I think, as per Nick McArdle, one FTA game per round will be on Nine GEM.

In cap cities, GEM also has a HD channel (legacy of nein needing a secondary HD channel for cricket) so good news. Re-scan your channels if needed.

New Rules for the NZ Comp:

Goal line drop outs and a captain's challenge have been announced for Super Rugby Aotearoa, just weeks out from the competition start.

The two league-style innovations will make their debut when Super Rugby trial matches are played this weekend. The competition starts a fortnight later.

Captains will have 10 seconds after a try is scored to challenge anything since the last stoppage.

But from the 75th minute, they can make a challenge whether a try is scored or not. Alleged foul play can be challenged at any time throughout a match.

An incorrect challenge at any point of the game means all future challenge opportunities are lost.

While the challenge system could heavily influence the outcome of matches, the goal line drop out has the potential to change how the game is played.

The aim is to "reward attacking teams by allowing them to build pressure and to encourage defending teams to clear the ball from their in-goal area" according to New Zealand Rugby's high performance boss Mike Anthony.

It may also put a premium on players with long drop kicks, or encourage the art over the coming years.

A goal line drop out will be ordered after an attacking player is held up in goal or knocks the ball on, and when a kick – although not a penalty kick or drop goal attempt – is grounded in goal or otherwise made dead.

Anthony said the aim was to make the game more attractive.

"We''re constantly look at how we can make the game faster and fairer…a better spectacle," Anthony said.

There had been "great support" from coaches and players for the goal line drop out.

Anthony said: "The current re-start rule of a 22-metre drop out often pushes the receiving team well back into their own half and we think teams will be more likely to counter attack from a goal line drop-out, which will in turn lead to more attacking pressure and hopefully more tries."

National referees manager Bryce Lawrence said the captain's referral would, among other things, hopefully reduce the risk of games being decided by incorrect calls.

I a bit confused how captain's challenge will work, if a ref awards a try and goes upstairs for TMO to check it, which seems almost the norm these days, will a captain still be able to challenge it, and who to? To the ones who have already given try? If he can just go up if ref doesn't go up stairs maybe, certainly got potential for more hold ups you would think.

I assume it just means the captain can ask for an already given try if he feels the ref missed something material and didn’t go upstairs. Then he could force it to go through standard TMO process.

Like cricket and tennis I guess.

The captain’s referral will be applied more broadly from the 75-minute mark in any match at which point the captain, provided they have not already lost their referral, can use it to check any referee’s decision, regardless of whether a try has been scored.

So in the dying minutes you can challenge any ref's call, not just those that directly lead to a try/foul play.

I don't mind the captain's challenge - obviously league, cricket, football, tennis etc. have already gone that way so it was somewhat inevitable.

So now I asking, what variations if any are going to be played in the TT part of comp? Play Aus variants in Aus, NZ ones in NZ? Or does it go back to International laws as it is then considered International rugby?

Not a fan of the dropout. Why, if you're hot on attack and get held up over the line, should the ball be booted 50m downfield instead of a 5 metre scrum?

Totally agree. There aren't many things rugby can learn from leeg and this certainly isn't one of them. A far better change imho would have been to retain the 5m scrum but stop the clock until the ball is cleared.

Didn’t realise Sky had paid so much for Super Rugby in the past - £20 million a year, NZ share of that pays the wages for two franchises. Amazon also in the mix it seems.

From the few articles kicking around and reading between the lines I think Sky wants to pay less, and SANZAR would rather go with a traditional broadcaster but Amazon have offered more, although they’ll have all unassigned international rights for that money not just UK.

Daugunu scored 4 tries and got red carded in his first pre-season game for the reds last year.

Ok, with the latest couple of cases of Covid in NZ, is this the end of TT comp for year? Not because the thing is getting out of hand, but it seems there going to be the odd case now and then, and if this happens and border gets closed overnight etc like what is happening now, how is anyone going to prepare for a TT comp? Surely must be time to make alternate plans for year.
