Trying to find a way, but unfort the English were too good for a poor BC performance. Here we go again, light effective extinguished at the end of the tunnelGuy Smiley wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 2:06 amGood. Should I blame the ref?
Well done England, deserved the win.

Pretty much agree with you here. Uncharacteristically poor fielding from the BCs really let England away and after that it was all in the head and over. One of those games where the overall effect from one aspect ( the poor fielding) is a bit of a distortion. We'll see, I guess.
Yep - the difference between the two sides was totally due to NZ's abysmal catching. They turned a match winning position into a losing one. The way England play, they will give chances - you simply have to hold on to them or they'll turn the game around in a heartbeat.Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 4:37 amPretty much agree with you here. On the plus side for NZ I thought Smith and O'Rourke looked like they could have an impact - and Henry was pretty accurate. Southee got some swing but his pace is dropping off fast. It's still an attack that could cause England problems - but they've managed to play our lads into a bit of form.
England's bowlers, despite picking up 20 wickets, appeared to lack the pace that some of them were selected for - they were way behind what O'Rourke was clocking up. NZ's batsmen could easily make runs against our attack - there's nothing there that will intimidate them - in truth, it wasn't the batting that really let them down despite some soft dismissals to our 'spinner' - they really should be making hay against him without pushing it.
Nicely set up for the next two tests - especially knowing that England also have the ability to self destruct and lose to anyone.
And the definition of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time is?
Time to clean out the actually Board, they are not advancing the game in NZ, are making the same mistakes we have been making since the 1970s, and have proven to be absolutely gutless when it comes to taking action. We can then look at the team.
Absolutely this. As much as England deserved to win the test, NZ deserved to lose it. 'Catches win matches' is the oldest cliche in the game for a reason.Ovals wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 11:42 amYep - the difference between the two sides was totally due to NZ's abysmal catching. I agree that nobody expected the 3 - 0 whitewash of India in India.Jethro wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:10 pmAnd the definition of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time is?

Soon to be followed by a 3 - 0 loss to England at home, the situation is so much better than it has been in the past where the occasional series win covered up major issues. Welcome to back to the future.Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 1:36 amKiwias wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 1:27 amI agree that nobody expected the 3 - 0 whitewash of India in India.Jethro wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:10 pm

Blackcaps' WTC final hopes dealt blow by points docking for slow over rate
AAP • December 4th, 2024 9:00 am
England and New Zealand have been deducted three World Test Championship points for slow over rates during their series opener in Christchurch.
Both teams were also fined 15 per cent of their match fees for the offence.
Although England cannot reach next year's final at Lord's despite their eight-wicket win at Hagley Oval, the penalty dropped New Zealand from joint fourth to fifth, a major blow to their chances of reaching next year's showpiece game.
India and South Africa are currently in position to contest the final with Australia in third.
"New Zealand and England were both found to have three overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration, with sides penalised one point for each over they were found to be short," said the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Smithy's take on Blackcaps' first Test loss to England | Sport Nation
"Both captains - Tom Latham of New Zealand and Ben Stokes of England - pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing."
The ICC said on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Rod Tucker, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth official Kim Cotton had levelled the charges.
David Boon, of the ICC elite panel of match referees, imposed the sanctions.
England have now been docked 22 points for slow over rates in this cycle, more than twice the next most penalised team, Australia, but they have also played 20 Tests, seven more than the next highest, Australia's 13.
It was the Blackcaps' first offence.
New Zealand, the inaugural World Test Championship winners, need to win the next two matches against England and favourable outcomes from other games if they are to reach next year's final.
The second Test starts in Wellington on Friday.
I drink and I forget things.
Really good to see this action taken. It will hopefully spur other teams into ensuring they do not infringe in the same way, though Ben Stokes has perhaps not taken it quite as well as that article would suggest.
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/new- ... st-1463242Stokes, England's captain, responded to the sanctions with three shrugging emojis and writing on his Instagram story: "Good on you ICC. Finished the game with 10 hours of play still left." England have now been docked 22 WTC points in the 2023-25 cycle for their slow over-rates, having previously lost 19 of the 28 points they gained during the 2023 Ashes series for the same reason.
Looks like NZ remains the same as well, with the four quicks selected for the Basin Reserve wicket. Guess we have a couple of part time spinners to complement, but not entirely sure that was the right way to go. For mine Satner and Young should have come in.
Yep, confirmed it's the same playing XI from ChCh. Would've also preferred to see Santner and Young included.
On the bright side, the weather's looking good for the next few days.
I too would have loved to see those two players included.Gumboot wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 3:10 amYep, confirmed it's the same playing XI from ChCh. Would've also preferred to see Santner and Young included.

I'd still prefer a ten run per over tariff levelled in game for slow over rates to adjusting the points needed to qualify for a Mickey Mouse event, but it's something at least, odd mind to be penalised by David Boon for moving too slowly
