I watched Dune today in IMAX. Was damn good. The type of movie that looks fantastic on a big screen like IMAX in my opinion. Tv size might not do it full justice. To bad we have to wait 2 years for Part 2. Had a friend with me that are not really a scifi fan, but she absolutely loved it. Its great they did not try and compress the whole book into 2.5 hours, even if we have to wait to see the next part.

Movie theaters are shut here but I acquired a link to watch the Dune movie
If you are keen, try

Decent quality?
I watched the 1st 5 mins and the quality appeared to be very good. Not sure how they get away with streamimg new releases like that - but I really want to see it at the cinema anyway. I was just curious to see what they had.

Cheers. Sick of paying the prices at the cinema and folk not being able to sit on their arse for 2 hours.

I know Villeneuve is flavour of the month and I do enjoy his stuff.
I really wanted to like the movie but it was just a bit boring.
I kind of preferred the lynch movie for all its flaws...

Halfway through The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu. Decent, but there's a few times I've cocked a metaphorical eyebrow at some of the science proposition.
Just got through the first few chapters because it was free on Kindle with Amazon Prime.
Those chapters are a completely batshit description of the Cultural Revolution so I'm sort of surprised it was approved by the Chinese censors - on that basis I'm thoroughly amused so far. Waiting for the batshit SF to start soon.

I saw it yesterday. It's well executed and I look forward to part 2.
On the plus side, the story is handled well and it does a good job of filling in the backstory with dialogue between the characters and actual acting. Given the complexity of the book this is quite an achievement.
On the downside, Both visually and the soundtrack seem like Villeneuve had a load of leftovers from 2049 that he was determined to use up. All beige and grey filters and loud noises. I found myself missing the look of the Lynch version.

I also saw it yesterday at a disappointing cinema, I might IMAX it soon. Found myself quibbling a little bit with some of the choices made in terms of character portrayals + scenes being cut, but honestly it'd be at least 1.5 films worth just to get to that point.

I IMAX'ed it in Kingston. It's definitely a movie that benefits from it, particularly the sound.
Re: what gets cut and left in. There are always quibbles for people who have read the book. During the escape through the storm scene I was thinking - "you could have cut most of this and included <xxx> scene" but in generalI was pleased with what was included which was a big issue with the Lynch version.

Cutting out half the shots of Zendaya would give him about 20 minutes to play with...
Seriously though, they spent an awful lot of time focusing on her in his dreams but I felt they really rushed his apocalyptic visions of the future, making it quite confusing for anyone who hadn't read the book like the people I went with.
Some things I can totally understand leaving out for now or ignoring. Yueh's storyline and the mystery over the betrayal are bloody difficult to add in in the allotted time, and I'm not sure it adds to the story that much. Ditto Feyd-Rautha's early role. But I do think not quite enough time was spent on explaining Beast Rabban and the general difference in the Harkonnen approach vs the Atreides, the general concept of the Landsraad, the fact that Arrakis was a trap that they were knowingly walking into, etc. Losing the dinner scene means losing a prime opportunity to show Jessica at her best, and she came across as a little too weepy and frightened in the film; you also lose a sense of the greater intrigues at play with the smuggler, the water seller, etc - even if those don't go anywhere beyond that point, it still shows how the Atreides act and it hints at wider plots within plots.
Anyway, I've booked to see one of the final IMAX showings this week.

I'm up to episode 7 of Foundation; & I shudder to think how much money they wasted on this dross.
Sure it looks pretty; but there's no discernible plot; & I don't even know why they paid the family for the rights; when all they kept was a title, & a few character names.
They have three plot threads; the emperor; the action hero; & the seer; & I don't give a shit if any of them live or die; in fact I want them all to die; & soon; so they stop boring me to death.
Fuck me.. what a waste of money.

I bailed at episode 4 or 5 I think. The first 2 eps were promising but I agree with everything you say. Boring, ridiculous sh!te....and that's the best bits.
It's like they bought the rights just to have the name 'Foundation' so they lure an audience in.
"Hey guys I think we need more gun fights and people dressed in leather."
"But that's not following the books storyline sir."
"There was a book? Whatever, let's re write it with more battles."

It looks amazing but they obviously ran out of money for writers and plot.
watched ep 9 last night. I have tried really hard to like foundation but the end of ep9 was completely batshit.

Book 8 of "The Expanse" series (Tiamat's Wrath) and we're finally getting away from GoT type factions fighting each other ( not that it's been uninteresting) and getting into more intriguing territory of "alien magic". Was hoping the price for "Leviathan Falls" would drop before I got to reading it but it's still at the new release cost....
Anyway this is kind of funny

Just over halfway through 'Inhibitor Phase', which is Reynolds' return to the Revalation Space scenario.
I liked the book at first, but am finding it of slowly diminishing appeal the further I progress. It may yet ramp up to a gripping climax.
Reynold's has a history of interspersing wonderful sections of hard SF with very mundain interludes.

Finally got around to watching the final episode of this season of Boba Fett, & by God does it make a difference when the writers actually put some effort into developing characters first, & then doing the SFX second.
Great season, & it's a no-brainer to do a second season.
The difference between it & Foundation is stark, & I wouldn't touch the team behind the latter with a 20ft barge pole, on any of their subsequent ideas.
