"It's clear that the developers have made a significant attempt to modernise the setting. The character customisation options are thorough for all ethnic backgrounds, there is global representation in the non-playable-characters, as well as gay and trans representation."

Gaming is serious stuff.

A boycott is hard to pull off when you can't clearly explain why someone is EVIL.

I mainly use reddit to keep abreast of music stuff and to look at cool nature pictures, but every now and then I'll browse all and it seems like each time I've done that recently some anti-gaming reddit has constantly been in the feed patting themselves on the back about boycotting this game. Without really having a dog in this, it's quite funny to see them be so self-congratulatory over something so pointless given the success of the game.

It goes to show that the vast majority of people don't give a fuck about all this. Harry Potter fans want their Harry Potter game, Rowling's supposed TERFiness just doesn't matter to anyone except a small percentage of the terminally online.

Where am I? At my home in Coalfalls.

And for free, you have two pronouns of mine. Oops, make that three.

Slick wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 9:04 pm Interesting one today. When I was picking the kids up from school there was a couple of middle aged ladies handing out leaflets by the gates. The leaflets were inviting people to a meeting to discuss trans information given at schools and discuss if it was appropriate. The leaflet said that they appreciate it is a sensitive subject and asked people to allow a discussion and use respectful language.

Anyway, just had a message from the school in a WhatsApp message apologising for the “politically motivated leaflets that are hateful towards a segment of the population” and telling any families affected to contact the school for support. The WhatsApp group has gone off with people screaming transphobia and hate crimes.

I thought the leaflet was actually pretty respectful but I did tell the ladies they shouldn’t be handing them out by the school gates. It’s all a bit over the top
The leaflets may have been but often the hard line groups get people along to debates through ethe promise of respectful dialogue and then turn the full screaming terf up later.

Swim England have an interesting approach:
Swim England has announced a new transgender policy with “open” and “female” categories for all its licensed events after arguing that “fair competition” must be the backbone of its approach. From September, athletes with a birth sex of male, or who are transgender or non-binary, must compete in the new “open” category for all Swim England’s licensed events. Athletes with a birth sex of female have their own protected category
You'd think that the open category will end up being almost exclusively transgender.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but have they not just changed the men's category to open? In which case that category would be almost exclusively men with the odd trans person (most likely a trans woman) who is insufficiently far along in their transition for hormone therapy to have significantly impacted them or whose natural gifts for swimming were prodigious pre-transition.

I think I may have read it wrong....

I had it in my head that 'open' was a third category, but it appears not.

I think I have a 3rd concern with the Trans movement

1. Use of girls toilets
2. Competing in women’s events
3. Medical drugs and procedures on children

I don't think trans women are women or trans men are men. I think that the 'trans women are women' etc is a lazy statement. I believe trans people deserve rights to prosper in communities - but to ignore their 'special circumstances' is foolish.

It is the noisy 10% that are destroying any real chance at discourse regarding these issues - and that is on both sides.

I believe it is imperative that we discuss trans rights and how they fit into our society - but it is impossible to discuss them without backlash. Impossible. Anyone not affording the trans community instant equal rights according to the trans communities expectations is immediately a TERF or transphobe. Many outspoken 'womens rights' campaigners seem to link heavily with far right organisations or religious movements.

There needs to be much more education on the differences of sex and gender and a ton more funding for mental health organisations.

I am completely opposed to trans participation in women's strength, power, contact and endurance sports.

I suspect it's pretty accurate and is a perfect example of this madness. There is something deeply ironical that women's' rights are actually being dangerously reversed in circumstances like this because they are no longer as fashionably edgy by those so desperate to be seen as right on.
Ah well, sixty years ago it was right-on to be against racism, forty years ago against homophobia and twenty years ago for feminism. Quite right but generally much lower profile now. I’m guessing the gender issue will fade away as another cause comes along. Which is a shame for those that are born in the wrong body.

I hate how much we get infected by extreme left-right US politics. It’s really polarising. To state the bleeding obvious, we should all nuanced views on topics rather than how they seem to clump their views together, and anyone not agreeing with them is called bigot, nazi, marxist.

Ban mRNA vaccinations
Anti Zelenskyy

Hate immigrants
Pro Trump MAGA

Left wing
Forced vaccine for everyone
Pro Ukraine
Drag shows for children
Hate own ethnicity
Trump should be convicted to stop him from running

I don’t know whether to hope this is fake or not?! Pretty horrific stuff.

Either some horrific things parents are exposing their children too, or some pretty sick fake propaganda

No way of knowing since it doesn't have any contextualising text or link to some kind of source. Photo editing is super easy.

I will say that scrolling through her feed reveals that she's quite upset about Trump being arrested and has a fixation on children being allowed to cut their genitals off in the name of transness (which is a load of nonsense). Seems like the sort of person whose words I'd question even if they told me the sky was blue.

To be honest this ranks lower down the the scale of offensiveness for me than those child beauty pageants they have in the US.

Well, that’s definitely wrong, and in fact exactly the opposite of reality. Your wrongometer needs serious re calibrating.

I think there’s quite a difference between children being badly dressed up as dolls vs adults exposing their near naked genitalia at children and having bills stuffed in their knickers by the said children.

You ever read/listened to any of Cathy Stock’s stuff on the definition of Woman? She’s the professor that was hounded out at Sussex University by the trans lobby.

She actually has an interesting solution to the whole “what is a woman?” Question.

She states that there are biological women, and that is the factual position. However, she then suggests that trans people could occupy a position of a woman as a matter of legal fiction.

She gives the example of companies being seen as a body corporate ie they’re a fictional person for the purposes of some law. For example in health and safety law, a company is treated in the law courts as an individual and so can be prosecuted as if they were a fictional individual, even though they’re factually not.

Another, more emotive example is that of adoptive parents. Once the adoption is confirmed, the people adopting occupy a position of ‘parent’ even though, in fact, they aren’t. It’s just that the law can create this legal fiction.

It is a clever solution, as it gives some recognition of the legal position, without changing biological fact, and everyone accepts that legal fictions have limitations, eg a company is a body corporate, but it can’t apply for a passport.
