I think stronger winds are a bit of a leveler. I think from previous regatta ETNZ are better than the other teams in the light airs.

Think it'll be LR making it thru to final.

It’s all one design isn’t it? So the only difference is the configuration on the day.

And of course the sailing skills.

A “mighty bang” rang out across the Team New Zealand base after their America’s Cup boat was dropped to the ground in a post-race accident on Friday (NZ time).

Speaking to Stuff, Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton said the crane that was lowering the boat onto its cradle failed, dropping the AC75 almost 7m and leaving what appeared to be a crack on the hull.

“I was only just saying we had a great day to someone when I heard this mighty bang and the crane has dropped the boat,” Dalton said.

“We can't move it right now to assess it any more because we need a new crane and we certainly can't trust this one.”

Not really registering yet - I think it will pick up if they get to the LV Cup. They seem to have an edge over the Swiss at the moment, particularly downwind.

The other semifinal looks really tight - Italians to shade it

I'd agree with this. Almost nobody outside of sailing clubs knows it's on. Being on TNT Sports doesn't help, not least because it didincentivises the FTA channels ftom featuring it on the news.

I am still sceptical. I match raced dinghies and yachts for 20+ years and they just seem to bang the corners focusing purely on speed and wind shifts. There are no upwind tacking duels and downwind jybing and covering where there are close quarters battles, shouting, sweat, tears, spinnaker handling and potential contacts, all the traditional skills of sailing.

It all just feels a bit impersonal.

I agree, these foils feel like Formula E where the cars just hum around the track with no drama or little chance for a mistake.

The UK have a yacht in the race skippered by one of England’s favourite sportsmen but the BBC do not have anything on the America’s Cup on their website.
