Really positive numbers coming out of the UK still
Over the last 7 days:
Tests conducted increased by 6.2%
Positive tests returned decreased by 6.5%
Deaths within 28 days decreased by 6.9%
Patients admitted decreased by 21.3%
Vaccinations continuing at around 3.5 million per week. 33.8 million people now have at least 1 dose, of which 12.9 million have had their second dose as well. According to the vaccine calculators, an 18 year old should expect to get their first jab no later than 2nd July at the current rate
People aged 42 and over in England are now able to book their Covid-19 jab, the health secretary has said.
Those who are due to turn 42 by 1 July are also eligible to make an appointment under the latest extension of the vaccine rollout.
Starting to get a little bit excited now. The age seems to be coming down fairly swiftly, so those of us just into our 30s shouldn't have to wait too much longer.

I'm thinking I can lock in my next blood donation appointment now. Supposed to wait 8 days after vaccination according to website but the welcome booklet referenced two weeks, and would be donating c 10th July, and working under assumption second dose would be within earliest late Jul/Aug.

Was due to get 2nd jab on Friday but surgery texted this morning to cancel.
Thinking it was an issue with Pfizer supply I went on the booking site and got an appointment for tomorrow lunchtime.
Also a large number of people skipping jab 2 apparently
I wondered if the take up for the 2nd jab would fall off in the UK.
Overall the % of people get vaxxed in the UK has been very encouraging - despite the AZ blood clot scares - I think we were fortunate that we'd done 20m+ by the time the scares surfaced - people could see the risks were tiny and the benefits huge. We'll have to see how we get on as we move on to the younger groups that are less at risk.
We're already spending a lot of money on getting the under 40s/30s to take the jab when offered. Very pro-active campaigning going on
I was thinking there isn't much incentive for the 18-24 bracket to have it and then I played golf with a Uni student that reckoned he and at least 4 of his mates had had Covid and developed Arythmia as a result of exercising with the virus when they were feeling fine??

Just tried googling around to figure out what I read and it must have been the Ohio State one around heart damage which time has replaced with lung damage in my memory.

Nevertheless, it's led me down some interesting rabbit holes. He's trying to argue that the guy who invented PCR, says it can't be used to detect viruses. When I present him with scientific papers written by the inventor of PCR, using PCR to detect HIV, he's just handwaving it...
I console myself with the thought that maybe someone on the fence is reading this, and coming down the correct side.

Nah,. the guy who invented PCR didn't think that HIV lead to AIDS. He's dead now though (conspiratorially just before covid came about).

Vaccinated people don't get full on infections so they don't spray the air with many virus as they don't have them in high numbers.

That's pretty much accurate on howvaccination helps prevent transmission. How much of a viral load you're exposed to at first can make a big difference. Just think about exponential growth, and how big a difference starting at 2 instead of 16 ( assuming a doubling growth) at step one, once we get a few more steps along the line ( bodies reaction time to fight infection, which is also shorter for a vaccinated person). If one vaccinated person passes or onto another, they may not even reach a point of being infectious to others.

I find that it's not possible to have any meaningful debate with pro-plaguers.
They are always right and nothing you can say, no evidence you present will convince them otherwise.
Just had a conversation where it was claimed that the crisis in India was purely psychological and driven by an irrational fear of the 'flu. People are going to hospital, not because they are ill, but because they have been told how deadly covid is and fear has manifested in psychological symptoms.
It's just not possible to discuss this rationally with some people.

I can get the argument that a game a day encourages people to stay at home and gives something to look forward to. Really should have held it in the UAE again.
Seems mad to think of the crowds they had in for a couple of the tests, just a couple of months ago.

I'm not subscribing to see the article, but the table in the twitter graph, whilst absolutely suggesting that we've undercounted covid deaths before, still shows a significant drop of deaths in general, and certainly covid deaths, after the second wave and vaccines were being used widely.
Can you give a breakdown on why they think it won't be as normal as we hope?

I don't have subscriber access so can't read nay more than is on Twitter, but it seems based solely on the recruitment of "Covid Marshalls" means no end in sight to social distancing, plus "Legal powers to impose domestic Covid-19 restrictions have already been extended by Parliament until September"

Anyone who thinks we're not going to have some kind of restrictions through the winter is fooling themselves. However we'll be a lot closer to what most people would consider normal. I reckon we'll be asked, at various times, to distance / wear masks / not visit other households, on the basis of local or national outbreaks. Until we know just what effect the vaccine is having on transmission and illness, going full on 'knock yourself out, ye've been jagged' would be a bit foolish. However, in saying that, Johnson is a fool, so who knows.

Well I'm hoping that we will be able to ditch compulsory wearing of masks completely before too long, but I doubt it'll happen in June. September is a possibility but we're still dependent on the vaccine covering all bases with regard to reduction rapid spread of mutated COVID versions.

That's what I'm thinking. It would be foolish, especially with new strains, to simply assume come the winter we're in the clear. But that doesn't mean that life won't be getting to something close to normal soonish.
What a crazy year and a half it's been. And to be honest, whilst clearly pandemics were feared (and we'd had a few practice runs), even this one has been "relatively" light compared to what it could have been. Can you imagine if it had evolved to the British or Brazilian strain very early on? With the additional transmission and effecting the young to a greater degree. How many health services would have collapsed etc? It was very close to a huge global disaster, and even now is verging on it, but could have so easily been so much worse.

More post vaccine health concerns, this time with the Pfizer jab in Israel.
