To answer the last point first - I'm only speaking for me here. I'm sharing my thoughts on it. For me, pure and outright insult, without any guile or wit to it, isn't satire, its just behaving like a cunt.

As Bimbo said above, this is Charlie Hebdo's schtick and has been for a long time, which if true (I know nothing of the magazine tbf) is fair enough. I don't have to like it though and I certainly don't think it is generating positive debate - in this instance at least. It's as cancerous to society (in its own unique way I guess) than the worst demagoguery of FOX News.

As for over egging the example - I really don't think I am. As I said previously, I think its on a par with deliberately spilling pigs blood outside a Synagogue. And no, I don't think there is worse stuff routinely said about Christians, except maybe in the eyes of the fundie Christians (Having said that I'm sure we can probably dig up an example or two).

Just as an example - would a cartoon of a purely blank cell, except for a single speech bubble saying "Whats going on here?" and the caption "Mohammad caught in a blizzard" * have not stoked the same debate, while suitably inflaming passions, without blatantly insulting the adherents of the entire faith?

My real concerns here are that I genuinely believe that we can only eradicate extremism through logic and understanding, and both of those things go out the window the instant you call the other person a cunt! And without sounding too condescending or painting an entire faith with a broad brush, Islam is too fucking immature at the moment to have the conversation in the same way we can about Christianity. So yeah, a little more of the kid gloves, for now at least. We must engage with the more moderate adherents, not marginalise them.

I fear that taking a more severe approach to the issue is just playing directly into the extremists hands (frankly I'm not just taking about Islamic extremists here) and deepening the cultural divide.

Yes. To couch the issue in those terms - unequivocally yes!

Of course South Africa has a huge amount of racial issues and I have no doubt that racially motivated murders happen all the time. I understand that white farmers are rightly fearful and I am not trying to suggest that it is not a deeply disturbing issue.

I also know that the murder rate of white farmers is not out of proportion with the murder rate across South Africa (maybe it is compared to the murder rate of other whites - but is that itself not part of the problem?).

Is there any evidence at all that these murders are a part of an organised systematic approach to exterminate white people from South Africa? To couch the issue in those terms is utterly ludicrous and plays into very disturbing, hugely racist white supremacy theories elsewhere in the world (and obviously in SA as well).

Just as the Trumpists use of scurrying rat imagery when depicting caravans of immigrants brought up disturbing connotations it the Nazi's Juden propoganda, White Genocide is a full blown racial extremist white supremacist theory designed as a call to arms and to draw racial battle lines.

I am sure the fact that there is no evidence that as a farmer his murder was at no higher rate than normal will be of enormous comfort to Brendin Horner

I agree murders on farms is happening less than in previous years, this of course could be due to the fact there are less farmers left to kill...
