Heaps of great bands were playing old Fenders, Jazzmasters, Jags etc before Kurt. Even well after Kurt died vintage Jazzmasters and Jags could be found for cheap in the States. It was the Strats and Teles that appreciated like crazy. Vintage Jazz’s & Jags slowly climbed to about US$4K in 2019 but have since doubled and then some in the last 4-5 years for late 50s / early - mid 60s versions. A Tele and a Mary Kaye Strat were the first Fenders reliced in 1995.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 10:38 amMr Bungle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 12:25 amI played a 1946 Martin last week. They only wanted NZ$37,500 for it. Owned by a musician made famous for playing on the Grand Ole Opry. The Briarhoppers stayed together in one form or another for 8 decades.
The guitar was purchased new in 1946 by Roy 'Whitey' Grant, a musician from North Carolina. 'Whitey' as he was known, made up one half of the duo Whitey & Hogan before joining North Carolina WBT Radio station house band, The Briarhoppers. Whitey owned and toured the world many times with the guitar until he passed in 2010.
Yeah the price of vintage guitars has gone bonkers, and to tie it in with the Grunge posts, before Kurt Cobain started playing pawn shop Fenders no one wanted old ones (generalisation for effect, but it's around that timeline), now they are priced out of reached and the manufactures are damaging new instruments to look "vintage" and adding 50% to the price

Funnily enough I was thinking about this earlier as I was listening to Springsteen’s cover of Nightshift, IMO better than the original

That Cowboy Junkies album was a sensation when released. They have some recent clips on youtube and they look a little contrived or trying too hard but that album... pure joy.
