Perhaps as a result of the NI and Wales lockdowns?
About 7 or 8 % of the population. Might have some effect, but the tiered
System might be working. Not fast enough though
Hospital admissions are also still increasing, slightly but steadily. Recorded cases aren't the whole story.

It is massively overfunded to do the job it was set up to do, it is a massively inefficient leviathan that we can feed money to at an ever increasing rate and it still won't be enough...
Now, I'll never defend how the NHS is run because its a complete cluster fuck and I agree savings could be made in places. However it is underfunded, as an example the recent demand and capacity for my area has stated we are running at 50% the ambulances and crews we need.

Completely agree, we have been fed slanted views and half-truths from the beginning of this plague.

A very valid point.

By over-egging the consequences of not taking measures against the virus, they have conceded ammunition to those who would represent it as merely a manifestation of the 'flu.

kids got sent home from school because of autumn lurgies.

dutifully trotted off to get the poor blighters tested. booked the test drove 20mins there and back. The whole palaver took an hour in total.

For all the problems of testing reported in the past it seemed to be running smoothly today.

fingers crossed that I don't have a mini school holiday during lockdown on my hands.

There are 11,000 "severely sick" Covid patients in English hospitals - NHS England chief Sir Simon Stevens

Patients in hospital
11,458 patients currently in hospital, reported on Sunday, 1 November 2020.

Patients on ventilation
1,075
So nearly all hospitalisation are severely sick, but only 1 in 10 severely sick enough to be on ventilators? :eh:

Looking good.

With no affect from any lockdown or tier changes yet.

The Govt have taken a political decision, lockdown now , get it out of the way in 6 weeks and everyone is free to party at Xmas.

The alternative would be to limp along in Nov, lots of siren calls for a lockdown--- death rates rise, they lockdown in response and are forever known as the ones who messed up xmas 2020.

Still find it a little odd that the average age of people dying from Covid in UK is actually higher than the UK Life expectancy figure.

In this wave deaths (by date of death) are lagging cases (by specimen date) by 12 days almost exactly, by overlaying the two graphs from coronavirus.data.gov.uk

Excess deaths were at their peak between April 11th & 24th in the 1st wave; we went into full lockdown on March 23rd.

March 23rd is 19 days before April 11th.

I thought they try not to put people on ventilators now based on clinical experience from the first wave.
Correct - the docs are avoiding putting folk on ventilators unless they meet very specific criteria. Oxygen and CPAP if required is now preferred treatment option.

Seems obvious excess deaths is the best indicator of how bad the virus is albeit as a lagging indicator.

Denmark is recording Covid cases where people have caught the disease from farmed mink.

"Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said half the 783 human Covid-19 cases in northern Denmark "are related" to mink.
"It is very, very serious," Frederiksen said. "Thus, the mutated virus in minks can have devastating consequences worldwide."

Value of mink coats just went up.

What is getting lost here is the performance of the NHS according to that report, coming in repeatedly as the best overall healthcare system in the world.
Except at keeping you alive.

This is reductive, at best.

The NHS funding deficit has been discussed, there are fewer doctors, nurses, physios etc compared to the countries where we lag in some diseases, there is less specialist equipment available to the staff.

Where we do lag behind in outcomes, eg some cancers, the UK lags by a few percentage points, but it is improving at roughly the same rate as the other countries are improving their care. It's still not good enough, nor is it in the other countries.

We do perform better than those same countries in other aspects, we are better at treating diabetes and preventing suicides

This is a multi-faceted topic, far too complex for that facile statement you made, if you are interested in full picture look up the report called The NHS at 70 how good is the NHS, conducted by the Nuffield Trust and others.
We also massively outperform some countries we're told we lag behind in areas such as disabilities, for instance France does much better in some cancer areas but try getting a child with autism some help in France and see how that goes, Spain has some almost Chinese attitudes to those even with physical disabilities, and the Chinese term for disability translates as roughly 'refuse', as in garbage not a lack of acceptance. Nobody is getting it right overall, but overall the NHS is excellent and actually rather cheap for what it does. Yes you could make the case the NHS doesn't do what it was set up to do, the NHS has indeed progressed and now does much, much more than was ever envisaged, but if you want to cut it back then you need to say in what areas.

It's time for us to lead the world again though. A National Care System of some sort is needed, and how it interconnects to the NHS is going to be very difficult to design.

Perhaps sections of Councils and the NHS could work together rather than compete and be antagonistic together.
One joined up service with more efficiency less duplication and one coordinating managemnt structure.
You could call it the Department of Health and Social Services....... It just might work and you could get some private and third sector buy in.

Extra, every week, from the minute we stop funding the EU, I was mistaken, it's from March next year, that's when payments to the EU stop.
