Found out on Monday that the parents of the team are expected to host the lads from Muir colledge.
Unfortunately a number of the Milneton boys can't accomodate a kid because of space. My wife obviously volunteered to take 3 boys.
Not realising that she now has to transport 4 boys, my boy included.......plus kit bags to and from every match. If I had my bakkie no problem...now with the Havals
it can't be done. Kit bags are huge. So we are trying to resolve that issue.

Sorry I am new to senior cricket.

What an amazing itinerary they have planned for the boys. Including a welcome dinner and braai with karaoke after Saturday.

So we collected our 3 lads yesterday and got them settled in. Muir college will be taking on Pinelands college in a declaration match at Pinelands.
Millies will be taking on GREY College in a declaration match at Milnerton.

Tough one for Millies first up

Grey gave Westerford a hiding yesterday and Milnerton beat Muir college comfortably. It's an Eastern Cape vs Western Cape tournament so bragging rights on the line.
We had a good laugh last night after the match as my son got the wicket of one of our guests. So lots of teasing going on. Not sure of all the fixtures for today but Muir college are playing Westerford and expecting to get their first win after a draw and a loss. Milnerton are hosting Alexander road high 11 . Milnerton with the 2 victories so far

Another victory for Millies in the tournament.
Beating Alexander Road by a fair bit.

I am astounded by the way they push the kids at high school level in cricket. At Milnerton high they have to do a minimum of 3 sessions fitness training from 06.00 to 07.30 every morning before school. And 3 net sessions a week too. Net sessions are 2 hours. Thats the minimum the coach warns. If you want to be in the 1st team he expects more , and inspects the log ins every week to see who is committed.
Thats 10.5 hours............and me having to leave home at 05.40 am and getting to work at 06.15 am.

In other news, Edgemead under 11s got invited to the J P Dumini acadamy tournament.
4 teams playing against each other over 4 weeks with the final being played at Rondebosch.
Victoria , Primrose , JPD Acadamey and Edgemead. 2 boys from my youngest's prior club Sunningdale arrived at Edgemeads first training session yesterday..they are my sons mates from school....effectively removing the top 3 from Sunningdale cricket club, including my youngest . Seems like everyone is over the parents politics that has ruined Sunningdale since the new chairman took over. Bonus we got a decent keeper which has been our achilles heel. We also got 2 very good fielders , sloggers and semi decent bowlers. So our number 6 and 7 batting is looking very strong giving us a much better shot at the tournament.

Today I can kick my arse for allowing my laaitie spending so much time with his sport He played first team hockey for three years at Paul Roos , who have 17 hockey teams from u14-18. They practise twice a week, did fitness early morning twice a week plus playing club hockey for Somerset West, another two hours twice a week. So he spend those two days per week practise hockey from 15h00-21h00. Granted he played SA Schools but he could have done much better in his academy. It was to much sport and had to much playing. He did have a good year in England as gap student at Queens College coaching hockey and cricket. Unfortunately Covid forced him back home and end his hockey career.

Good advice is that your kids make academy first priority.

Academy is great. But it's a team of mercenaries.
I prefer club. If your club is doing well you play against all the Academies in any case. This year my youngest played against the Patriot Academy in a tournament and now against the JPD Academy. Listen. The kids representing Academy are very good. But we learnt from the CPL . You need batting depth and your fielding has to be spot on. We have now sorted out both at Edgemead. So can't wait to play them next week. But fishing first This weekend at Witsands. Pumped for the weekend.

You son sounds like a machine

Edgemead under 11s had a great first game of the season. Beating Durbanville. My son did very well with the bat and ball. But the best for me was how he got to his 50. He had battled through to 42. Now at this point you would expect him to work his way to 50. He decided he wasn't going to be a nervy 50 but rather hit his next ball for 6. He was now on 48. He did exactly the same thing and hit another 6 to get to 54 and retired. That was balsy.

All that in 24 balls at a 224 strike rate

Man what a hiding we gave Durbanville A.
The DV managers son who is apparently a decent bowler got spanked by my boy for 4 of his 5 sixes. They thought they were going to walk all over us.
That's 3 losses in a row for Durbanville against us

Yoh. Edgemead is building a strong side this season.
We played our first JP21 tournament match this afternoon.
We destroyed the JP Duminy academy.
It's a T10 format. Only 10 overs per innings so no time to settle in . Just hitting from the get go.
We managed 59 for 1 and bowled out the JPD Academy for 17 runs.

Milnerton 1st beat Bellville 1st in a tight match. Set a target of 93 to win , after the 5th wicket fell for Bellville it was tail enders. With 3 runs and 2 wickets Bellville bottled it.

That's my boy

How much prouder can a dad be when his boy gets the weeks Master Blaster award for his club. On the score sheet I counted 24 balls faced but it really doesn't matter. Sadly if a junior makes their 50 they retire him to give other kids a chance to bat. In the form my son was in he may have gotten his ton. Caleb is really enjoying that SM bat. The best move we made was to accept Edgemeads offer to move clubs. It was scary at first because he had to fit into a new side. But he has really justified his inclusion as an opening batsman.

I am not a fan of the current school system. You seem to be allocated matches against the surrounding schools and its not a strength vs strength system.
Sunningdale primary scored 191 runs in 15 overs yesterday against Parklands college. Thats almost13 runs an over. And we bowled them out for 42 runs.....which they got because we did not bowl our top bowlers. Just to make a game of it.
I mean imagine the parents of the kids in the opposition watching their children get caned like that. And the worst part is that most of the schools in our area are not much stronger than that. So what it basically is , is a smash fest every time our batsmen go in to bat. Now we have probably got the strongest side I have ever seen one of my children play in, but they aren't getting tested.
I see a huge difference between school and club. In that you get tested at club level against really good bowlers and batsmen , the team gets to play together for the whole season so you know your strengths and weaknesses. And can cover for the weaker players. Also you can see the differencs between classically coached children and children that just have a good eye , strong arm and decent bat. And then another level up in tournaments, where all the kids are strong and picked for positions. And bowlers are very strong. So your top order is really tested.
What I have noticed is the rise of a lot more mini tournaments. These are amazing because you get strength vs strength. 4 clubs will get together and create a mini tournament with a final. Love these. Probably the best cricket around for the children really

My youngest has been in some great form with the bat these past few weeks. Edgemead got 91 without loss in the JP21 match on Friday. My boy was unbeaten on 25 .it's only 10 overs .
On Saturday he top scored for the match with an entertaining 29 from 20 balls when Edgemead beat Durbanville in a 25 over match on a very soft pitch with no bounce.
That's 96 runs just for the week.

My youngest went for a duck yesterday.

My fault. Game was scheduled to start at 3pm and I arrived at 2.50 but they decided to start early. So he borrowed kit and his bat was a size 5 and he plays with a size 6. He was so angry with me. But our top 3 were all out for 12 runs so the bowling was good from the opposition. But then my youngster came in on the change of bowlers from the openers and cleaned up the 3 top batsmen for the opposition with a great bowling spell . And that won us the game when they were only 1 down and 50 runs to get after 4 overs with 16 overs remaining. Great recovery from my lad.
The batsmen thereafter were bowled out easily by our part timers with them ending 30 short.
It was a scare for Sunningdale primary as we are unbeaten this year. But great to get a bit of a challenge

My heart is full of pride. My youngest got his call up to the first team at his school today. We were messaged to say he no longer need attend the under 11s practices but this Tuesday he must attend the under 13 practice.

And to top that off Edgemead beat Primrose tonight to go unbeaten in the JP21 tournament with the final to be held at Bishops

Don't push him Sards. Try to keep him in his age group. I know it's great for you as parent but emosionely is better to keep him in his age group.

I have to admit my first thought was that he needs double thigh pads. He will be ok ouboet. He plays with his 16 year old brother and his friends.

BTW my youngest just hit another 51 runs not out against the All Rounders this morning. They get retired when they get their 50

He needs more of a challenge
He got the 51 in 32 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes.

He played for Edgemead under 16s in a T20 today. They were short of a player . Obviously they didn't let him bat or bowl but he took a great catch . And what made it more special was that it was his older boets partner . His older boet was playing for the opposition . And top scored for Milnerton. Who won the match.

First practice session for the under 13s. There was more pace and bouncers. But my boy was really enjoying the ball coming onto the bat quicker. He walked away from that session with his head held high and a lot of respect from most of the older boys , and of course the usual bitterness from the current top performers. One kid called my boy a fatty. Just because my boy was smashing his bowling. And to make it worse. He is the coaches son. After a year of playing in a great environment we are back to this shit. Thank vok he goes to high school next year. And my youngsters older brother is planning to extract some revenge during initiation week

What a devastating blow for my young lad yesterday.
So far in 3 club matches he has 2 unbeaten 50s and top scored in a very low scoring match. Got man of the match for a school match last week and sat out last Saturdays club match to give other kids a chance. Was fielding first in a school match yesterday afternoon and stopped a hard shot that would have gone to the boundary and fractured his right thumb . He still collected the ball and threw it in for a run out......but now he is out of this Fridays JP21 Tournament final and won't make our last club match of the season against Bellville for Edgemead to go unbeaten for the season. He was literally crying on the field when his coach got to him....not because of the pain , but because he knows he wont be part of the 2 upcoming matches. We are waiting to get to him to the doc this morning for Xrays to see what is the story. But it doesn't look good and he is in a lot of pain with his thumb in a splint

Xrays showed 2 fractures in the thumb. In a cast for 2 weeks and then a more mobile splint for 4 weeks.
Lots of tears when he got the news from the doc. But now is over it and thinking about the holidays and fishing

My youngest stats for club cricket for the season.
He is on 134 off 78 balls. At an average of 45 runs per match. With only 1 out.
His opening partner has 30 odd runs more than my lad but he has 2 games more than my lad because of his fractured thumb. My lad was 39 runs ahead of him before his injury.
Next week my lad is going to get a cricketer of the year award for his school.
The lad has had an amazing year.

Caleb stats

Hows the strike rate.
