Hal Jordan wrote: Fri Apr 19, 2024 11:06 am Just like the benefits system. It will be lovely fat contracts for the chums with zero accountability, suicides and lives wrecked when people are mangled through the bureaucracy which starts with the premise "You are a fucking liar, prove that you are ill/cannot work, you idle workshy scum" and is administered by poorly trained, unmotivated people (or motivated by the wrong targets).

And Rachel Reeves will gleefully continue it under Labour, she is cut from the same cloth.
They have about 8 months left of government, it won't ever be realized. It's just "vice signalling".

GPs shouldn't be responsible for mental health signing off work I don't think. I think the Tories have a point if you had trained mental health professionals and job coaches you'd have a better system. But as said, they'll sell the contract to a donor and it'll become the computer says no job centre system we have.

While there isn't anything inherently wrong with reviewing individual cases in order to provide genuine help back to work I have the feeling that the intent is more the usual massively unsubtle attempt to find blame any others than themselves for the nation's problems. If it is ever put into effect it will be performed with all the sensitivity of an unleashed starving Rottweiler.

I am quite a big ‘back to the office’ person, but there is no way it can be sold as helping you lose weight. From my experience, quite the opposite!

He might have a bit of the ol' skinny-fat going on. Mostly skinny all over but got some extra accruing around the belly and hips for a little muffin top.

A commute reducing free time that could be used for exercise and having to adjust to portable lunches or buying on the go rather than using one's own kitchen doesn't strike me as conducive to getting more in shape.

Ive lost a couple of stone and put on a bit of muscle definition since I became economically inactive - I retired at 63. Having more time to play golf and go to the gym instead of sitting on my lardy arse in the office and eating crap food on the go has been a great help to my fitness and well being. I would recommend it. Happy to be interviewed by the press ... apart from the Mail, or the Express, or GBNews, or the Telegraph.

From the Torygraph itself, which may indicate a Pre-Election wheeze.
Thames Water plans £2bn shareholder payouts despite threat of collapse

Troubled supplier plans to hand dividend to parent company to cover debt costs

Thames Water is planning to pay out £2bn in dividends over the next decade despite growing fears over the company’s collapse, The Telegraph can reveal.

In a revised business plan submitted to regulator Ofwat, bosses of the troubled supplier said they intended to keep rewarding shareholders even as financial pressures push it closer to bankruptcy.

According to figures buried in a spreadsheet containing more than 100 tables, Thames Water plans to pay around £2bn in dividends between now and 2035 - consisting of payouts of up to £290m a year.

A lot is made (truthfully) of Harry Cole et al being client journalists of the Tories. As we’re on the cusp of a change of government it is worth remembering that their Labour counterparts exist too. Goodall being one of them

Goodall, James O' Brien, etc.

The interesting point will be how they behave when Labour are in power and don't really achieve anything. How they spin that.

Especially O'Brien. Constantly furious, without ever advancing any solutions.

Pretty much.

I imagine it will be ‘too big a mess left behind’ to explain away the issues (which of course is par for the course given the Tories still trot out the ‘there is no money’ letter, it will just be amusing because these people think they’re a cut above this)

Let's be fair, it very much is a monumental mess, and the tories have back loaded finances so it'll get worse in the next few years.

I sincerely hope they do continue to hold the government to account and if the incoming Labour cabinet try to implement a lunatic policy like Brexit then the likes of O'Brien don't let it go, if Labour continually enrich friends at the taxpayer's expense then I expect and hope they make as much noise as possible. If there is corruption then I hope it will be exposed, if there is playing to the extreme of their base then I hope that is called out - but what would be the "Lefty" equivalent of the Rwanda bill and fighting the poor instead of poverty look like? Re-nationalising the railways and water? Re-opening post office branches, huge increase in funding for the NHS, re-introducing checks and balances on the markets and separation of the casino from domestic banking?
Or are we talking little red books and five year plans?

A lot of the complaints O'brien has boils down to outright corruption and absence of any competence which dont really require complex solutions. The difficult one for O'brien and Labour is brexit and I expect he will still be anti brexit. I do think there are some simple things for business that Labour can do to ease trade without upsetting anyone bar the full on brexit loonies as the Tories really have tied themselves up in knots by trying to appease.

Ageing population and a lot of the cuts have come elsewhere but leading to greater nhs healthcare demand with issues that would have been cheaper to solve earlier (being reactive rather than proactive). Cumulative costs of poor population health and slow treatment.

Don’t worry this isn’t a ‘muslamic ray guns 15 minute city’ post.

What I mean is that they’ll do very little, posture a lot and funnel money to centre-left quangos. Will it be better than this? Sure I’d say so. But they’ll fail to achieve anything meaningful or even try and grasp half the issues.

If you know a way to make an alcoholic quit, I'm sure you'll find an eager & attentive audience ??

You can't force someone who believed in the Brexit bullshit to wipe the scales from their eyes & acknowledge they were duped; they have to work it out in their own. The problem is that it's bloody difficult to get anyone to admit a mistake, & the bigger the mistake, the harder it gets !

How does Labour, delicately, point out that voters were gullible fools when they voted for Brexit, & that they now urgently need to internalize that, & recognize the mistake, & start to reverse it ASAP ?

.
.
.

There's no simple way to reverse such an immense fuckup, you just have to wait for people to work it out for themselves, or for them to die off, & the demographic to shift.

Exactly this.

And in London that's about fine as it's a city full of young, rentes/bomaders, huge poverty/working classes despite the tropes, who rely on public transport, and hate what the Tories have become.

It's not fine in the rest of the country. Starmer/Khan's total vacuum of policy leads us straight to Prime Minister Farage or Badenoch.
