical chinless wonder can't explain where his donations come from
Robert Jenrick has defended being handed a £75,000 donation from a company which had received money from a firm registered in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), despite criticising Labour over the freebies row.
Questions have been raised over the ultimate source of the funds from The Spott Fitness, which gave Mr Jenrick three separate £25,000 donations in July.
The Tory leadership contender told Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips that The Spott Fitness "as I understand it... is a fitness company that operates in the UK", and the donation was "perfectly legal and valid".
The firm is owned by Mark Dembovsky, a lawyer and consultant and fitness entrepreneur Benjamin Hudson. As of December last year, when the most recent accounts were published, the firm had no employees and £330,000 in financial liabilities. It has never turned a profit.

If everything Jenrick has done is within the rules there really shouldn't be any reason to be upset?
No, wait, it's the intention not the mechanism that is why these things are bad. Who knew.
