You talking about Russell? I think he was claiming for an earlier infringement. (FWIW, I thought it was a nailed on penalty try)

Possibly but speaking as a ref, we take a very dim view of players trying to talk about a different incident to the one we're dealing with now. Nine times out of ten, it's just whinging/deflection/distraction.

Not a penalty try for me. At best Nash only had a 50% chance of getting the ball.

It was more VDM giving the TJ spray that I was referring to. Couldn't remotely claim to be hard done by and he still went and did that.

There was a man/woman in his/her 80/90s wearing a pink cowboy hat and a short dress?

Bit worrying that Finn passed his HIA but, in Townsend's words "wasn't aware what was going on" and was considered not fit to carry on. It suggests the HIA isn't rigorous enough, but well done to the Scotland management for making that call.

Given that VdM, who took him out, proceeded to shepherd the ball over the dead ball line at reduced pace, I can't see how he wouldn't have been able to touch it down if VdM were not there? And as I understand it you are supposed to judge it as if the offending player were not there.

Agree. There was no defender between the ball and the attacker. Penalty try , no doubt. Coming from a neutral and a DvdM supporter.

Wasn't revealed till after the match:

"Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend later revealed that co-captain Russell passed his HIA but the national team medics were uneasy about him continuing.

"Finn fine," Townsend said. "He passed his HIA but our staff sensed he wasn't totally aware of what was going on, so we made the call to not put him back on."

Nash was ahead but his last kick skewed way off to the left bringing Jordan closer to the angle of where the ball was rolling.

For a PT decision van der Merwe is out of the equation but any other defender has to be considered.

It's a chase down between 2 players for a rolling ball. I would agree with the 4 officials that it's not probable a try would be scored, there's too many other moving parts to make that assessment.

This is consistent with most other PT decisions where the PT will usually only be given where there is no other defender to consider once you have taken out the offending player. Even if it would leave a one on one where you might expect the attacking player would be able to step the last man and get in, refs won't guess what might happen there.

Yeah I don't think it was a penalty try either - could have been had the bounce been more favourable, but it wasn't. At best it was a 50/50 chance he would have gotten there and that by definition isn't a probable try scoring opportunity.

sockwithaticket wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 11:07 pm Occasionally we get young lads like Pollock who are so undeniably good that their clubs give them the keys to the kingdom at a young age, but there are plenty who just disappear at Prem level when they've been excelling as U20s. It shouldn't be so big a gap and if it is then clubs need to get better at bridging it.

Thinking of a position of low depth like second row, why is Alex Groves now 24 and essentially a ghost? Nominally he's signed up at Sale, but it's practically impossible to find any appearance info on him. Lewis Chessum has 12 appearances for Tigers since 2022 and now at 21 he's being loaned to a Japenese team. That's a cool experience for him to have, so maybe he'd have gone anyway, but why is it so hard for him to get game time here?

There are all sorts of factors that go into whether players kick on, but we see time and time again, whole swathes of names from the U20s never really kick on to Premiership level, let alone anything higher.
He played his first game back at the weekend after time off for open heart surgery, without which he might actually have wound up as a Ghost:

It’s only the Irish that get worked up. Every year like clockwork the Irish media concoct some weird narrative around Scotland saying we are going to beat them and how terribly disrespectful we are. It’s really odd

Example A above, posted by an Irisher. I’ve heard literally no one here talking about that, I didn’t even hear any boo’s at the game - there may of been some but it wasn’t a cacophony

Got to admit I don't particularly mind the guy, get the impression he takes a bit of a dim view of your more rock star type player (of which Scotland do have a few). And of course the Glasgow/Munster thing that has build up of the last decade or so.

Although in fairness I did enjoy a few years back when the captains were asked what their favourite anthem were outside of their own and he said Flower of Scotland, nearly cracking his own teeth while saying it.
