He was gabbling on about sending marines in too, which is actually unlawful without Congressional approval

Gabbling no longer, they are activating and deploying 700 marines to LA, "whilst activating more National Guard".

I suppose it's too much to ask of the incumbent knuckle dragging morons, but people like Hegseth have surely noticed the preponderance of brown & black faces in the military, & maybe reached the conclusion that maybe asking these soldiers & marines to go into the communities that raised them, & still support their families, is possibly not the best idea ?

There's a part of the Burn's Vietnam series where one of the returning Marines is told he's going to be sent to do exactly this when riots erupted in Boston etc after the civil disobedience at that time, & his sentiment was probably what his peers now would think; "No Fucking way !"

Watching the stand-off between protestors and National Guard on CNN. Man the troops look like Robocop/Black Shirts rolled into one.

Bloody ludicrous.

It's the marines that are the scary deployment - their training is the complete opposite of what you want in this kind of situation and a big chunk of those guys haven't exactly come from the gentle side of town.

Meanwhile, in classic Trump fashion, the National Guard are sleeping on floors and there's no proper logistics. They may as well be attendees at a rally.

Oh wait, that's £45m military parade for his birthday that in no way reeks of small dick dictatorship energy.

How many stories like this are playing out, do you reckon?
A group of men removed from the US to Djibouti, in east Africa, are stranded in a converted shipping container together with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officers sent to supervise them after a deportation flight to South Sudan was stopped by an American court.

The eight deportees and 13 Ice staff have begun to “feel ill”, the US government said.

Eight men, from Latin America, Asia and South Sudan, and the Ice staff have been stuck at a US naval base since late May. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that the Ice officers began to fall ill “within 72 hours of landing” in Djibouti, and continue to suffer from suspected bacterial upper

The Trump administration had attempted to send the eight detainees, who it said had been convicted of criminal offenses, to South Sudan, but a judge intervened to stop their flight in May, arguing that they were entitled to challenge the deportation in the courts.

Mellissa Harper, a top official at the DHS and Ice, said in a court declaration that the detainees are being held in a shipping container that was previously converted into a conference room. The Ice officers are “sharing very limited sleeping quarters”, Harper said, with only six beds between 13 people.

In the declaration, Harper said burn pits in Djibouti have led to Ice officials experiencing “throat irritation”. She said the outside temperature frequently exceeds 100F (38C) in the daytime, and said Ice officials were at risk of malaria because they did not take anti-malaria medication before arriving in Djibouti.

“Within 72 hours of landing in Djibouti, the officers and detainees began to feel ill,” Harper said, but they were unable to obtain proper testing for a diagnosis.

Harper added: “Upon arrival in Djibouti, officers were warned by US Department of Defense officials of imminent danger of rocket attacks from terrorist groups in Yemen. The Ice officers lack body armor or other gear that would be appropriate in the case of an attack.”

The declaration detailed the conditions that the detainees face, including only being allowed to shower once a day, and being subjected to “pat-downs and searches” during trips to the restroom, which is 40 yards from the shipping container where they are being held. Harper said there is limited lighting in the area, “which makes visibility difficult and creates a significant security risk for both the officers and aliens”.

The Trump administration had attempted to send the eight men to their home countries of Myanmar, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, Mexico and South Sudan. Those countries declined to accept them, however, and US authorities then arranged to fly them to South Sudan in late May.

Brian Murphy, a US district judge in Boston, intervened, ruling that the administration had “unquestionably” violated his earlier order, issued in April, which ruled that anyone facing deportation to third-party countries had the right to challenge it legally.

If memory serves, that was the black chap who refused when he saw they were handing out M16s rather than riot gear, and subsequently never got promoted following his refusal?

We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California. If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated. The very incompetent “Governor,”  Gavin Newscum, and “Mayor,” Karen Bass, should be saying, “THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU, SIR.” Instead, they choose to lie to the People of California and America by saying that we weren’t needed, and that these are “peaceful protests.” Just one look at the pictures and videos of the Violence and Destruction tells you all you have to know. We will always do what is needed to keep our Citizens SAFE, so we can, together, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

You really have to wonder if you're off in a parallel universe at this point. Utterly bare-faced vapid lies. Juvenile name calling that juveniles would be ashamed of. Directing armed military at ones own citizens on a dick-swinging whim. And we're only getting going with this administration. Where the US goes from here who the hell knows.

I've heard from people living in LA that in most parts of LA you'd barely know there were riots/disturbance of any kind. Yet we go from that to riots Trump instigated in some small pockets, so I suppose he's at least right they were instigated, to LA would have obliterated

This, plus the entire administration and their propaganda machine are rolling in behind him. A climate ripe for indoctrination anyway as the media sphere's a hyperpartisan shitfest to begin with.

He might as well be claiming black is white (pun not intended). Unless people choose to dig deeper it's only believing one 'untrustworthy' source over another. And as for pleased - latest RMG Research/Napo poll puts him on a 50-45 approval rating.

Thanks to relentless propagandising, there are rural/red state Republicans convinced that whole cities like Portland and Seattle were destroyed during the BLM protests or that the entirety of Chicago is effectively a warzone due to the gang violence in a couple of districts.

Yeah, the delusion is weird. A few years ago (2022) I was speaking to a guy in the US who was convinced that Bayswater in London was a complete no go zone that the police didn't go into after dark. I'd been in a hotel there a couple of weeks previously and walked up to Paddington, and the confusion on his face was really odd when I told him. You could tell he couldn't bring himself to disbelieve whatever information source had told him it was a no go zone.

This is all getting quite chilling.
Pete Hegseth has told the House committee that he’s anticipating military personnel to stay in Los Angeles for 60 days to “ensure that those rioters, looters and thugs on the other side assaulting our police officers know that we’re not going anywhere”.
A letter sent from Noem to Hegseth on Sunday, obtained by the Chronicle, requested that the Pentagon give “Direction to DoD forces to either detain, just as they would at any federal facility guarded by military, lawbreakers under Title 18 until they can be arrested and processed by federal law enforcement, or arrest them.”

So Noem is asking Hegseth to knowingly give an illegal order, & then expects the sub-ordinate Officers to just pass on this illegal order down the line ?

What will they do when an LAPD Cop slaps some corporal in handcuffs & brings them back to the Station ?

Yep, because they might be a bunch of racist scumbags, but they're the ones with a badge & who are paid by the City to do the arresting.

The Nationals Guard guys know this too, & bar the odd nutter, none of them will be too keen to follow stupid orders; hell I'm sure a bunch of them are also in Law Enforcement, just from Bakersville or other parts of CA.

All this dedication to the men and women in blue, yet they were absolutely fine with Trump pardoning the thugs who beat and injured well over 100 policemen on 6 Jan, directly causing the death of four (IIRC). Fucking hypocrits!!
