I hate the self-scans as they make me look an idiot every time, constant red warning lights and an exasperated spotty teenaged ex-checkout boy trying to work out what I've fucked up now.

A particular failing is taking the wrong pudding for the meal for a tenner deal and wondering why the discount doesn't come up. That always takes a good 5 minutes to sort out, which at least lets me loudly query why they'd put the pudding on the same shelf if it wasn't part of the deal.

Yeah, they are the perfect way to strike back against shrinkflation and price gouging if so inclined...

Supermarkets have taken the rise of self checkouts as an opportunity to shred staffing numbers, so there's basically no one around to monitor what people are doing.
I hate those close circuit cameras all the supermarkets have focused permanently on the self service check outs to make sure folk aren't trying to cheat the system! Surely we should be allowed a little personal freedom and trust!

It's a nightmare waiting for the authorisation when you swing by after work to grab a couple of tinnies of Tennent's Super.

A chum was senior in Sainsburys when they came in. They were very worried about the potential for abuse, but found that the levels of 'wastage' went down. It turned out that on the one hand the general public are actually very honest, on the other, a lot of check out operators were actually quite poor at making sure everything scanned, and that a hitherto unsuspected number of check out operators were working scams of various kinds.

Yeah, despite what I wrote above you could probably count the number of items I haven't paid for on one hand and two of them were down to absentmindedness.

I can't fathom why poorly paid and under-motivated staff might not have been paying attention to what they were doing or actively working against a company...

A mate and I drove round France for a few months after we finished school. We went into a supermarket one day for a big shop and the young check out assistant just smiled and charged us 2 Euros (or whatever it was at the time), went back the next day to check it out and happened again. So kept going back, even if it was a considerable drive - extended our trip by about 6 weeks I reckon.

There's a Reddit Tesco community where the staff - mostly young - are constantly posting about poor pay, conditions and bullying/negligent management ( and tbf how badly/rudely many of the customers treat them). Needless to say also claims of bad practice in food storage/movement and H&S breaches. Granted it's a huge company and this is only a small minority of staff posting, and perhaps a minority of stores too, but it sounds like a shit place to work and fairly glad I don't have a Tesco's in my town even while it may not be that different for other supermarkets.

I gave up shopping at Tesco New Malden after it got done for HSE violations due to a rodent infestation in the stores.

Also my roommate at college worked in Sainsbury's and said he'd never buy mince from a supermarket ever again.

Years ago I visited a margarine factory in Purfleet for work. It was the most disgusting place. It made Stork margarine I think. Ships would dock and pipe in vegetable oils in bulk and these were full of all sorts of shit from wherever they came from. It was then filtered, treated, coloured, additives added, etc. I came out after a day stinking of oil and when I took off my shirt the collar was covered in grease. I never ate stork margarine again. Visited a few other food and drink manufacturers and the vast majority put me off their products for life, the amount of shit and chemicals added to over processed crap was just astonishing.

Years ago, I spent a bit of time working in the KP Crisps factory on Teesside. On the plus side, the hygiene standards were high and the crisps when they were still warm from the fryers were genuinely delicious. However, I didn't eat crisps again for a couple of years because of those days spent breathing the flavour dust which got everywhere. I also came to appreciate the difference between a potato crisp made from real potato and the ones made from potato starch, which is a pretty unappetising white powder before they fry it and apply all the flavourings.

Sorting out the Freeview channels to remove all the crud like QVC that I never watch. Only for it to do an automatic update a few days later

And if I turn off auto update, up pops a message to tell me to retune as new channels have been found, which are invariably shit shopping crap...

Twitter or X changed to dark mode without me doing anything.

A Google on how to change back comes up with
Go to Settings and Privacy, which is under Settings & Support. Tap Accessibility, Display, and Languages and open the Display menu. Select Dark Mode and change it from Use Device Settings to On. Choose between Dim and Lights Out under the Dark Theme section.
There is no fucking settings and privacy options on X

This happens all the fucking bastarding time with online shite, the tedious ten minute videos of how to fix crap that changed without you doing anything don't work. Same with the Apple or Microsoft or Virgin or what ever the fuck. It doesn't work.
It did the last time I used it it worked and I did fuck all to it.

This would not be acceptable in any other industry, but the IT bods say, oh well, it's easy, just configure X, reboot into safety mode and search for string 320ytz.

Fuck off, you shitehawks.

Well it's probably a good thing that I only read tweets and not do any of my own, and I eventually found how to return to default mode.

But the wider point was really about how IT was supposed to aid and make life easier, it mostly leads to a lot of frustration - I recently bought a new printer rather than fight with the existing one again and installing the new one was a bastard of a job

In my jobs over my entire life, if I supplied something, goods or service, that didn't work in the same manner that IT doesn't work I'd be ashamed of myself for a start and then probably not employed again ever

Basically responsible for obesity in developed nations and all the associated diseases is the food industry and the shit they add to food to make it as addictive as possible. I doubt you could find a loaf of bread in a supermarket that wouldn't contain some shit. Something like 60% of our diet on average is ultra processed food (upf). The food industry about 50 years ago realised that to make more money in developed countries they needed to get people to over eat. So they have iterated their concoctions to make them as addictive as possibly while subbing out real food with cheap shit (modern equivalent of stuffing sausages with sawdust - though that might be unfair on the fibre and nutrients sawdust contains). They've also been massive misleading pricks on stuff like calorie counting which is mostly complete bullshit. Famine in good omens if you've read it nails the food industry.

Some people are shift workers with a limited window to do things, I get that, but the worst offenders near me are just early risers who don't seem to give a fuck about anyone else. I'm generally up no later than 9 at weekend anyway, so it's not like they're rousing me from my slumber, there's just something about Sunday mornings that feels like they should be genteel, quiet and relaxing if you're fortunate enough not to be at work.
Feeling your pain Bro, our next door neighbours, both retired, not a sound all week, Sat & Sun morning comes and it's like a F1 starting grid over there, hedge trimmers, mower, and blowers revving up and being used for a couple of hours. They started at 7am, Sunday, which is allowed under NSW law - yes looked it up, and are still going full throttle. The bogan across the road has already screamed out to them to "shut the frack up", surprisingly the C-nuke wasn't uttered, must point out to him that this is completely un-Australian.

Wife and I went to Tesco last night. When we left, security alarms went off. It was us !!! We had bought some lamb and apparently it needed some sort of further scanning procedures. WTF. We usually buy meet from local butchers and will continue to do so if this is Tesco's normal practice.

My Tesco has metal type cages around every bottle of spirits, pain in the arse at the checkout. However cashiers said it doesn't deter the shoplifters they just grab a few bottles and walk out bold as brash and don't get stopped. You have to wonder why they spend so much on a deterrent that doesn't work?

We had bought some lamb and apparently it needed some sort of further scanning procedures. WTF. We usually buy meet from local butchers and will continue to do so if this is Tesco's normal practice.
My Tesco has metal type cages around every bottle of spirits, pain in the arse at the checkout. However cashiers said it doesn't deter the shoplifters they just grab a few bottles and walk out bold as brash and don't get stopped. You have to wonder why they spend so much on a deterrent that doesn't work?
It may not stop professional thiefs but it does stop opportunistic theft. An awful lot of security works on the basis that stopping the pros is well nigh impossible but they do stop even enthusiastic amateurs.

In Memorium,

So. Farewell then
Ford Galaxy.

You have transported us all
For many years without complaint
And at little expense.

For a family car you were the absolute best.
Less so at the Ministry of Transport test.

RIP.

Nice ripe avocados..place on scale..search for item...carrots..sorted...

We don’t work for them so why are we expected to perform to their standards. If we get it wrong, accidentally or not, take it out of what you’re saving.

This is a sad story. I'm currently having to take our car to the local garage every 3 weeks to get the clutch bled or it becomes undrivable. Been waiting for 3 months for the dealership to have a space to sort it but it's probably time it goes

eh? if you're having to bleed the clutch then it's a simple hydraulic / fluid issue. Either the clutch master cylinder or the slave is leaking. Back in the day we'd strip them down and replace seals. Now, you're probably looking at a simple replacement. It's a simple job and the outfit that are doing the bleeding for you are capable of doing it. Bugger waiting for thedealership Slick, just get it done and enjoy the car without worrying about replacing it. Unless there are other issues then a simple job like that should be relatively cheap and you'll be motoring happily into sunsets.

I was just looking at beginning of this thread and saw some moans about dogs etc. Meant to ask, when I was in UK on holiday end of last tear, I was gobsmacked at the number of people with dogs in pubs and shops etc. What the f*** is that about? Loved my holiday over there , but was just wondered why people thought it good idea to go to pubs with a dog, and then let it lie on flooor in samll bar so you had to step over it etc? Same as in shops.

Impressive! Yes that seems to be the issue. Trouble is that the local garage don’t want to do it, it’s a Hyundai and they have said they don’t know anything about the car and are not confident- all the garages in the area are constantly packed.

bugger...

the slave cylinder is inside the clutch bell housing. If it's leaking, there's a fair chance fluid will have affected the clutch plate. Apparently it's a common issue and usually means replacing the clutch along with the cylinder. It means removing the transmission to get at everything. I saw a quote on a forum for around 900Euro all up.

Alternatively, it could be the master cylinder at fault which would be a more simple repair. If you can access the underside of the car you might be able to see any fluid leak signs somewhere around the bottom of the transmission bell housing. Otherwise have a look at the clutch pedal and the pushrod that attaches to it. If there's fluid or damp signs on that you might be in luck and only have to replace the master.

Sorry mate but it's not likely to be the simple option.

I think you must have found the same google search as the local mechanic, he didn’t fancy it at all 😂. I’m kind of resigned to a new clutch which I really don’t need
