I shut windows blinds and curtains from about 10am onwards when the back and side of the house get full on sunshine until sunset. It helps but still the house gets a steady rise in temperature indoors until the evening. Then the outdoor temperature is falling too slowly to make much difference by bedtime even with the windows as wide open throughout the house as there's little air movement. Normally you could expect a good fall in temperature and a bit of breeze to help out by evening but not so in this spell of weather. Portable AC would help I guess but with three rooms to try and keep cool it's not really worth it for the occasional summer blast.

Roll on Friday and more normal summer conditions!

Yeah I've all the windows open, but there's barely any breeze outside, so it's not pushing any fresh air through.

Think I'll hang damp towels around the place, latent heat might be my friend.

No breeze here either, it's only just got more cool outside than it is inside. Opened the windows expecting a bit of relief but nothing. I've got tilt and swing windows and they're all fully open. Yes they retain heat too well, but for best part of 7/8 months of the year our houses have to keep out cold and damp, and so there is also an emphasis on home insulation and heating systems rather than cooling. At least that runs true for older brick houses like mine, I don't know if newer houses have a better balance, maybe newer "luxury" apartments might have AC in the building.

If it's any consolation, Aussie houses depend on AC for heating as well.

They are usually draughty and cheap - which belies their cost

Downstairs was 33 degrees yesterday @ 20:40

Thankfully I spend most of the evening in the garden looking for shooting stars and watching a far off thunderstorm.

Met office saying the South of England due for thunderstorms tonight and temps dropping into mid 20s tomorrow.

I am almost as excited as when they forecast snow.

Yes, please! Thunderstorms a possibility later, according to BBC weather, but still only <20% chance of precipitation.

Here on the south coast the breeze dropped a few days ago and I have been feeling like I'm in a Ballard or Camus novel.

Oddly it wasn't that hot yesterday - though it was muggy. Today is probably warmer because the sun is shining. A very comfortable 20 degC at the moment (though as I'm working I'm happy with that). Very glad I'm not sweltering with you poor sods down south!

Annoyingly the lightning storms last night (which caused a power cut at some point during the night) seem to have thrown off the grid voltage (or that is my assumption), so my solar PV won't connect. Bouncing around 256 to 263 volts. Hopefully the Hydro board can sort it, as I'm missing out on feed-in tariff!

And 34 °C already. Wondering how this spell compares with 1976...which was a long hot summer but don't know if very high temps were as sustained as this over several days.

At 33, but I was really fricken hoping for a storm by now !!!

It was quite amazing. Had a wee dram and sat by the window for a couple of hours.

I've seen a few flooded bits and I see they are blaming the train derailment in Aberdeen on a landslide caused by the rain so not all beer and skittles.

Apparently there were 16 consecutive days when the temperatures was over 30, but the maximum reached on any one day was 35C. Most days were between 30 and 32. So the temps are a bit higher this years, but not yet as sustained.

There was also almost no rain at all between June and August, leading to a severe drought.

That's what I remember mainly, the drought. I think we will have 8 days of unusual heat before it peters out, so probably a notable heatwave but shorter than 1976. Like last summer we've had the short bursts of extreme heat but a lot of mediocre windy, cloudy and coolish weather for the majority of it. Which is why it's a struggle I guess for us to deal with, the contrasts and sudden swings.

Gone a bit cloudy now and the temp has dropped - the end is nigh!

Met Office are tweeting that 34.6C has been reached at St James Park - which "apparently" is the first time since "at least" 1961 that we have had 6 consecutive days above 34C

No, it was very dry but not with sustained heat. I do remember the day they came to fit my new gas boiler was well over 30 °C though and they had great fun drilling a hole in the brick wall for the flue in full sunshine...

We just had a 20 minute hail thunder storm. Incredibly sudden start and so strong it blew half the windows shut and drenched anything in the immediate vicinity.Now the bastard thing's stopped and it feels more humid than before!

We had a 20 minute or so rain shower. Nothing too heavy and it’s now passing on by. Humidity. Fk me.
