I wonder which donor or hedgie will be getting a peerage at some stage for funding this for her? Rishi of course would have bought his own!
Liz Truss has been chartering a “luxury” private helicopter as part of her leadership campaign,
Truss has taken at least two helicopter flights in the two weeks since the Tory leadership race was whittled down to a head-to-head vote between her and Rishi Sunak, according to the paper.
Sources claimed she had flown around 200 miles from Leeds to London after the first leadership hustings last week, and a similar distance to and from Exeter on Monday.

The news organisations are getting better at just calling this out now. I guess it is easier once the impacts are actually felt.

Yeah. Because in a tech age where most people run their lives on computers or mobile phones, the notion of something that might make democracy more democratic is clearly nuts.

As so often, if you can't work out why electronic voting has such significant flaws compared to traditional methods to be considered 'nuts' (let alone taking a quick look over at the States) there is no helping you.

UBS research finds cost of living means 99% of Britain's are getting poorer, energy bills going to be huge in winter, the housing market is slowing, a recession imminent.

Strap in Liz Truss, you're going to be the most hated PM in history.

I'm not suggesting it replaces the right to vote by other methods.

BofE forecasting "inflation" hitting 13%. That means RPI (which is already 12% for the year ending July) will be circa 15%.

Banking is what sprung to mind for me regarding online voting.

I think it will come eventually, we might all have our own voting app which requires verification via a text message and code input to your phone or some such. This is what happens now with my bank and paypal etc.

It can confirm by phone number, biometric and email. They can even post a code to your registered address too. Not quite sure how a paper ballot is somehow far superior.

All well and good until someone decides that selling that voting data to big tech makes sense and a new can of worms is opened.

I do, but then foreign states have I imagine less interest in my moderate incomings and outgoings than they do who runs the country. Online voting may come in time but for now it is a recipe for disaster (as the security services outline to the Tory party).

I'm torn between wanting to see this inept bunch of self-serving liars and incompetents go down in a hail of bullets, and not wanting the country to dive even deeper into the shit pan.

I suppose it is - barely - possible that Truss could grow into the role, but with only her efforts as Foreign Minister (briefly) and the leadership campaign to go on that seems a very distant possibility as of now.

Her first task will be talking tough to the EU sadly. They might even insist we implement our side of the brexit agreement.

For a lot of the two years pre referendum, the debate was pretty grown up IMO. It was only when the howling UK media and westminster politicians got involved in the last few months that it got rabid.
It really didn't. It was rabid for while before that, social media especially.

Either until a lost General Election in 2 years or if she's also kicked out / forced to resign like BoJo. Could be earlier if a successful vote of no confidence in the Government but that is unlikely with their current majority

They just can't help themselves

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-62424931
Tory leadership hopeful Liz Truss should be investigated over allegations she did not declare thousands of pounds spent on wooing MPs at a dinner event, Labour has said.

Labour says a so-called "Fizz with Liz" event at a London club last year may have breached spending rules for MPs.

The Independent said £3,000 was spent and paid by club owner Robin Birley.

MPs must declare hospitality worth over £300, but Ms Truss's team says she did not organise the event.

A spokesperson for Ms Truss said: "A declaration would only need to made if there was a benefit to Liz, or it was above the threshold for individual declarations for MPs register of interests."
Sounds to me like it was both, to her benefit, & above the threshold ?

In my experience it was always there and really ramped when the conversations went from "how would this work in an independent Scotland" to "I'm voting for/against it because..." and people realised the people they were debating qith were of an opposing view.

People weren't being told to "fuck off to England then" or being called "natsis" because Westminster politicians started to have their say or media ramped up one way or the other.

It's an emotive subject for many and the debate was always going to disintegrate into shite.

That's general SM accounts though. I've seen supposedly sensible people that I know show a nasty side I never would have thought they had. Thankfully they were school acquaintances I was happy to bin and not have to think of them again.

Being given abuse outside the polling station was a new low too.

That is what these trolls and fake accounts do push extremism and encourage nasty sides in people. It worked. Your acquaintances might have some views but thought them socially unacceptable but then all of a sudden hundreds of "people" online have them. You could see the pattern in fake accounts and trolls pushing extreme right and left views relentlessly on twitter. Which encouraged others to hound moderates. Bloody easy on the Ukraine war to spot them posting responses to the likes of PhillipsPOBrien.

She has explained that one, she wants to borrow more and become more like Japan.

Nobody has asked if the rising interest rates wants to make her review that plan.

I'll come clean and admit I haven't been paying attention to any details other than who is in the running because the choice is like being asked if you'd rather be kicked the face or the nuts.

The first answer to googling "Japan debt and deficit" returned this

Japan Debt Problem
We estimate that general government debt/GDP reached 248% in the fiscal year ending March 2022 (FY21). This is the highest of any investment-grade sovereign – Italy, with the second highest ratio, stands at around 150%

I've always maintained that the Tories are the economically illiterate party.

BTW, UK debt peaked at around 240% of GDP in the late 1940s, but there was an obvious reason for that. It fell sharply thereafter until around 1990.

During that time the UK built the NHS and the Welfare State whilst paying back debt to the US.

These people want to increase debt whilst taking no measures to ameliorate 12 years of Tory austerity.

Why would any sane person want the UK economy to become more like Japan?

It was the second largest economy 30 years ago. Crippled growth since the 90s. They have tried everything QE -ve interest rates and are still fucked.

An aging workforce, limited immigration to make up the shortfall. Cultural and corporate conservatism that leads to lack of innovation.

Aside from limited immigration (as of now the Tories want to cut it) is this not the UK?
