Most do not in France in public transport this week I was nearly the only one I saw in the train there was a few more in the metro but a small minority.

Add to that the idiots who still wear it on their chin

Just came back from Exuma, for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic I spent 10days without wearing a mask or even thinking about covid, what a great feeling.

To go there you need a PCR test and after every 5 days an antigen one, employees are tested every week.

Bit of a Jubilee blip or start of next wave? Hard to tell since we have almost dismantled any early warning testing system and have to rely on the retrospective ONS data, we do have hospitalisations and deaths data but by the time these start flashing red it is almost too late. Our ex banker and non-dom Health Secretary Javid said 'covid was now endemic, like the flu and we have the tools to fight it', was he right?

With the rise in cases it doesn't. But the govt seems to be taking the resistance is futile approach now..

Only Health services have mandatory masks in France (pharmacy, doctor surgery, physio, hospital...).
Still annoyed they removed it in public transport you're basically way too close to too many people for too long and in the carriage I was in (fully seated and about 10 standing) there was barely 5 of us wearing a mask.
slightly more in the metro (but there you're even closer).

Still see them about on public transport when I have occasion to use it. I mask up, especially on the tube.

Well 26 months in it’s finally got me. Blocked nose and a bit of a cough but main symptom is knackeredness. Touch wood my advanced age and well controlled asthma aren’t going to make matters worse.

Haven't reached the magic age for the fourth one - 75? Last jab was end of November.

Sitting in hospital with my mother. The lady next to us has had Covid. Now recovering on oxygen. But she sounds a mess. Oxygen levels haven't been above 89. Each morning I am surprised to see her still alive. Quite a large lady. Lost her husband to Covid and her three sons! I was going to say what an unlucky family, but I suspect their physical condition is to blame..
I don't know how the nurses do their job with a smile with such ill people all around.

A month after collapsing from a blood clot. It's been a long slow recovery. And not out of the woods yet. But now that Covid rules have changed and I can spend all day with her. She has gone from not eating and drinking and being on a drip... And being told she was near the end... To eating and drinking again and off her drip. Still very frail though. But she's fighting.

It does all feel a sad way to finish your life. In discomfort and surrounded mostly by strangers..

I sincerely hope that our Health Secretary is keeping an eye on this. His predecessor's promised "ring fence" was a miserable failure

Covid outbreaks in care homes rise for third week in a row
Covid outbreaks in care homes have risen for a third consecutive week and hospital numbers are continuing to rise, according to the latest government figures.

The data, from the UK health security agency (UKHSA), come as health experts warn that nearly one in six people aged 75-plus have not had a vaccine dose in the last six months.

The number of suspected Covid outbreaks last week in all settings in the UK was 331, up from 222 the previous week and the highest since the end of April. There were 245 outbreaks detected in care homes.

The UKHSA also found the rate of hospital admissions of people with virus among over 85s was 69.3 per 100,000 last week - up from 52.1.

Well this is a surprise is it not? ONS reporting 2.3 million with covid in UK due to spread of BA4 and BA5. Reinfection rates are high. With these levels of infection expect more disruption to commerce, services and in particular the NHS as more staff go off ill. Whilst we will avoid way below the level of deaths as in first few waves thanks to vaccinations (although we still have 13 million unvaccinated in the UK) and better treatment pathways, I would expect a not insignificant % of those currently infected to develop long covid and stay off work longer. Not good for the economy. With case numbers increasing in many European countries it looks like we still have a pandemic folks!

Just had my first dose. No more than an annoying summer cold for 3 or 4 days but when I started back to work I found myself wiped out after about 4 hours and then back in the house snoozing on the couch which I never do. It lasted another week or so until I now feel back to normal. My wife had been through her third dose and this one has been the worst, and she is still unable to do much after nearly 4 weeks.

Interesting and sensible article and good explanation of what we have still to come. Hearing next variant BA2.12.1 is highly infectious and will lead to yet another wave this summer/early autumn, however it looks like vaccines will continue to provide some level of protection but won't prevent folk going off ill and impact on wider economy and NHS.
