I'm glad Williamson's finally putting on a display, he's such a good play. Really enjoying watching this. Wonder if it'll inspire Steve Smith?

Bad weekend for NZ sport. Outplayed in both the rugby and the cricket. Is it too early to drink myself into despair?

Shit tournament, toss decided so much, terrible wickets and terrible atmosphere throughout.
Now to get spanked in the Ashes and deal with the usual nonsense that comes with it.

T20 works best on a shirtfront. You shouldn’t have to nudge around like was so often the case in this tournament

Well, that was the worst outcome. The biggest negative of this comp has been the influence of the toss. Basically, lose the toss = lose the game.

The result sucked but was not unexpected. I loved seeing Williamson flay Starc as if he was a local league bowler.

For T20, that is preferable to "day 4 of a Test" pitches, yeah.

So team batting 2nd will always have advantage?

Not particularly. Flatter pitches make it easier for the team batting first to trust their shots. Knowing what you need to chase is always going to be an advantage, that's inherent in the sport, but beyond that the conditions should only have minimal impact.
Seems weird that you're worried about teams batting 2nd having an advantage, after the tournament we just watched...

No not at all. I think a pitch that give something to the bowler will even it up batting first or second. Like in the 1st day of Test cricket.

Fine. You're the one who stated the alternative as being flat pitches. I say lean towards flat pitches - in other words, make sure the bats can trust the surface and get value from their shots. This is a format where batsmen are expected to take risks on a regular basis. It's NOT Test cricket and it shouldn't try to be. A flat pitch in Tests is massively skewed towards batsmen, but the same is nowhere near as true in T20, because in Tests you can just milk risk-free runs all day.

As stated earlier in the thread, I didn't have an issue over low scores. However, the almost insurmountable advantage of batting second really ruined the comp as it progressed in this case. So hear what you are saying but "even it up" is the opposite of what transpired.

Commiserations Kiwis. If you're going to lose a final thats the way to do it I guess. No last ball heartbreak or umpiring controversy. A shit sporting weekend for you.
But you're still the best Test cricket team in the world and the second best rugby team in the world so its not all doom and gloom.
