I can see why that would grate. But language often veers off from logic anyway. What does the “It’s” in “It’s raining” take the place of? The sentence makes no logical sense, but conveys meaning perfectly well. The same with, “I could care less”. It conveys meaning perfectly well in context, even if it’s daft in terms of logic.

Isn't "it" "the weather" in that case? - the weather is raining, the weather is hot, the weather is snowing etc.

In French they use the "to do" verb for weather, "it does some sunshine", "it does rain", it makes sense when you hear it from birth but it sounds clunky as a learner from another language.

I'm all for evolution of language, I have no problem with using a verb as a noun*, "verbing" if you will, but "I could care less" winds me up beyond reason.

*though when someone suggested "let's beer" I felt like smashing his face in.
Am I missing something here? "It's" ins simply a contraction of "it is", in this instances, a shortening of "it is raining" to "it's raining". Not to be confused with 'its .... is raining down on ..."

Yes, "it's" is a contraction of "it is", but what is "it"?

FujiKiwi is right that "it" stands in for something - where is the ball? It is over there - "it" is the ball in this case.

I'm no English teacher and I'm from the generation that was taught grammar without being taught the mechanics of it, I have no idea of the name of tenses beyond the simple past and present, but I know what sounds right and I wouldn't know a cognate object if it offered me a pint.

When we say "it's raining", something is raining and I think it's the weather.

Same construction in
German: es regnet = it rains / it is raining
Dutch: Het regent = it rains / it is raining
Norwegian: det regner = it rains / it is raining
etc

So blame whatever grammatic pioneer devised this construction for Germanic languages way back in the day, as it presumably goes back to Proto-Germanic. "It" is essentially an empty subject.

In Japanese it is more like "rain falls / is falling" = 雨が降ってる , which does sound a little better I guess

Songs that seem to mostly comprise of the chorus endlessly on repeat. It's so dull often exacerbated by the actual chorus itself not being anything particularly novel or interesting.

Needs to be 3 and done, especially if you're sticking with a standard verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus structure.

People that only propagate the "I have a dream" version of MLK like that's the only meaningful speech he ever gave.

It's a complete insult to his legacy, he was much more than some docile, friendly black guy who wanted everyone to get on. He had really insightful things to say about poverty, imperialism, militarism, violence, the class system, the ruling classes, ignorance, financial exploitation, media manipulation, northern hypocrisy and such which are entirely overlooked.

People who refer to someone dying as having "passed".

Passed water? Passed wind?

Also referring to people who have died as "looking down on us".

If there IS as fucking afterlife, it'd have to be extremely fucking tedious for them to pay the slightest bit of attention to whatever is happening in your life...

"Each to their own" - possibly the dullest phrase in the English language.

Not to be confused with "Live and let live", the only thing that shouldn't be tolerated is intolerance, but have a discussion, be passionate about things, state your case and defend it, listen with an open mind and be prepared to be convinced.

Ah ha! You've reminded me of something -

When you leave your car in the empty area of the car park , miles away from the supermarket, and when you get back there is one other car in that area, right beside you, or two cars, one either side of you.

Apparently some people get to a stage where they can't remember where they left their car. I don't believe it.

Apparently, most people can't help it. Part of our social make-up.

But I share in the wish for capital punishment for those who take up more than one space; and those who leap nimbly out of their car, having parked in a disabled space.

Drivers who evidently never use mirrors. Slow drivers on country lanes who refuse to pull over and the let the column of traffic behind them past. Drivers who stick in the outside lane at 80 when they are not overtaking anyone. In sum, drivers.

I worked as a fencing contractor out of a farm in Sussex for a while, the farmer ran his own place as well as supplying farm services, so we had shearers, dairymen, tractor drivers etc, most of them were Kiwis.

The Kiwis who drove the tractors had competitions to see how many cars they could get tailed back behind them

Suppossed managers who can't make a decision without calling a meeting as they really are overpromoted tossers who are full of insecurities that Hans from Germany wants their job.

Got into a very tasty argument with an old boy recently who yelled at me for parking too close to him, when I’d parked in the middle of a space and he’d plonked his right on the line. Arsehole.

Vague corporate diversity pushes.

We've had an email today that states the company is lacking in diversity and the executive will be working on a plan to improve the situation.

I'd like a little bit more context than that. By what metric are we lacking in diversity? The implication is that there's a level where we're no longer lacking, what is that and how was it determined? Where do we currently sit in relation to it?
