He seems out of his depth. Has he never coached talented players before?

Should have brought his wing man Shaun Edwards with him.

It makes me sad that he isn't the All Blacks coach.

I suspect the Chiefs miss a coach with serious mana, like Dave Rennie.

The silver lining is that Gatland is stumbling so badly that he won’t even be considered for All Blacks coach when Foster is inevitably stood down in 2022. This will allow Jamie Joseph and his team to take over the ABs without going through any farcical selection process.

It’s a tribute to Dave Rennie’s and Colin Cooper’s previous coaching that the Chiefs started the pre-covid season as well as they did. Through their adversity the remnants of Rennie/Cooper saw them win three on the bounce despite Gatland.

One would hope Scott Robertson would have first dibs, Shirley.

No. Robertson's achievements as coach are dwarfed by Joseph's.

I would think so as Rennie is out of the picture

Robertson’s still sitting at the little kids’ table. I agree that it’s time for him to join the grownups, but not coaching the ABs. Let him show what he can do with a Japan or an Italy.

I was having a chuckle thinking about that.

Though, I wonder if it is that his tactics only work on certain athletic types. NH gym monkeys?

Or this is just bad luck now emerging in to a player confidence issue.

Wales weren't just gym monkeys under Gatland's tenure, though.

I think it's more that when he got his Grand Slams with Wales, the other nations were undergoing slumps of their own.

His first Lions tour succeeded against a pretty poorly coached Aussie team. In 2017 the ABs were in a bit of a decline, and even then Gatland needed a fair bit of luck. His midweek sides weren't great against Super teams.

For me the most irritating thing about him is how whiny and thin skinned he is. It was a shame to see some of that rubbing off on the Chiefs in the way Angus Ta'avao spoke when interviewed at half time.

Gatland is turning the Chiefs into a bunch of crybabies.

Not sure, he certainly had Wales as greater than the sum of their parts but how much was down to Edwards?

I think the lions will take a decent beating in SA anyway but they shouldn't have picked the coach so far out from the tour.

Gats is clearly incompatible with NZ rugby and that result has left a bad taste in my mouth ( and I have been sculling back brown bombers too!)

Was going to ask how they're trying to play the game.

Only have Aotearoa highlights and felt like every score the Chiefs got to start a bit of momentum the clock skipped 15min ahead to the next Canes try.

Some coaches need time to settle in and build up from a solid base. Gatland may be one of those. He started slowly/poorly with Wales and built them up to a force to be reckoned with. Then you have your quick fix coaches like Jake White. The latter gets immediate results but the performances tend to taper off as time goes by.

It’s a running joke mate. The Gatland Out! thread on Planet Rugby was one of the most long running and entertaining threads on the forum.

Yeah prior to Covid hitting The Chiefs looks really good. Gats will be a decent coach

Yes, Naki posted it up on other bored after 1 half of a game, when the chiefs were down at half time.

And the Welsh did it before this.

He's been getting his whinge on after each loss. We don't want that sort of NH influence down here.

He's a complete sook. Not hard enough to be an AB coach, and obviously not hard enough to be a Super coach either.

The Crusader’s try from the quick line out last week was a direct result of Gatland’s whinge culture. Brad Webber followed his coach’s lead and was too busy complaining to the referee instead of worrying about what mattered.

That type of attitude from the top can be insidious in a team.

The Chiefs scored a few of those quick-witted, catch the oppo napping tries themselves during the Rennie era.

They might come in handy at the back end of the comp.

This pretty much sums it up for me. He's a whiny little twat. Every time I see him on tv he is whining.

I’m thoroughly enjoying him getting his arse handed to him. It looks like he hasn’t coached to the new rules, and still only knows pick and bosh, one out and bosh, mispass and bosh. Doesn’t know what to do with small talented players like McKenzie and Cruden. Cruden looks like he doesn’t even believe in his own decision making, which is probably down to coaching. No imagination in attack. And he doesn’t have Edwards to sort out the defence and drill people in training.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
