Help me out here. Wired controller for the PC is falling to bits. Young lad wants to get an Xbox wireless controller. What do we need to plug this into PC? Does it need an adaptor of some sort?

Either a wireless adaptor or could use Bluetooth

Cheers. Don't think the desktop has Bluetooth but might strike it lucky.

Bioshock should be in the conversation.

Yup. Certainly right up there - the whole series is excellent.

Just lost access to red dead redemption 2 on the ps5.
Overall I really enjoyed this game , but didn’t want to buy it outright for the online experience now that I completed the main story.

Didn’t really get into it initially, but came back to it after a couple of years and immersed myself into the experience, it really is one of the greatest games of all time overall : truly stunning visuals , lots of humour and violence , allow me to excuse the dire plot and cardboard characters.

Are there any on here who enjoy the online rdr2 experience ? I played a few hours of it but seemed a bit more complex with the various currency and tokens and levelling up, and with a silent character I didn’t really give two shits about it the way the whole Morgan marston dutch saga invoked.

Just finished batman Arkham Shadow. Quest 3/3s exclusive. If you enjoyed the Arkham series of games, this is fantastic. They've managed to translate the combat into vr extremely well, stealth is also good. Absolutely loved it, and planning on trying to nail the combat challenge rooms too, desperately hoping they release dlc and a sequel.

Is Elite Dangerous any good ?
Did a couple of hours last night, seems as good as I recall elite v1 back in the day of Lenslok pirate protection. Suspect trading and mining will be fun right up until I encounter combat where I will get zapped by some NPC with a popgun.

Hi weirdos, I’m thinking of getting my son a Nintendo Switch. He will want to play (time limited) Minecraft and I thought it would be fun family entertainment for things like Mario Carts, FIFA etc. He’s only 8 so it will be pretty limited use.

Does anyone have any advice on if this is the best consol and best places to buy it from - driven by price!

Is this for Xmas? Otherwise Nintendo Switch 2 is rumoured to be coming early next year, in which case either get the new one or see if the older model goes on sale cheaper for stock clearance

Tough question Bro, each console has its own diehard fans. If into better tech then xBox or PS, if after a platform that operates both as a console and hand held then Switch.

As someone said rumour is a new model is coming in 2025, there have been leaks, no announcement from Nintendo as yet.

If getting a Switch score a copy of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Steam is an online gaming site, you purchase past titles at reasonable prices for the PC mainly. They have released their own console, no idea of the quality there as haven't got any friends, real or online, who have one.

I may not be the most qualified person to answer this but essentially Valve, who own Steam and made games like Half Life 2, Left For Dead and Portal have made a handheld that works with games off Steam. They assess and grade games for their ability to work on the Steam deck and companies actually update their games to get Steam Deck Verified status.

I'll probably buy one at some stage.

Basically it’s a handheld PC - a portable console that plays PC games. The main distribution service for PC games is Steam, and if you have a library there you can use it on a Deck.

I own a deck because I have a stupidly huge Steam library, but if you’re starting from scratch then a Switch is a decent option.

Slightly object to the ‘weirdos’ comment. I don’t call your hobbies weird…

Dude your Welsh, would have thought it went with the territory :???:

So the steam deck loads stuff you buy off steam? Sounding like a good investment considering the wealth of games the online platform has at decent prices.

Dude, I’m really not! Though I do live in North Wales. (Hint - the name is Welsh for ‘Scotland’)

Yes, that’s exactly what it does. I think it struggles with more recent AAA titles, and not all PC games lend themselves well to a smaller screen or a controller. But I’ve got a huge library of less demanding/older titles I’ve picked up in sales, and they suit the Deck perfectly. That was the best part of getting one - I didn’t need to buy any new games for it, just installed a bunch that I’d never got round to playing!

The main disadvantage is that it runs on SteamOS, a proprietary version of Linux. Doesn’t cause issues in itself, but it’s a bit tedious if you want to play games you own on a platform other than Steam. It can be done, but you need workarounds. Most of my stuff is on Steam, but a significant chunk is on Epic (as they kept giving stuff away free) or GOG.

My 8 year old's had one for a year or two. He's perfectly happy with it. It doesn't even end up costing much in new games as he pretty much plays FIFA 100% of the time. Can use it hand held or on the TV which is pretty useful when we go away.

Usual issues of regulating his time on it, with the odd arguement and banning involved.

Tempted to ask for The Spectrum for Xmas. Yes, it’s a gimmick. Yes, if I want to play 8-bit games there’s a bunch of emulators out there already and I have a CD somewhere with pretty much all of the Speccy games as .tap files. But I’m really tempted all the same…

Yep, mine (tad older than yours) have a Switch, it’s the best for casual gamers & when their pals are round as the multiplayer games are good for for those with smaller hands than mine.
I loathe the whole front end & how you take the end bits off thing and even how to switch the thing off , but I’m a PlayStation fan and clearly spoilt by Sony’s excellence .

It will get left forever in a year or two I suspect, same as how the Wii got abandoned before it.

One more question, for an 8 year old are they going to notice the difference between the Neon and the OLED? It seems to be about £50 price difference

Unless he will be gaming in your sunny south facing conservatory, listen to your inner jock and save the cash on the telly

The Switch itself has a screen you gimp, the oled is better for that I believe especially in sunny rooms.
Have no idea which one we have so it’s not a comparison I can honestly confirm as being worth it. Also have no idea why I wrote telly and not console , soz - it’s almost as if I’m not really paying attention to what I’m typing whilst I’m listening to some meandering WENUS and TPS teams call

To Clarify, the switch can be either taken and played with as a portable game thing , like a Gameboy used to be or much like a modern phone (there’s a PC one as well whose name I forget), or the switch can be left in place and used as a proper console on a telly and thr kid has their friends round to play multiplayer Super Smash Bros Kart Mario thing

Anyone played Days Gone? It’s on sale on Steam for a tenner and I’m tempted at that price point.
